Beagles are "sturdy" because of being bred for hunting. I thought mine was over weight when I was told by my vet that he was perfectly normal. They are naturally "pudgy" looking; however one of the more healthy breeds of all the dogs out there.

I'm 20 almost 21 and we've had beagles my whole life. If they are trained properly and taken care of well with more than plenty TLC, they will listen like no other!!! Our beagle now is about 5 1/2 and he will jump on your lap for attention, crawls right up next to you in bed and snuggles up to me, good rabbit hunting dog too!!! Will never ever own any other type of dog!
