You shouldn’t recommend 40 gal tanks. They do work, but are not ideal. Especially for an adult 40 gallon is the absolute minimum size you should consider

love this. I miss having a bearded dragon I am going to be getting one here this spring as it is way to freaking cold here it drops to 20 degree's and some times even colder in winter. but I have the 55 gallon long I just need to get the lid for it and the lighting and heating for the beardy and the bedding I will be decking it out like it is a mansion. I can't wait til spring I will probably get two but i don't know yet. I am going to start breeding mealworms again and i want to try my hands at crickets and roaches but i haven't had any luck finding good care video of breeding roaches.

Keep in mind that a 55 gallon isn’t big enough for an adult bearded dragon, it’s far too narrow. Adults need a 4x2x2’ enclosure minimum, and larger is ideal.

I cut off the video when he said 40-60g. A baby can have that size but they will NEED a 120g when they are juvenile and adult. Easy when their a adult vs anything younger than a juvenile. Cause they require so much when they are young vs an adult.
@TikisGeckos
@TikisGeckos Жыл бұрын
This is not true. Not sure how many dragons you have cared for and how many bearded dragon experts you know but we have over 15 years experience with these animals. A bigger enclosure size certainly does not hurt for adults but for the average keeper a 40-60 gallon enclosure is fine depending on the size of the animal. Please do your research next time you comment something like that.
@cupcakesxrushful
@cupcakesxrushful Жыл бұрын
Lmfao I don’t need to do my research. You never know how big or long they will get cause they can get a little bigger. Again. Anything younger than a juvenile. Needs a 40-60g. But juvenile to adult need a 120g. Cause of growth , since they hit that within a year. Growing really fast. Years of experience, means nothing. Trust me. I run into people that have 4-10 years etc. and they still make mistakes. Regardless, on what job they do. That’s a fact. In fact, idk why you even brought that up tbh. I was just talking about the tank and I didn’t like how it was specified so I left a comment and exit out. Simple.

One thing to note: tank size is not accurate. An adult bearded dragon is almost 2 feet long from nose to tail tip. You should have a 4x2x2 foot tank or bigger. Most of the rest of what is here is good info.

?? I'm new to reptiles. My daughter got her 8 yr old son one 3 months ago and as usual I end up taking care of it. I thought a cold blooded lizard would be boring, but I've really gotten attached and so has she,"Mango". She isn't crazy about the kids, but we really have bonded. She is cuddling on my chest now. My concern is her lack of movement. In her very nice and expensive tank she lays on the same perch and when I take her out she rarely tries to explore. Her appetite is great and appears to be healthy. Should I be concerned or just chalk it up to being in a very new environment? She is about one year old. Never,ever thought a lizard would like me and for both of us to become attached. FYI, I'm 71yrs old and in great shape, so I expect to be her buddy for a long time. Thank you for your videos and an answer if given.

It makes me sad to see 40-60 gal tanks still being recommended for adult beardies after all this time. Sure, they could live in it, but you could live in a 10ft by 5ft room your whole life too. Would you want to? There’s some argument for keeping them in smaller enclosures for breeding perhaps, but if they’re your pet, wouldn’t you want to give them a 120 gal? Just better quality of life, more room for enrichment. It’s the difference between living in a prison cell vs living in a small house. That’s my take anyway.

I keep mine in a 4x2x2 and not being a breeder I won't go any smaller. I will sleep better at night if nothing else...lol. I think the people breeding and selling bearded dragons should also tell interested buyers or people looking for information on them how many insects they really need as babies and juveniles. I had to breed dubia to keep a good fresh supply for my beardie without paying a fortune for insects. I know most are probably keeping them in too small of an enclosure, not giving them adequate light, and not feeding them correctly.

How long does brumation tend to last with the beardie’s as there doesn’t seem to be a lot of information surrounding brumation in captivity and what is the best things to do during the brumation period?
@TikisGeckos
@TikisGeckos Жыл бұрын
It really depends on your area. I have had alot of beardies that do not go into brumation but we are also in south florida where we have pretty constant warm temperatures all year. It can be around 3 months but I have seen it vary through out the years. We just follow the animals behaviour and adjust the lighting period accordingly. For the average keeper I would say just keep taking care of your dragon the same exact way but understand that it will not have the same appetite as it does when its not in brumation. You can also shorten the lighting period from 10-12 hours to 6-8.

I’ll end the debate right now. I can tell you I have a no water dish bias BUT after years of me testing theories and methods out, I found that if you have an enclosure that’s 120 gallons or bigger, you can actually get away with having a small water dish on a cool side of the enclosure. I noticed it doesn’t have an effect on humidity and when they want to cool off or thermal regulate, they can jump on a cool side to eat or drink. Bearded dragons aren’t dumb creatures. They know what they need and will find it. If they want to get off their basking spots to cool off they’ll find a way. One thing to note is material of enclosure. Some hold humidity more than others etc. I for one keep my bearded dragons in 5x4x4. One per enclosure.

This just shows how far behind the USA is in terms of animal welfare and care/husbandry. In Europe where I am, standards have moved on quite significantly. 4x2x2 are seen the bare minimum enclosure size, not the recommended ideal size, which in some countries is now legally 5x3x3. This is because in something smaller, the dragon isn’t able to exhibit all of their natural behaviours such as climbing, digging and burrowing.

Politically incorrect opinion: A 40 br. is just fine for most adult bearded dragons. The overall square footage of a 40 br. is not all that different. There is also no proven evidence of negative health welfare from them being housed in a 40 as long as other parameters are being met.
@NerdyOutdoorVeteran
@NerdyOutdoorVeteran 5 ай бұрын
A 4x2x2 is almost 10 square feet more than a 40 gallon tank. You go from 6 square feet to 16 square feet. That’s more than double the room……. Just because you could live in a closet doesn’t mean it’s right.
@ericroscoe8654
@ericroscoe8654 5 ай бұрын
Greater minimum enclosure sizes are arbitrary and unenforceable standards to begin with. We are too focused on giving the animals what we think they want vs. what they actually want/need. People should remember that a larger enclosure is also actually going to be harder to achieve the optimal temperature & humidity in compared to the size/biomass of the animal in them. You can have a larger enclosure, but still be getting all of your other parameters incorrect; in this sense, this is creating a false sense of "doing better" just because you have a larger enclosure. A well-designed 40 gallon for a bearded dragon, which gets ample time out of the enclosure anyways, can be a better enclosure than just throwing one in a 4 x 2 with just a dollhouse and hammock and saying "it's good". There's also the cost/barrier to entry which is the reason a 40 is still suggested. Fish keepers aren't starting out with the $5K marine saltwater setup; they are every mom and little Timmy getting their first Tetra or goldfish from Petco or Petsmart for $50. We don't want kids & families getting priced out of the game before they can even get started. As a hobby, we need to start moving away from this "cookie-cutter"/one-size-fits all approach to everything and go back to addressing the needs of each specific species, and even individual animal.
