In this video we talk about how much it costs to not only rebuild a brz/frs/86 But to also replace the engine entirely. If you have one of these cars you might find yourself needing to replace or repair a blown motor so this video is to help show you guys the true cost of doing each option. This was our personal experience, depending on what Message you choose and how you go about it results may vary. I hope this video helps Show what a realistic cost of rebuilding/replacing a SUBARU BRZ/ SCION FRS/ Toyota 86 motor.

There’s a third option Khan forgot to mention: One could chose to replace the engine with a “built” race engine. I shopped around to see what built FA20’s go for and they cost far less than most would expect? For anyone considering both A) Replacing an engine and B) Adding forced induction, the built engine begins looking very attractive. Aftermarket engines that are rebuilt by professionals can include hardware that ensures the engine can handle any additional power that forced induction provides. Forged pistons, forged rods, race bearings, upgraded timing, are just a few of the upgrades provided with this fully cleaned, machined and perhaps most importantly, fully assembled long block is ready for install. I’d assert that such an engine would far more durable than anything Subaru sells. These engines are available for less than $5K (assuming you have an adequate core block to trade-in). I’ve seen Stage 1 kits with all the parts I described above as low as $3800. I was astonished by how these Stage 1 engines are rated for output up to 625 BHP?! That is an insane amount of power from only 2.0L of displacement! I’d assume a ridiculous amount of boost would be required for that level of power, but imagine the peace of mind any owner would have in knowing they could double, even triple the power output of their BRZ/FRS without a moment’s concern for the engine. Lastly, this video demonstrates how one tiny error can destroy a brand new engine. There were no turbos or nitrous involved, just a missed torque requirement and BOOM, a perfectly good engine needs to be replaced. A pro-built engine like those I described above should appear very attractive to novice tuners as the engine is already assembled and timed, it simply needs to be installed into the car. The cost is only marginally more than a DIY for a considerably better engine.

This a Hail Mary to see if you’ll respond, but where did you find fully built long blocks? I straight up can’t find fully built engines for under 8k. Do you have any recommendations in regards to websites or where to look?

@@livingdegree1742 Oh man, I remember posting this but it seems like ages ago and a lot longer than a year? My comment was focused primarily towards the cost of a reinforced short block for FI and reusing the stock heads with some minor mods to help with FI. I’m not certain where the actual prices I calculated came from, but I think I saw prices for FA20 short blocks from Crawford and IAG Performance? Hell, even some Subaru dealer shops had listings for brand new short blocks for less than $3K? I’m not affiliated with any specific manufacturer and actually lean more towards Mazda for the previous MX-5 projects I’ve completed. I just did a few Googles and it would seem that just like everything else even engine parts, that haven’t changed one bit since this comment, have also gone up by around 15-20%? Both Crawford and IAG appeared are the top of the search, but their prices have definitely gone up since I commented. I was seriously considering a new Toyota GR86 during the spring of 2022, but then the GR Corolla was announced and I waited to see what Toyota had to offer. Toyota dealers are shameless and every single dealer that has them was charging insane markups, so I gave up and went back to searching for a wrecked Miata RF to rehabilitate. Sorry man, I know what it’s like to experience that FOMO when folks mention deals that you’re also searching for, but it was just a quick peek to see what was out there. I honestly couldn’t believe how dude blew up a brand new engine and was kinda like “Aw shucks” over the whole thing?! My best advice would be to search online and if you get close to commenting you’re looking for, just start calling shops/yards on the phone. I’ve snagged some *crazy deals* just by keeping in touch with pro tuners and yards who constantly have cars coming and going. A month or so after posting this comment I snagged a 2018 Mazda Miata RF Grand Touring that kissed a tree in the driver rear quarter for only $10500. The guy called me one day after talking to him on phone because he had my number right there. They totaled it because they (wrongly) assumed the folding roof was totaled, but it just needed a few parts that weren’t related to crash to be replaced. I sold that very same car last fall for $27300 and ended up netting nearly $12K for about 12 hours of work and some paint, which my nephew takes care of. Anyway, just some friendly advice as many of these shops are owned by folks my age (50+) and relate more to a 5 min phone conversation versus sending a bunch of links they’ll never look at. I don’t know why my generation is so tech-adverse, but you can take advantage of it and score some great deals. I’ve schooled my nephew to “chew the fat” with the guys at the yards we frequent and he’s driving a black Denali he found totaled out and traded paint services for. He’s can’t believe he’s got it so good! Good luck finding what you need. The hunt never ceases! 👍

Bro, so helpful. You're so clear and concise that I wish you actually had a video showing and walking through a rebuild of the FA engine (ya know, without the screwup 😂). I'm strongly leaning towards rebuilding mine with a buddy (same damn thing, rod knock), and it'll be our first stab at it, so we need all the help we can get 😅 Great video though, appreciate it

I won't go into my credentials but just trust me when I say buy an automatic brz and check the pickup tube then change your oil regularly. You will not have problems. You will have fun and decent mileage. Those engines are not temperamental. They are mistreated. They are very reliable.

What is the oil change process for a rebuilt engine? Subaru put a new engine in my car and told me to not rev over 5k and that’s it, I feel like I should change the oil out after the 1000 mi break in period. Any help would be appreciated thanks!!

i was planning to get me a brz but i keep hearing about people blowing up their engines, why does that happen. does this only happen if people use forced induction or that just a problem that the stock car has? Im scared to buy one now.

If you don't mod it and not abuse it by having the engine redline everytime and doing maintenance it won't probably blow up anytime soon.

The 2013 and maybe 14 models had a valve spring issue which ppl would get fixed at the dealer under warranty. Unfortunately the techs were given bad sealant or instructed to use too much, and it would break off and clog oil ports inside the motor under high load. My '13 brz bent a rod on the freeway in Jax around 130k miles The car was great with good milage other wise. HIGHLY recommend dropping the oil pan and replacing the oil pickup tube with a better model. Also checking for any clogged ports/extra sealant

Buy an automatic and yes they are just pull and reseal the oil pan so you can check to make sure the pickup tube is not clogged from the spring recall. Some people were bad at housekeeping during that operation.

Any advice for an 18/19 year old trying to get a BRZ/86/FRS as a first car? Currently saving for $15k to buy in cash. Insurance is a bitch too

Honestly speaking buying a brz that is in good condition body wise with a blown motor and just replacing the motor is not a bad option! you’ll learn a lot throughout the process of doing a motor swap, it’s honestly not too difficult. And you can get a good condition PRZ for a hell of a good deal!

@@Spextre RB swapping would be great it’s just gonna be VERY expensive so just a heads up there. I got a 2015 because it was available but if you get 2013 just make sure it had the recall done . If you want extra features go 2017+ but if you don’t really care for it because u can actually put the digital dash in the older models you could save money and get a 2013-2016 model

Just spend 5k on a build short block then slap the fa20 heads on it and take your time so you can actually make good power
