Great tips, mate. I am actually moving to California, and I'll get to fish in the ocean for first time. It's great to know that you can catch them on artificial lures since that's all I use for freshwater fishing. I always wondered whether if lures would work from the beach, so it's great to know that they do.

Adding a sinker can impede a lure's designed swimming action. I suggest using a rod specifically rated for the weight of the lure you want to cast and if the beach-style casting rods you can find are still too heavy to cast your desired lure, try using something like a light 7' spin rod designed to cast the lure weights you are using. This option will often cast a lightweight lure further than a dedicated beach rod. Good fishing!

From memory the largest recorded weight in Australia is around 32lb (14.5kg), but that was a long time ago and a LOT bigger than the normal tailor size, which would average around 2lb to 4lb (approx. 1kg - 2kg).

Yep, we do, although our local name is 'tailor'. Interestingly, this fish is caught in waters on both the east and west coasts of Australia, parts of the southern and western coasts of Africa, along the Atlantic coast of the USA, the Gulf of Mexico, and even in some parts of the Mediterranean. That's one well-travelled fish!

Hi Max, I'll be happy to make a recommendation but first I need you to answer a few questions: what fish do you plan to catch and in what part of Australia do you plan to do your rock lure fishing?

I'm not familiar with Adelaide but here are some tips from Shane at Fishing SA magazine (his mag is a good source of fishing ideas for your area): "The closest surf beaches to Adelaide would be heading south... a drive to Port Noarlunga... Southport Beach. You can get salmon, jewies and sharks. Local tackle shops at Christies Beach will help you out. Other beaches such as Maslins can also produce jewies. Alternatively Goolwa and Victor Harbor are about an hour away, for sharks and jewies."

haha, in NJ the locals call them tailor blues. small world. :) You guys ever get them over 15lbs? In NJ we would get some big ones, but when I moved to Florida, the largest I caught was maybe 2lbs.

I know very little about surf fishing, but I have been researching it for hours now so I thought Id chime in. Ive read that a "carolina rig" might help you. I encourage you to look it up and dont take my word for it. Like I said, Im a total noob at surf fishing.

is he using any sinkers with his setup?
@jarviswalkerfishing10 жыл бұрын
No, there are no sinkers used with a beach lure fishing set-up; the lures themselves are weighted. Good fishing.

Jarvis Walker Fishing What weight lures are recommended for beaches?
@jarviswalkerfishing9 жыл бұрын
It's best too use the lightest weight possible in the prevailing conditions. That said, it's typically a choice determined by your rod's abilities and how far you need to cast with it. If your rod doesn't have a casting weight range listed on it, try starting with a 1/4oz or 1/2oz jighead for soft plastic lures. The same weights can be used for a buck tail-style jig. Or, if you are fishing metal casting slug type lures on beaches, it's then best to match the size of the lure to the natural prey on which the fish are feeding; in this scenario it's typically the smaller lures that attract the most strikes. 10g, 20g and 30g metal slugs are popular for tailor and Australian salmon. I hope that information helps.
