In this video, Captain Cody compares the effectiveness of bear spray to firearms. Research studies have shown that bear spray is 92 percent effective at stopping undesirable bear behavior. Rifles and shotguns are 76 percent effective at stopping aggressive bear behavior and pistols are 84 percent effective at stopping aggressive bear behavior.
These statistics do not compare apples to apples and Cody suggests that firearms are probably the most effective at stopping a bear during an actual attack. Bear spray is a great option and is important to carry while hiking and hunting in bear country.
This video also talks about how to use bear spray, firearm safety, and using bear bells to make noise while hiking in the woods. It is also important to walk in open areas when possible to avoid accidentally getting to close to a bear.

Hope Alaska, August 2020. Man was killed by a brown bear while clearing a trail near his home. Empty can of spray was found near his body. He didnt bring his gun that day. Sad story. Last year along the Turnagain Arm there was a black bear harassing hikers and sprayed many times. The final epusode it was sprayed and continued to follow the hikers out. Fish & Game was called by the hikers who came out and dispatched said bear. I live in Anchorage and there are many warning signs up on trails where recent encounters using spray did not cause the bear to leave but it did stop an attack. My point there is the bears are becoming less detered by spray. I carry both options when hiking.

@@Buffatestuff I am sure you strongly believe that sir and probably have read those stats from what you believe to be a credible source but that is still unfortunately not true. Last year a lady from our area was killed in a bear attack. Her husband came out of the cabin and sprayed the bear but he said it only seemed to make the bear madder. He went back to the cabin , grabbed his rifle and shot the bear. This is a true story and I know some of the ladies family as well a some of her husbands family. There are other documented cases of pepper spray failure . Check out the story of Todd Orr from Bozeman Montana . I am not trying to win any arguments, I am just trying to point people to the truth.

@@Buffatestuff that’s just patently false, there are numerous incidents where bear spray didn’t work and the person was killed. There are also plenty of cases where firearms didn’t work, but there is no evidence bear spray is more effective. The only study that showed that included instances where nuisance bears digging through trash cans were driven away with bear spray so that study is what’s bullshit.

I agree with most of your video. The only question I have is this: If your are carrying bear spray and a firearm (pistol, long gun) if you have a sudden attack, you have a split second to decide which to use . Bear spray will deter some bears. However, a bear that is determined to attack you it is of no use. That is why you never hike alone in Grizzly country.

I know this is an old video by now, but I'm glad you pointed out the discrepancy in the wordage comparing bear spray to firearms. I've read that bear spray is much, much less effective against a charging/attacking bear, whereas firearms are much more effective once you weed put incidents involving firearm malfunctions/failures to fire - something like 97% effective, I believe? So if a bear gets curious, spray it. If it attacks, shoot it. Then fill out the paperwork.

Bear spray is effective on curious bears, not as effective on aggressive bears. So use which tool according to the situation. If you have to choose 1, for weight, or room, pick the pistol. Here's the catch though, you need to practice to be proficient, and you need hardcast lead, solid copper, brass, or fmj. Don't use hollow points for bear defense! Hollow points, even in large caliber handguns like .44 magnum can splatter/deflect off the skull, and not Penetrate enough in soft tissue.

I have read the entire report by Smith and Herrero that you refer to. The fact that they compiled data from over 100 years is one of the biggest problems with the report. Some of the data they used was from the old black powder days and they noted in there report that , according to their stats , the number one cause of firearms failure to defend a bear attack was the inability to reload. Well NO SHIT SHERLOCK !!! Maybe they should have limited the scope of their data to only include modern repeating firearms that were in common use from the mid 1980's and forward when people started using pepper spray for bear defense . The study was far from a fair comparison. The other point that is often overlooked in the Smith. Herrero study is the fact that, in most of the cases where pepper spray was used , the bears were curious and were not displaying any aggressive behaviour. In only about 13% of the incidents they documented, where pepper spray was used, were the bears showing any aggressive behaviour and in the few cases when the bears came on a full on charge, the bears charge right trough the pepper spray and the person was injured. These are the facts about what is really written in the report and anyone can look it up and read it for themselves if they don't believe it. The study is written by Steve Smith and Stephen Herreo and is in the Journal of Wildlife management .

Billy, you bring up some good points and I agree! The often stated idea that bear spray is more effective is because it is rated at stopping undesirable bear behavior.
