In this episode, we rip into some late arvo tailor and salmon, showing off the rig, bait, and types of gutters I like along the way. I switch tactics after sunset and chase a jewfish/mulloway over the high tide and get rewarded with a nice 10-12kg fish, showing off the rig and how I like to present baits afterwards. But the night is not done yet - the next bait is quickly munched and a fight of over an hour lands me a monster of the beach.
Angling Untangled is a fishing adventure and tutorial channel showing off some of the beautiful fishing locations and fish species found in the saltwater and freshwater environments of New South Wales, Australia.
Expect in-depth guides into gear selection, rigs & lures, tactics, locations, filleting, gear maintenance, and more, covering both bait and lure fishing as well as land based and kayak/boating adventures.
With a whole host of inshore and estuarine species available, targets will include dusky flathead, yellowfin bream, Australian bass, trout, yellowfin whiting, tailor, Australian salmon, mulloway/jewfish, luderick, drummer, squid, kingfish, sharks and more.

I like to snell both of my hooks and use the first link below for the bottom hook and the method in the second link for the top hook. Matt, the bloke in the video, doesn’t do it the smartest way though, and it’s much easier to snell your bottom hook first, snip off a good length of leader, slide the top hook down the line and snell and that way the length between the hooks is much more controllable

I've been standing out on the beach, rain, hail, obnoxious wind and shine for the last 6 months, trying to land one of these fish. I got lucky catching a small one in about the middle of November, but haven't seen one off the beach since, even though I'm still hearing about people catching them in my area. I'm trying to be very conscious of the conditions (swell, winds, water clarity etc), and I fish every single afternoon if there is a high tide between when I finish work and midnight lol. If the high tide is any later over the weekends, I'll fish those as well. I’ve been doing this in hopes of trying to catch something so I could identify some kind of pattern, but no pattern emerges if you don’t catch fish lol. I've tried all sorts of bait, livies, squid, beach worms etc, but to no avail. I'm at a huge loss as to what I'm doing wrong, and I'm not sure if it's something as simple as gutter selection? If I forget about chasing jewie's, and go for bream, whiting etc I seem to catch fish, so I feel like I know what to look for as to where fish could be, however, not catching jewies has me seriously doubting my abilities to read the water. I’d be super open to any kind of advice you may have, as I just don’t know where to turn here hehehe

Well usually that first one is the hardest and they start coming a bit easier after but sounds like you’ve been doing the right things and putting in the hours without getting the odd blessing. Hard to say what you could try different without seeing where and how you’re going about it. Taking the conditions out of the equation, the thing I think is just as important as bait selection (which sounds like you’re using as good as anyone else) is making sure it’s presented as good as it can be. That’s making sure that it’s streamlined and not out there spinning in the current. For strip baits I haven’t changed my technique much compared to how I go about it in this video. For live baits, which is my preferred way to target them these days, I bridle rig them on a single circle hook. For all baits I use a rig similar to the one in my longcast salmon video, but you don’t need to use a sinker release clip to usually get an adequate casting distance. More than happy to keep helping out how I can here in the comments, but just thought I’d mention that I’ve also started a beach fishing charter business here on the far south coast NSW - Sapphire Beach Fishing Charters

Thanks very much mate, the stars just haven’t aligned for getting another episode done lately but hopefully get back in the rhythm once newy is out of lockdown. I’m generally looking for most of the same things I am during the day, but it’s a bit trickier at night because you can’t judge the depth of the gutter by the colour of the water. But even on dark moons you can usually make out where waves are breaking on a sandbar out the back and then reforming through the gutter to break again near the shore, and the more you look at gutters during daylight you’ll notice how the waves react and can spot a gutter even if the white water rolls all the way through. Can also check out how the gutters look on the low tide during the day and plan from there and you might have access to surf cams which will save you a drive. Otherwise just watch the gutters around you while the tide drops and see what’s promising, you might even just need to move 20m up the gutter your in 👍🏼

Awesome vid mate! how do you find the tangles with the sliding sinker clip? does the bead help to avoid the tangles? I seem to get a lot of tangles when i use them. I love the convenience because you can take the sinker off but the tangles suck!!
@anglinguntangled
@anglinguntangled 2 жыл бұрын
It can happen but should be a rarity. I’ve found tangles are most likely to occur when the sinker doesn’t set properly and is constantly rolling around on the bottom, so using bigger sinkers might help out. I still use this rig because of its simplicity but I’ve use the rig shown off in my long cast pilchard rig a lot more, even for slab baits

Awesome info and clip mate certainly gets ya pumped up and ready to hit the beach. Quick question, my setup is a samaki 12'0" spin line 20lb-40lb pair with 12000d baitrunner that should do the trick yeah or is it too heavy?
@anglinguntangled
@anglinguntangled Жыл бұрын
Cheers mate! Pretty sure I’ve got the same rod and it’s a fine mulloway rod, will be able to handle any you throw at it. It will be a bit overkill on most tailor and salmon but you’d probably rather be ready for a mulloway than wish you had been. Reel sizes are a bit different across the brands and I haven’t used the shimano bait runners before, but I’d say 12000 is gonna be on the slightly large size but not much of an issue especially if your going to be using a rod holder 👍🏼

Just found your channel,awesome videos.i run the same style running sinker sometimes and when the surfs abit rough it always seems to end up in a tangled mess? Should I ditch the braid to fluro?
@anglinguntangled
@anglinguntangled Жыл бұрын
Cheers mate! I tried running braid straight to the swivel once and that resulted in tangles if that’s what you mean at the end there. I always make sure to have atleast 2m of fluro joined to my braid and that tends to keep this rig relatively tangle free. If that length is too short the sinker can sometimes travel up onto the braid during casting or while being washed around. The other reasons for tangles are by using a sinker size that isn’t holding the bottom - if a star sinker is constantly rolling along it’s bound to get tangled. Lastly if the bait is spinning too much in the current it will twist up the line and then tangle up when it gets washed back over the line. Easy to tell if that’s the case as the leader will be all twisted up and might need cutting off

Hey mate, great content. I've heard that winter is prime for salmon and tailor (thought summer was good as I would wake up early and also go late arvo off the rocks and catch heaps on metal lures).. so I started going to the beach and fishing the gutters but no luck, guy down a few gutters had pilchards and got loads. Are the pelagics more active at the beach?? Thanks!
@anglinguntangled
@anglinguntangled 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah they can be caught year round but good numbers and good fish definitely boost during the winter months, and the beach would personally be my most productive place to catch both of them. While you can luck out off the rocks and come across a school of them, the beach gutters really concentrate their numbers and feels like where they are always in feeding mode. But it’s all about picking the right gutter and moving to a different one if your not having any luck. Using those metal lures off the beach around dawn and dusk can also be very productive and makes it easy to travel light and track down where they are 👍🏼
@georgemichael5582

@@anglinguntangled so you'd go braid for better casting with a leader right? I've been using 15lb mono and casting 80g metals.. would you go smaller off the beach or would they still be eager to hit anything if they are there. (Haha sorry if you find me asking a few questions on your vids mate, want to learn more and more to improve!)
@anglinguntangled
@anglinguntangled 3 жыл бұрын
Nah mate, absolutely happy to help out I’m glad your asking. There’s pros and cons to both braid and mono off the beach, but I think braid comes out on top in most regards. If your going to be casting any lures at all braid trumps mono hands down. As well as I prefer braid for most of my bait fishing as well because it casts further, is less affected by current and waves and therefore you don’t need to use heavier sinkers, is more sensitive to feel bites, and I think is much better if you’re gonna have your rod in a holder as the lack of stretch means fish are more likely to hook themselves when biting. I think the stretch in mono helps keep fish on the line better, but good angling and a proper drag setting minimises this, and slide baiting is only possible on mono which is a really interesting technique which I hopefully cover before too long. As for the lure size, 80 is gonna be right in the sweet spot for tailor and salmon and you’ll belt it out miles with braid, but they’ll also take much lighter ones too and might be dialled in to a smaller size at the time. I usually throw 40-60g and sometimes 20-30 on a lighter setup for a bit if sport 👍🏼
@anglinguntangled
@anglinguntangled 3 жыл бұрын
I’d learn the FG knot if you go to braid and having that knot bellow the second runner from the reel is going to minimise line wrapping around the tip when casting

@anglinguntangled

Cheers mate! I rate them both very highly. I have one of the old generation prevails in 8-12kg and can do this style with it, but my heavier samaki loads up better when casting and but more sensitive. I think the new prevail is 8-15kg and would be sweet. And slammers are just the bees knees for this kind of stuff. Well sealed and strong drag 👌

Fresh is best so if you can catch you’re own you’re sorted. Some tackle shops stock fresh as well otherwise it’s worth having a look at the local co op, but will be pricey. Out of the frozen stuff I rate the lunds squid the best but they’ve stopped importing them in the 1lb boxes so you’re looking at about $50 for a 5lb box. @anglinguntangled
@anglinguntangled 2 жыл бұрын
I always have a wind on fluorocarbon leader when using braid, about 3m on my beach rods so that the joiner knot is between the reel and first runner when casting. That’s because I go from bait to lures and back a fair bit but mono would work fine as a wind on. I guess you could go braid all the way down to the swivel but your going to want to make sure your sinker clip isn’t fraying the line and your knot is protected 🤙🏼

Yeah just off a local beach and you’re right, it’s the first eagle ray I’ve got around here. No I would’ve got the bite and set the hooks within 5 or so seconds before the footage starts. I don’t let them run at all with slab baits. Using live baits in still water (in the harbour) I don’t mind letting them run a bit but off the beach I think that the heavy fixed sinkers and currents pulling on the line will make the drop the bait

@@anglinguntangled thanks for the info, I can’t seem to catch a break. The other night I missed the bite on the live bait because the star sinker got stuck in the fg knot and then got smoked on the rod with fresh squid. I was feeling big head shakes until the line randomly broke.
@anglinguntangled
@anglinguntangled 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah just bad luck bro and I’ve had a similar experience of my leader breaking randomly half way to my joiner knot on a good fish. They are such rare chances with jewies that I always make sure that my line, knots, and hooks are all top notch, replacing any of these if I think they’re not perfect. I’m not very experienced with live baiting from the beach, but using circle hooks and drag slightly less than when fighting the fish might help with hookups. Also, if your using offset hooks make sure that the hook point beds away from your live bait when it’s swallowed will help hook up rate. Hard to explain I’ll see if I can find a link for you
