It's the beginning of the camping and hiking season and a lot of folks are heading for the woods and into bear country. Many of them are armed with bear spray and feel safe, but are they? I think either the bear spray industry or the hiking industry have misled folks into a false sense of security and hikers and outdoors enthusiasts need more information on self defense in the woods.

G20 was my first, strictly for bear defense, once I became a father I decided to be proactive in preventing my face from being ripped off in front of my daughter. You may never need it but peace of mind is the real beauty, just watch out for lead in that g20 coated hardcast only unless your running an aftermarket barrel, I love my 100% stock gen4. Your message is important and politics has nothing to do with it.

I am a backpacker. Love the outdoors. At the risk of sounding like I am bragging, let me say that I have put in MANY hours of research to determine the best way to keep myself safe in the woods. I have looked at both sides of this issue. I have looked at the statistics and taken my time to come to a fair and unbiased conclusion. My findings are as follows: In bear country a firearm is superior to bear spray. However, it is crucial that the person carrying the firearm is well practised and capable of making accurate shots in less than ideal circumstances. Many firearms owners do not put in the time to ensure that they are ready when the need arises. Get a firearm and practice. Also need to buy the RIGHT kind of ammo for a woods defense situation.

I completely agree. As a former gold explorer staking claims and taking mineral samples, my defence kit consisted of bear bangers(a minor deterance shot from a pen sized launcher), a S&W 45 magnum revolver, and finally a 12 gauge shotgun chambered with alternating buckshot and slugs. After my stories of working in the north of BC, I had a friend who decided to go tree planting during university break. Sadly for him, his choice to be armed with only bear bangers cost him his leg when he ended up chased and treed by an angry grizzly. He was fortunate to survive.

Great topic. I’ve shared before that I lived in Alaska for 30 years. My friend’s dad, Mr Cates, used to hike the Funny River trail every day to get in shape for hunting. He would sit on a log and fire up his backpacking stove to have a snack. The last time he did it a big brown bear stalked him and killed him. Mr Cates was experienced and careful. You can find articles about this bear attack by searching Cates bear attack on the Kenai. Keep a clean camp! On a trip to the Kustatan River some bears had trashed a tent full of donuts and other food and drink that was set up for an international flight seeing group. We heard cubs bawling that night, off in the distance. They kept coming our way and we ended up firing a shotgun blast in the dirt in front of a sow and her 2 year old cubs, which deterred them and got us through the night. We had a fire as well. They were back in the morning on the Kustatan River watching us catch Coho/silver salmon. we left that day by float plane. After they trashed a different float plane in the fall they were put down. All because they were habituated to finding food in camps. It was sobering to see bear scat with candy bar wrappers in it all the while the river was full of salmon and ripe berries were covering the banks.

I saw one years ago about a bear and a rabbit that were taking dump in the woods, side by side. The bear asked the rabbit, "hey... do you have problems with it sticking to your fur?" and the rabbit replied, "No. Not really". So the bear picked him up and wiped his hiney with him. 😂

Sir, thank you for this video. It is about time that someone on youtube stood up and told the truth about having "protection" when out in the wilderness. The other travelers have videos about self-protection when traveling off grid, especially the solo campers, but when it comes down to having adequate protection they are afraid to mention the firearms that they carry as well. I suppose they are afraid of negative comments or youtube censure. And like you stated, the pioneers did not go out into the wilderness without a rifle. Also, I worked in Yellowstone National Park in the 1970s, and we were always told to be vigilant when hiking in the back country on our days off, and to make noise and make yourself look bigger and to slowly retreat when a grizzly came after you. Yet, every time a park ranger went out to patrol the backcountry, they had one or two rifles on the rack in the back of the pickup truck as well as their sidearms. So clearly the rangers knew better. It is unfortunate that in today's criminal climate, we, a "civilized" nation are almost forced to be armed, especially in the wilds. There are no police to respond when you are in the middle of nowhere, the two-legged creatures and career criminals are out there, armed, and will show you about as much mercy as the grizzly. Remember, firearms for farmers and ranchers in the West are tools for survival, and are a part of riding out to mend fences or check on herds. Better to carry and have protection and if caught, get a misdemeanor ticket than to be the object of a "breaking news" story about a hiker mauled by a grizzly on the local broadcast station. And of course, always use common sense and try to back away, and know how to shoot and maintain your firearm.

Not a rant but an honest response to why people need to think about the many ways to camp safely so you can enjoy this gorgeous country but stay alive. This is also why I choose to have a cargo trailer as I would never get any sleep in a tent. Between things that slither on the ground or want to eat my food or me and my dog 😮… nope

Good rant. I worked for (and retired from) a large oil company. I spoke with several geologists who told me when they were working in Alaska in remote areas, they were each trained with and issued a Marlin 1895 in .45-70 while in the field. None had ever had any encounters with bears or other wildlife, but all were glad they had the rifle. That was back in the 90s. Things might have changed these days.

Hiking and came across a lady with a toddler who was just crying and screaming. I kind of kept an eye on them until they got back to their car. Always wondered if she would have been upset to know a guy with a gun was protecting her and her kid. Some of these people are plain nuts.

You are correct, sir. The "experts" also used to tell you that playing dead was the best defense. I say it's the best way to end up dead. And bear spray might stop a brown bear that's just curious, but not one in full attack mode. Before tent camping in bear country some years back, I read just about everything I could find regarding documented bear attacks. The brown bear is unique in that it can and will continue an attack even with mortal wounds (Lewis and Clarke documented such an encounter). Carrying a rifle was not feasible in my situation, and I read about a couple of successful brown bear defense encounters using handguns. I recall one was by a forest ranger who used his service pistol - a .40 cal hand gun. It took 12 rounds to put the grizzly down. The .40 cal has a good combination of size and velocity, with more lethality than some larger rounds, and can be had with large capacity mags without much bulk. As stated, a high powered rifle or shotgun would be much better than a hand gun, but I'd take a high capacity .40 cal (or similar) hand gun over bear spray every day of the week. A more powerful round would be better, but the high powered hand guns are typically in revolver style with only 6 rounds, and you have to assume you're not going to land every round when the bear is a chargin' and your hands are a shakin'. Bear spray is just pepper seasoning for the human steak.

So glad , grateful and happy you addressed this topic!! Two hunters were killed in BC by a grizzly bear as they were field dressing a deer , their rifles were just a couple of feet away, one should have been standing guard and the other field dress . Also drives me nuts when people stop on side of highways to feed the elk , deer or other animals, not only very extremely dangerous but a “fed bear is absolutely dangerous bear “ but they usually have to be put down because they go from being afraid of humans to stalking humans, grizzly is a stealth stalker “ soon as a bear or other animals get food with human scent then there is no stopping them and they can go from 0 to approximately 35 miles per hour in a couple of seconds ( I know by experience!) important to keep a clean camp , never ever eat or cook food in your tent , nothing in a tent but clothing, no toothbrush or paste , shampoo or other toiletries , even more dangerous than a grizzly is Moose , they can be very far away and decide to attack you ! Normal healthy animals for the most part stay away from humans, if one is charging it means something else is up with it or you are between mom and baby

If attacked by a moose, get behind a big or medium size tree. Keep moving around the tree if the moose tries to get to you. It sure is not very flexible, and not very smart, and will soon give up after having been standing at the other side of the tree, staring at you, not knowing what to do. This worked for me...😉

What I may also add is it's not only the animals in the woods but truth be told there are also human predators that unfortunately roam the camp grounds and forests as well and look for prey.I personally have hiked up on illegal grow operations and other dangerous activities where they are least expected, not fun. I live in BC and camp in remote places solo. I was convinced by my RCMP friend many years ago that I was an idiot for going to these places armed only with a slingshot and a fishing rod! I now camp with a .12 gauge triple barrel shotgun and a .44 mag rifle close by my side. After spending many years hiking into Grizzly country armed with only a pocket knife, you need to be very smart on how to avoid confrontations! Make lots of noise, be wary of your food at all times, and then make more noise. Great video on bear spray vs firearms!!

Rick, thank you for being a Voice of Reason. You have offered historical context along with valid reasons to defend oneself against dangerous game if they attack. Firearms in the hands of responsible citizens are strictly for DEFENSE! and never for offense. Seek training, practice proficiency on any regular basis. Bear Hunting Magazine has an article on line titled "Firearm Vs. Bear Spray". It mentions the wind factor, accessing the weapon, carrying both spray and gun, and other points. Here's part of it: Statistically, bear spray is more effective at deterring a charging bear. In a study done in 2008 (Smith et. al. 2008), researchers analyzed 83 bear spray incidents (61 brown bears, 20 black bears and two polar bear). Red Pepper spray proved over 90% successful on stopping the bear’s “undesirable” activity. 98% of people involved in these incidents were unharmed by the bear. However, fourteen percent of the incidents resulted in negative side effects upon the human (they were effected by the spray) and three percent left the user incapacitated. In similar study on firearms (Smith et. al. 2012), they were effective 84% with handguns and 76% with rifles to stop bears from undesirable behavior. The study analyzed 269 bear-human conflicts in Alaska from 1883-2009. The study said, “firearm bearers suffered the same injury rates in close encounters with bears whether they used firearms or not.” Basically, firearms didn’t statistically keep people from getting injured by bears. This means that people shot bears that still attacked them.

@@markandrews4818 Yes, Gonagain kept his cool and has a 10mm, a high protection combination. For me, who is below average in practice and skill with a gun, bear spray is probably better protection. Also accidental discharge of bear spray is less likely to be serious than a gun accident. I'm not so practiced with gun safety, and self-deceived, to think that gun accidents are just for the other guy. However I also agree that if a grizzly is enraged, I'm toast with just bear spray. I didn't spray in time.

We just had a mt lion attack in California which was fetal to a young man while the other one who it injured escaped away to seek help. It reminded me of this video why its important to be armed. They tried to look bigger and did everything they were thought but it still attacked. You just never know, stay safe out there everyone

Some bears actually like the bear spray. They have been seen rolling on the red spray on the ground. I'm with you. I carry an FN 10 millimeter and a 12 gauge Bullpup shotgun. A shotgun to the face will slow them down enough for you to get out your 10 millimeter. The issue with the pistol is if it's a full on charge, you have to hit them with the first round ,cause they can cover 30 yards in 2 seconds, and you might not have time for a second shot. Very sensible advice you have. Too many young people think grizzlies are like Yogi Bear.

I'm 69 and hike less than I did in the past. I haven't camped in a tent since the 70's. I do carry a revolver for protection. I grew up on a farm, so firearms were a part of life. It's common sense to have the means to protect oneself or others in any environment.

Although very few grizzlies in NH, Mr. Glock always accompanies me into the woods. Bear spray lives in my trailer in case of HUMAN intrusion.

Last year while camping in a area where Grizzlies and black bears are very active, I was at the end of the road with a small camper when a older couple came hiking up the trail headed into the mountains. They both had small backpacks on and was clearly intending to be out for the day. I spoke to them briefly, long enough to ascertain they were not locals and I asked them if they had any means to defend themselves against bears? They obviously were surprised by the question. No firearm, no bear spray and no mental consciousness of the danger they were placing themselves in. I dug around and found an extra bear spray and gave it to them and they went on into the woods. It served to make me aware that a lot of people are not aware of the seriousness of the danger posed by the introduction of Grizzlies back into The Northwest by the Federal fish and Wildlife Service. These bears are increasing every year, making it more and more dangerous to venture into the mountains. A grizzly bear is extremely intelligent and fears nothing. To a Grizzly, you are nothing but protein, and if he is hungry, he will not hesitate to stalk you just like he does the elk or deer, or even black bears. (Yes bears eat other bears) I am glad someone finally tells the unvarnished truth about bear spray. While I may halt a bluff charge, if a Grizzly sees you as a threat or a meal, it most assuredly will not stop them.

Thank you very much. Its also a wise way to deal with the two legged freaks that might cause you harm. I have seen videos mt lions one trying to attack and one had to be shot to stop the attack. Dude literally shot it while on the air jumping at him after many warnings as per expert instructions. Personally I'll have 2 while hiking or camping in bear country. Also trailers provide more safety than fragile tents

I have a Cabelas Alakanac tent with a bear door in it. Lucky I wasn't in it at the time. It was a black bear.

I live in Alabama in the country on 11 acres. When I leave the immediate area of my yard to go further on the property I am always armed. We have coyotes, and bobcats that regularly show up on my trail cams. There have been reports of mountain lions and black bears not far from here as well. It only makes sense to protect yourself. I agree that the wind doesn’t affect a bullet as much as it affects a cloud of bear spray.

Good , realistic advice, thank you. Too many people live in a Disney fantasy where their idea of a bear is Yogi Bear, not realistic at all, and very dangerous. You made some very good points and I won't go over them again but , hopefully your sensible advice, if taken, will save some lives. You don't owe anyone an apology . 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

I'm 64 years old and grew up in the woods of western Montana..My home and work has always been in the woods..I never go into the woods without a firearm..Whether it is for 2 legged or 4 legged predators, I'm always armed and prepared..Real unbiased studies have shown even a 9mm handgun is a better deterrent than bear spray..The people in power care more for animals than people sad to say..Even this topic is political... I couldn't agree more with you..I knew you were smart!

We came across bison fur on a narrow trail in Yellowstone. We always wondered since then if bear spray would work on a bison. They seem pretty forceful and determined when they want to be.

Totally agree with you. Had a friend years ago that was a ranger in Colorado. He had to go into a grove of trees to dispatch a wounded bear. He unloaded a 44magnum into the bear and thought it would never stop charging. Truly believe in self protection.

Thank you. I'm on my 40th yr. in the Rockies, starting my 20th in N.W. Montana. I don't hike/camp in the parks or on well traveled trails. Even with my pack, I carry a short 12 ga. and a magnum handgun. I love the woods and always plan on going home and telling the wife bear stories and I have a few. First thing I say when we get out of the truck is " Plan on running into a bear today"

Very good points. I’ve encountered three grizzlies in my life and was pretty scared, even though they never came at me. Having a grizzly staring at you from 40 yards away will make you think twice about bear spray. 10 mm for me at all times when traveling in the Rockies. Plus Shotgun in the truck or RV. I’ve been in the same situation. He never got particularly aggressive but he was staying close enough that had he charged I would have had no time for spray to have an effect on him. My .44 mag Ruger was a bit of comfort but it felt ridiculously puny compared to that monster. It was a bizarre situation in that he would not let me just walk away from his territory but stayed nearby “ghosting” me for several miles until I reached my vehicle. Since that day I carry a .45-70 Marlin whenever I possibly can.

@@NorrisNoggs That Marlin is a good gun to have around. A buddy of mine who sometimes travels with us keeps his in his truck. Great gun. I’d love to carry a 44 but to be honest I can’t shoot them well. Single action first shot is okay for me but then it’s all bad from there. As Dirty Harry said “ A man’s got to know his limitations “. Informed and common sense advice. Here in Wyoming, there is a very real chance of getting "self-sprayed"...we're the windiest state in the USA; 15-20 MPH breezes are the norm, 40-50 is not at all uncommon, and 80-100 happens a couple times a year. At least two of the most recent fatal grizzly attacks involved bear spray...obviously it wasn't as universally effective as many "experts" make it out to be. When I go into bear country I carry a snub-nosed 454 Casull, because I have it with me at all times, it can be used one-handed, and the loads I use will out-penetrate anything from a shotgun and any rifle short of a 416 Rigby. Be safe out there!

Great advice people think they would have time to do all the friendly things to that bear...that bear wants to kill you pull your large caliber firearm and stop him. People also think that they can just call the police if they are threatened in town by a thug, just how long will it take for the police to respond to come save you or someone else? Our right to carry a firearm has ben so watered down, every one should carry so thugs would think about not bothering you. Thanks for your videos.

Betting my life on a spray that only causes discomfort is not a bet I would ever make. Bear spray is a good deterrent to discourage the bear if you are confident enough you can draw a backup weapon in time.

Doesn't it seem like many or most people attacked by bear have dogs with them? I am beginning to think that a dog can continually aggravate a bear to the point that after the dog runs back the bear wants vengeance. Am I wrong? Thanks Rick.

In Canada we have tight laws on firearms. We are not allowed sidearms for protection unless you are able to get special permiting and that is very rare. Unless your are law enforcement. For bush protection Long guns like a Defender 12gauge is your only choice or other rifle. If your in a Park Especially a National park its Zero Guns period. So Bear spray is your only choice other than. Being smart. Etc.

1) The couple were camping in Banff National Park, Alberta (not BC); 2) We're not permitted to carry firearms in a national park; 3) The reminder to keep the fire burning all night is perfect; 4) Your rant is kind and empathetic sir, but not pertinent to us Canadians, as we're not permitted to carry firearms like our southern brothers and sisters. I'm curious, how is that "your choice", when I suspect that plenty of Canadians would like to have that *actual* choice/option, but are denied it by their government under the penalty of hefty fines and/or prison time? Seems like a bit of an illusion of "your choice". And I'm not your semi typical gun loving, right wing, America f'yeah, type US citizen. But I am concerned with the increasing disembowelment of freedoms and rights on civilians by governments all around the world. People should have the right to defend themselves while also enjoying nature. And btw, I favor bear spray slightly over fire arms, because research shows that on average, it is more effective in stopping bear attacks. But I also see nothing wrong with having both on you, and having a gun as a "in case, backup" in case the bear spray doesn't work.

I don’t mean to be argumentative because I love Canada and it’s people. It’s just odd that you used the word choice. Because every single politician in Canada has made the choice for their families and themselves to be protected by firearms. And I mean 100% of them. Canadian politicians,cops, judges and every other “important person” is protected 24/7 by firearms. In their homes and out. In their workplace and their children’s schools. It’s only the pesky citizens that don’t have a choice to protect their families and themselves anywhere. To be fair this is true for the entire world,not just Canada. Even in countries that are the most hostile towards firearms have 100% of their rulers protected with them. When you really think about it though it makes sense. Everyone knows that their lives are more valuable than ours. I mean come on, us and our pathetic jobs compared to the important things they are doing. Us and our ugly wives and dumb kids compared to their beautiful wives and all the wonderful achievements that their children are destined for. Hell they’re probably doing most of us a favor by not allowing us to have firearms. We’d probably just shoot ourselves so we don’t infect the air that the important people depend upon to breathe.

I’m ok with your advice, although I’ve encountered many black bears on trails in my home state of Colorado. I stopped, made myself look big and yelled at the bear. Every time, the bear turned and ran away. In my area, we can’t take our trash to the curb until we see the trash truck. I even have a bear proof trash toter. I’m fine with gun carry for self defense, but I’m strongly opposed to idiots who feel the need to use it to shoot trees, etc.
