Actually there are seven extant species of bear, the Giant Panda (Ailuropoda Melanoleuca) is not actually counted as a bear, while a bear is any animal belonging to the family Ursidae, the giant panda is only living representative of a separate family, which is the family Ailuropodidae, these two families are the only extant families of the superfamily Ursoidea, this is similar to how the Red Panda (Ailurus Fulgens) along with its fossil relatives are treated as a distinct family (Ailuridae) from Procyonidae (which now just includes only the raccoons, ringtail, and cacomistle), since coatis, olingos, olinguitos, and kinkajous form a monophyletic group, which is another separate family known as Nasuidae, in fact a convergently evolved superfamily called Procyonoidea includes the families Procyonidae, Nasuidae, and Ailuridae as well as the family Mephitidae (Skunks and Stink Badgers), this is now because living carnivorans are divided into only twenty-five families: Canidae (Dogs), Ursidae (Bears), Ailuropodidae (Giant Panda), Phocidae (Seals), Cystophoridae (Hooded Seal and Elephant Seals), Otariidae (Sea Lions and Fur Seals), Odobenidae (Walrus), Mephitidae (Skunks and Stink Badgers), Procyonidae (Raccoons, Ringtail, and Cacomistle), Nasuidae (Coatis, Olingos, Olinguito, and Kinkajou), Ailuridae (Red Panda), Melidae (Badgers), Mustelidae (Weasels, Ferrets, and Minks), Ictonychidae (Zorillas, Muishund, Shulang, Huro, Grisons, Wolverine, Tayra, Martens, and Fisher), Lutridae (Otters), Felidae (Cats), Protelidae (Aardwolf), Hyaenidae (Hyenas), Nandiniidae (African Palm Civet), Prionodontidae (Linsangs), Poianidae (Oyans), Genettidae (Genets), Viverridae (Civets), Herpestidae (Mongooses), and Eupleridae (Malagasy Carnivorans).

I always think it's funny when we come across information that is basically scientists squabbling over syntax. Gives me a chuckle. ;)
