Hi. I just started doing kumihimo braiding. It's a lot of fun. I use sinkers that fisherman use. They come in many weight sizes. I just tie the sinkers to a binder clip. I love doing beading. I do loom beading and hand beading using the square stitch. Love your videos. Keep up the excellent videos. I look forward to your up coming videos. God Bless. .

HI! Very good tutorial,and if you allow me i would have also few tips. For those who do not have those bobins (like me) you can try stopper beads and it is easier if you set the threads first and then you add the beads. I made a bracelet like this one using Fringe beads by myiuki and toho 8/0. Thanks for all your tutorials,they are awesome.

Thank you so much for this very clear tutorial. After trying your bottom-left to top-left and top-right to bottom-right method, I found that very unnatural, and so I am doing bottom-right to top-right and top-left to bottom-left instead. Since your instructions were so clear it was very easy for me to switch to a way that felt more natural.

You can find a full ingredient list for the Spiraling Beaded Kumihimo Bracelet - Project B634 when you click the link for it in the video description underneath this video. If you wanted to use different types of beads, you would just follow the same procedure. You can try to tie your ends onto a large closed jump rings but I am afraid that you will have too many cords to tie and it will be bulky. Glue is really the best way to attach ends and clasps, however definitely feel free to experiment.

You can definitely use waxed linen cord, just make sure that your beads will fit over it. As for the bobbins, the ones I used in the video are the smaller size 1 7/8". There's a link for them in the video description underneath the video. You can use whatever size bobbins you like though. You need the bigger bobbins when you have larger beads or longer strands.

There are lots of free online kumihimo pattern generators that you can use to plan out your design, I would suggest using one of these for your bead placement. As for the disks, the small and round ones don't produce a different result, it is mainly just preference of size. I find that the larger one is easier to hold so I prefer it.

There are many different ways to create jewelry and each designer will find the way that works best for them. Personally, I always use a weight because it keeps the tension on the threads completely even, whereas I find that it can vary a bit if I just use my fingers (resulting in a braid that has thicker and thinner areas to it). The key is to experiment and see what works best for you.

Hi! I just tested out this technique using S-Lon cord and size 6/0 seed beads. It works great! It is a little bulkier but not much so. I would stick with the S-Lon cord for doing this technique.
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 11 жыл бұрын
It is a little hard to say because everyone braids at a different rate. I would estimate that a standard 8 warp non-beaded Kumihimo braid that is 6 inches long for a bracelet takes between 30 minutes to an hour. It also depends upon what material you are using, something like S-lon tends to take longer then a 2mm cord. For beaded kumihimo, I would double your time estimate. Also, just remember that the more you do this, the faster you will get.
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 11 жыл бұрын
Great question! I have never tried to work Kumihimo clockwise but logically it makes sense that you could. I think you would just need to reverse your cord paths and go basically backwards. I suggest giving it a try and seeing what happens. Please let me know your results, I would be very curious to find out!

If you use enough E6000 glue, the clasp will hold. You can also try tying another thread around your braid instead of tape and then gluing that in place.

Hi! To achieve a similar a result you will need to do a little experimenting. Have you done round crochet with 8 threads before vs. 6? If so, i would suggest using the same size beads that you used for an 8 thread round crochet for the kumihimo since it uses 8 threads. If you wanted to have a slightly thicker bracelet, you could still use the size 8 beads and #12 Perle Cotton and just use 8 threads instead of 6. The result will be very close.

Both glues should work fine. I prefer E6000 because it is a bulkier glue then GS, and for this application, I find that easier. Also, E6000 is so good at adhering to metal and I feel a bit more secure using it to attach my cord end caps.

It would be difficult to weave this around a ring. I think an easier option would be to add a piece of wire to the center of the braid after you complete it and then bend the now wired kumihimo into a circular shape. You will need to deal with finishing your ends somehow, I am not quite sure how you would do this. I suggest some experimentation, it is fun to play!

Size 11/0 seed beads work if you are using a thin enough cord such as Griffin Silk. With the project in the video, I would not recommend using 11/0 seed beads though.

Thank you so much for this free lesson, and everything you beadaholique's share in such depth, and you're all as good as being in a class. I just did my first Kumihimo braid to get the feel for it, and now I must do the beaded one. I hope the kit is still available. My brain is running wild with variations. I can't think of the name of the teardrop shaped seed beads, but I think they'd look awesome. Also; I have some embroidery DMC #5 thread on hand along with a smorgasbord of beads, and I'm impatient to wait for the kit, do you think that thread is too thin? Or will it unravel- as it's fine braided thread? I'm loving the spiral clasp, so perfectly blended with the art of Kumihimo.
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 10 жыл бұрын
Hi! I am so glad that you are enjoying kumihimo! Yes, the DMC thread should work fine, just be prepared for it to be a thinner braid then you are used to but strength wise it should be totally okay. Have fun!

Unfortunately I have not worked with C-Lon so I can not say if it will work or not. You can kumihimo with a wide range of threads and cords. I would not recommend using anything larger then 3mm and I would also not recommend using anything so small (like regular sewing thread) that you will not be able to see your braid. S-Lon works great, so does Griffin Silk, Soutache Cord, Satin Rattail, and just about any other cord along those lines.

You can use whatever color cord you want. I like to pick a color of cord that will blend into the background so that the focus is on the beads, but it is entirely a matter of personal preference. Sometimes it can look really fun to have a bright or contrasting cord showing through the beads.

Hello Julie, thanks so much for your design, it is awesome. I have a few questions: I bought another clasp, I didn't find this one in Germany, it also has 3-3,5mm inner diameter. I bulked up the braid at the end, and glued it in, but it doesn't hold, the bulk is glued in, but one pull, and it comes off of the braid. Also, I didn't find E6000 but E6000 plus, do you think it is the same? Whenn dried, it is a little like rubber. Perhaps this is the problem? By the way, I tried the design with some other seed beads, well, it looks a lot different, if the beads are not the same size... TOHO beads are the best, but hard to come by in Germany, luckily I found a store :)
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 3 жыл бұрын
It could be that E6000 plus is the issue, we can't worked with it much. You may also need a bit more glue to hold it in place. Try applying more next time, and waiting a day. It should take about 24 hours for the glue to take its maximum hold. You also may be experiencing some climate issues. If it’s too cold where you are working the glue will seize up too quickly and won't bond to the thread.

My question is what happens or how do you handle it when you have about 4 inches of perfect beaded braid and then something emergency happens you get lost and then you get off track ...messing up in a place that far along is there any trick for trying to find your way back on track or making a mistracking start to work? Twice I have had to drop all those hundreds perhaps thousands of beads off and start all over it's almost a tragedy lol. I'd like to note you are an awesome instructor, I understand you clearly, and did my first beaded without a hitch...

Thanks for the compliment and I am glad the videos are easy to follow! Losing your place does happen and it can be tricky to find your way back. Leaving the cords all on the board and in their slots, I try to work backwards, undoing however much I need to, one warp at a time. It's not easy, but it is possible. The key is to not remove everything from the disk and then try to put it back. I will try and do a video showing how to do this in the coming weeks. Happy Holidays!

This video is a bit on the older side, and it's very possible that it shows a product sold in a format that we no longer carry. We currently carry rattail only in 6 yard lengths. www.beadaholique.com/c-60479-satin-cord.aspx?KZfaq&

Wondering why you couldn't wrap the extra length of the thread or cord onto the spools before knotting the end?

how long exactly does it take to make one of these? just curious. i recently started selling jewelry online and at a local art store in my hometown and I hate to mark prices up because the pieces take a long time. however, i absolutely love how kumihimos look! they are beautiful and you can do so much with them. so, on average how long does it take to make a bracelet or a necklace (just beaded kumihimo, not the extras you might add).

what other kinds of cording or thread can you use? also in some other tutorials i've see them take the right thread and bring it down and take the bottom most left string and bring it up. is it essentially the same kind of thing
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 9 жыл бұрын
tbkk100 You can use any cord or thread that fits within the notches on the kumihimo disk and that when combined with the other cords will fit through the center hole. I have used ribbon, Griffin Silk, Super-Lon, satin rattail, pearl cotton, and even chain. Just be cautious of any cord that has a lot of stretch to it, this could alter your resulting braid. Beadaholique How would you make a kumihimo bracelet or necklace using wire instead of cording and what kind of wire would you use
@beadaholique
@beadaholique 9 жыл бұрын
tbkk100 It is possible to use wire and you would do everything the same as if the wire was cord. There would be no change to the instructions. However, just a word of caution, it is far more difficult to use wire for kumihimo because of how it kinks and becomes easily work hardened. I would recommend dead soft wire. You might also want to try beading wire such as Soft Flex. Beading Wire www.beadaholique.com/c-60380-beading-wire.aspx?KZfaq&

Great instructional video. However, in making my first beaded Kumihimo project, after several without-ending up with way too much wasted thread at the end of each project I went on the "scant" side without considering the amount of extra space between beads would practically double my thread used. Only an inch into it and I KNOW it's going to be too short (frustrating after cutting the threads, loading the beads onto them, etc). The second thing is to make sure you use GOOD quality beads that are regularly sized-my project) is already showing a lot of thread between the beads because of the irregular sizes (6.0ish-in tubes-very few the same size) not horrible for a first time attempt, takes a close look to notice. To make it easier to remember=left up, right down, turn, etc. it's that simple. I also want to mention that a great introductory kit would include the disk, instructions for different types of braids (instead of variations of the basic 8 strand spiral), how to create patterns, a fishing depth-finder for a weight, *12* bobbins, if you added in enough satin cording and end clasps for a bracelet, you could easily sell it for $30 or more.

Is it possible to add beads to a 16-strand or 12-strand kumihimo? I've been looking all over the internet but can't find a video anywhere, so please take some time to answer. Thanks in advance!

HI I am new to kumihimo and was wondering if you can only do a two colour spiral I don't seem to be able to find any designs like the ones for tubular bead crochet.

June Burt I would love to find a 3 or 4 color spiral but because of the way the warp threads are lined up, I only know of a 2 color spiral design for an 8 warp braid. There is a such thing as a 16 warp braid so I wonder if you could do more colors with that (I would think so). Let me research it some more and if I find a way, I will make a tutorial on it. Thanks for the question.
