This game is alive still because of Wiimmfi as well as these glitches keeping the time trial crowd around. I heard something like 500-1,000 people still concurrently play? Which is pretty nuts for being 16 years old this year

On the subject of the split screen character glitch, way back when (maybe like 8-10 years ago) my brother and I were playing, and somehow someway, while both trying to select dry bones first, we both landed on him on what seemed the same frame, and we knew that normally wasn't possible, and it was WILD, we were on battle mode and literally one of us was upside down in the kart; it was hilarious XD

Mario kart wii, as its meta is already defined and will probably never change, the core gameplay feels satisfying enough to keep a large amount of people playing online thru Wimmfii or CTGP constantly. It's "fun broken". It is still imo the best mario kart game.

0:40 except for rr no glitch! 0:54 the wheelies during chain drifts don’t make you go any faster, they just make the chain drift easier 2:20 MC3 does actually have a glitch category in tas due to superhopping, making 32/32 tracks with multiple categories

My idea is that faster bikes need inside drift in order to make sharper turns without bumping into a wall or going offroad. A slower kart or bike would be able to make it just fine with outside drift.

The reason why I never wanted Funky Kong in MK8D was because I was actually fearful of Funky Kong dominating another games meta, even when the game stopped getting updates. Thankfully Funky isn't as powerful in deluxe as he was in Wii, but tbh, I'm glad he doesn't get another Funky Kong Flame Runner 2.0 That would have honestly been the worst thing ever for me.

Thanks for bringing back suppressed memories of why I hated bikes in Mario Kart Wii. I think a big reason I haven't played any Mario Kart game released after this is because of the horrid memories of how stupidly fast they were. At least now I know they're actually broken.

honestly, MKDS is pretty jank, and some of the glitches are in a similar vein, but like it feels more like the SNES F Zero of Mario Kart games (which, on that note, F Zero 99 does a DAMN good job of emulating) its complete and utter chaos in 150cc and i love it

During the Wii era, so many first party games had unspeakably cruel and perfectionist challenges. Wii Sports is a fun game until you try to get platinum medals in the training minigames. Mario Kart Wii is a fun game until you try to get star ranks.

The fact that you haven't mentioned Funky Kong and why it's undoubtedly the best character in the game (and arguably the only good one) to the point it's close to 100 % you're gonna find at least half of your opponents in any online race using him is really odd to say the least.

The reason I didn't mention him is because using him hardly makes a real difference. His speed bonus - at least, when playing online - is barely noticeable. To put it into perspective, when another character using the Flame Runner would be wheelieing at around 95 KMH, Funky using the Flame Runner would be wheelieing at around 96 KMH. In time trials, using Funky (or Daisy) is a lot more important, since it's about getting the fastest, most optimized time possible.

I've actually outran the flame runner with a kart, particularly with the wild wing (the best kart in the game) by relying heavily on charging super mini turbos by any means necessary. I did this on Waluigi Stadium

I’m honestly surprised I never played this version of MK. I started with the original, then played MK64, skipped double dash (had a GC but played more Monkey Ball and NFL games on it) played MK DS (still playing to this day as well), skipped MK Wii (was too busy having fun playing WW2 ACES) skipped MK7 (3DS was meh) skipped MK8 (Wii U was a joke of a console to be honest) and returned to MK8 Deluxe on switch. I guess the motion controls of the wii were just something I couldn’t get used to in racing games.

I always feel like people need to distinguish a broken game from a bad game. A bad game is one that is unfun, and has a bunch of involuntary glitches or is so horribly balanced you can't play what you actually enjoy. But a broken game is one like mario kart wii, or skyrim. Games that have a plenty of glitches but you have to actively do them or are hard to discover on accident. Because broken games are more interesting on replays where you care less about the integrity of the experience. That's why games that have good speedruns always have glitches. And there are still glitchless speedruns if you don't like the glitches that are being used.
