After 58 years, the very first revival of the musical "Funny Girl," about famed Ziegfeld Follies comedienne Fanny Brice, is opening on Broadway, starring "Booksmart" actress Beanie Feldstein. Correspondent Mo Rocca explores how Barbra Streisand's performance in the original stage production and 1968 movie made her a superstar; and talks with Feldstein about Brice's influence on generations of female comic actresses, and why she's been preparing to play Brice her entire life.
"CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

despite all this effort, and hope, and anticipation, and adulation, i do not see how this can possibly work. i think i am not alone in this skepticism, having seen Streisand doing it on stage, and the movie, and actually observing her entrance through the awaiting throngs, with then-husband Elliot Gould, at the movie premiere in September, 1968, at that now-demolished Criterion movie theatre, just off Times Square in NY, where i saw the movie for the first of several times, the next day, at the first matinee. God, that sentence was long, wasn't it. but i had to be there. i remember thinking how pale-white her skin looked, and the curly hairdo, and the pale pink gown she wore, and the movie-star-is-born vision she embodied on that special night. glad i made the effort. i loved her then.

"Funny Girl" received horrible reviews on opening night, including the NYTimes and NYPost and Variety all said the show needed a star who could sing. Even the sets got bombed. Too bad, but I also had a feeling this wouldn't work. Most of the critics said the show was miscast, starting with Beanie.

I did see Streisand in Funny Girl on Broadway when I was 15. I am almost as excited to see Beanie in the role. She has ‘It’, that hard to define quality that makes you want to watch, in awe, as a performer gives her all and draws you into her camp cheering for her all the way.

You get it! A lot of these negative boomers writing all of the rude comments here about Beanie are clueless. Beanie is a talented girl no question about it. However her reviews are anything but glowing. They were downright negative. One common theme was her belting is strong but her voice strains with higher notes. The fact she’s leaving the show after only three months doesn’t bode well. Funny Girl may have been a set back but it happens. She’ll go on to do many more great things.

I don't understand. The role is for an extremely talented singer. They wrote it around Barbra's prodigious vocal talent. There are other singers who have that kind of talent, quite a few of them on Broadway. But Beanie isn't one of them. It's no shade. It's nothing personal. The only way this show works is with a voice that can do big belts, jazz, and delicately spun ballads. I would not pay broadway prices for this performance.

Well, ok. But before Fanny Brice (born Fania Borach), there was the Jewish star Sophie Tucker, aka “The Last of the Red-Hot Mamas,” who appeared with the Ziegfeld show for a short time. Tucker - born Sofia Kalish - was also more zaftig (plump/curvy) and brassier than Brice. And alongside both, there was a thriving Yiddish theater in NYC and other cities, that was the launching ground for a number of Jewish stars who went on to vaudeville, Broadway, movies, and eventually even to TV. Brice is truly important, but she was neither the first nor the only Jewish-obvious star of her era.

I saw the show on the third day of previews, March 29. Sorry to say, I left at intermission. Lifeless. A road tour to shake this production down would have helped immeasurably. It seemed like community theater to me, not Broadway. "People" is a case point. Three choices: get someone to do a killer Streisand impression; get the director to work with the star to create something phenomenal, proprietary to the star, and different from Streisand so that there is no comparing going on; or cut the song. Choice that was made: settle for a faint impression of a great song on the level of community theater. A great disappointment. I saw others leave as well. I hope something changes before April 24.

Had the great and magnificent AMY WINEHOUSE lived a wonderful drug free life, surrounded by people who didn't exploit her and robbed her money, she would have made a sensation Funny Girl. La WINEHOUSE, was also a great belter, and had that devastating stage presence who could re-design the famous role with her unique sound. AMY had the ability to make you laugh and cry in 16 bars. Picture her singing "My Man". The killer score will be Barbra's forever because her luminous sounds can't be re-created, just ask Julie BUDD. B.F. will be a lively, lovely Fanny, whose best quality is to be herself.

@@TruthSerum101 The suffocating P.C. police will destroy many great scripts and songs from classic shows which will surely keep H.F. in high rewrite demand. The ONE song that everyone waits for, has hummed repeatedly while vacuuming, doing dishes, showering, and identifies with is taken out for fear of militant protests by people who know nothing about what great theater is like. Pity the coward producers and great collaborative minds who are feeding the BLOB crowd from the Steve McQueen horror classic. How many times has H.F. butchered the famous "MY MAN", song waiting for the knock, knock, on his door? Too many to count 😪. To make things even worse, they hired the PERFECT MAN, Karimloo, to play the leading man, denying a perfect moment for Beanie to shine to Brava shouts singing MY MAN. I'd love to give some "Truth Serum", to the artistic staff and ask them what they really think. I have May tickets.

@@MrQbenDanny LOL@Truth Serum. My Man was not cut by Harvey. It was never in the show to begin with, and it was not written by the show's composers. Thus, It wasn't in the London revival either. It's an old French song (Mon Homme) that became a hit in the U.S. for Fanny Brice in 1921. In the movie, it was used in the place of The Music That Makes Me Dance.

I saw this Harvey Fierstein reworked Funny Girl in London - and it was pretty forgettable. It almost feels like the Emperor's New Clothes here. People who've paid to see the show are convincing themselves that Feldstein is the new Streisand. There are way more talented people on Broadway who cold have played this role beautifully. A little too old now but Shoshana Bean comes to mind. Beanie Feldstein seems like a nice person but these clips look like AmDram in comparison to Streisand.

I saw the reworking in London a few years ago...a scaled down production emanating from the Menier Chocolate Factory that got pushed into the West End with high ticket prices, low production values and a shrill rickety "orchestra"..what a dissapointment that was...the curse of this show is Streisand : either you play Barbra doing a character called Fanny Brice that has almost nothing to do with the real person or you play the real Fanny who will always be a dissapointment..that stuff is totally unfunny today...either way it's an uphill battle....best production I saw was a dutch version years ago..they made one little adjustment : she wasn't jewish! 🤣

@@michaelsinclair9010 You have not seen the musical yet you denigrate this lovely young woman because she does not fit your ideal of who should play the lead. A critic is someone who has actually SEEN the performance. They are THEN able to make what they consider a fair and honest evaluation of the show and its cast. You cannot watch a video with a few clips and say she can't carry the show. So my advice to you is to see the play and then tell everyone what you think. Don't sit at home and watch videos and critique an entire show based on freaking KZfaq videos.
