I'd forgotten about the seed-covered suet ball and didn't have the heart to take down the bird feeder. Overall, a pretty good haul for Simone.
Yes, in the future I'll be more diligent about removing food sources. Let's just say I wanted to see how this would play out.
Great audio of the cubs. Both very vocal this time, especially the greedy one!

At this time she's still nursing them and teaching them what to eat, and not, in the woods nearby. On the menu, insects, larvae, grasses, roots, succulents, whatever is available. Soon, they'll eat the first berries and nuts. Later still, acorns from the numerous oak trees. It's what helps them put on weight before winter. And naturally, small animals whenever they get the chance - rodents, moles, &c.

There's a famous American children's picture book called The Fourteen Bears Summer and Winter that I think they'd all really enjoy. 😁👍 I think of that book when I watch these videos - it's about a sweet bear family that goes out exploring together and among the many places they visit is their human neighbors' farmhouse by their forest - only there's a mom and dad bear and their 12 cubs, hence the title. 😜

He likely fed them before in that spot a few times to earn their trust. It's similar to what people do on those tourist boats, it's called "chumming" to get whales, even sharks to appear in the same spots on their rides. It's not great in my opinion, because then the Mother or animal that is trusting to get food in that spot the entire time might lose their natural instinct to hunt on their own, and when the human who has been feeding them eventually isn't there anymore, they might wait around for food and end up having additional issues. I think it's fine if the animal is taken in from the wild because it wouldn't have survived on it's own or where it was and they nurture it and just keep them, but just for temporary it's not good because you are essentially tricking them into thinking that will be a food source forever.
@adrestianyx7441
@adrestianyx7441 2 жыл бұрын
Following up on my comment. I noticed a tag of some kind on Mom's upper right ear, so she and the babies may be watched and kept track of for a specific reason when they are out in the wild which is a good thing... it means perhaps there was a health issue, or some other issue where this man stepped in to help them through it, but still allows them to go back naturally into the woods. Only my guess.
@aphyngodiva2551
@aphyngodiva2551 2 жыл бұрын
@@adrestianyx7441 I'm not sure if this person has ever fed them intentionally, but definitely has unintentionally with the bird feeders as seen in this video, and bears are smart, often it can only take them getting a high value reward once for them to remember a place has a great source of food, such as cars, camps, and houses. This bear is definitely canvasing houses for food and has learned human habitations = food (particularly watch the very end, how she leaves walking along the backyard fences, definitely canvasing the neighborhood), probably why it is tagged, I'd bet money it is a "problem bear", and sadly her cubs are going to become the same... Even sadder, human habitations aren't meant to support one bear, let alone three, so if both cubs survive into adulthood they will most likely escalate in behavior ie breaking into houses, and this could lead to them being euthanized if it becomes a recurring problem. Relocated bears will still return, while they will still try it, it isn't effective. If their local wildlife control has the funds they can do hazing which is often more effective, but doesn't always work.

As fun as it is for humans to rag on humans' inconsiderate nature, if the bear could not get at what she was after by nudging and prodding the bird feeder, she would have pulled it down from it's hanger and torn it apart, if that was necessary to get at what ever food she smelled. She isn't being polite, she is being efficient - the most amount of reward for the least amount of effort.

That bravado has taught these bears that it's okay to come close to people, and as a result, they will do so again and again, and given that a lot of people won't feel safe with it, it will likely mean the death of these bears. What this poster has done has acclimated these bears to human presence and to associate people with food, and as such, the poster has set these bears up for a VERY dangerous future and bad end. A bear's safety and life is found in staying the hell away from people.

Oh, dear video camera inventor, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you for giving us the power to capture the wildest moments of wildlife without actually having to wrestle with bears or dance with flamingos. It's truly a blessing to be able to watch majestic creatures from the comfort of our couches, with a bowl of popcorn in one hand and a remote control in the other. You've turned us all into honorary nature documentarians, albeit ones who occasionally trip over our own feet or forget to press the record button. So, here's to you, dear inventor, for making us feel like National Geographic explorers without any of the mosquito bites or fear of being chased by a ferocious squirrel. Cheers!

I had a similar experience with a mama bear and 3 Cubs in NH until one day when her Cubs were a little bigger and they were “bulking up” for winter that she and her Cubs attempted to break into my kitchen. She got her long claws into a crack in the window and with her incredible strength broke a large window. I had to fight her back by hitting her on her nose. Yes the are gorgeous until you experience their strength in an unwanted way. Be careful! Keep all your windows closed and LOCKED.
