Happened to me once 16 miles off of Sebastian inlet. The ocean changed colors, if that makes sense. We were on a 23 Bluewater with twin 150 Yamahas. We were airborne most of the ride in. Last week a boater was killed by lightning here in Brevard. RIP captain. Be safe out there.

We have storms on Lake Erie that come in within 5-8 minutes. The lake can go from flat as glass to 6 foot waves in a few minutes. You don’t want to be caught in one, especially in the western basin. It’s only 30 feet deep, and rough seas can expose the rocks on the reefs and total a boat. The worst o ever hit was a rare full gale out of the southwest. It happens once in fifty years. It was April, and we were walleye fishing. I came around one of the islands to hit steady 8 foot breakers with about every tenth one around ten feet. We made it in, howbeit very slowly. The water temp was 41 degrees. In order to get the boat on the trailer, I had to jump in the water up to my chest and hold the transom steady so it wouldn’t pound into the dock. Fortunately cold water doesn’t bother me, even now at 67 years old, I have no trouble in it. That was in 1988. I still thank the Lord that we didn’t capsize on the way in.

So, I am at the Dr.'s office, waiting on the doc, watching Beachbum on a pier with Brad, the one that got away. He pulled up this video. How ironic. I am already subscribed. I told him about the new fishing store. I learn something new every day. 😊

Those Blackfin boats handle rough water extremely well. I was running a 31 Regulator from Key West to St.Pete and the same thing happened with the anchor. Pulled out about 100 foot of chain and rope. Had to put the manual crank on to get it back in.

From what you were saying about the weather, I would have headed back before you started trolling for wahoo. That's just me though. It's funny (to me) that nobody seems to have an auxilliary motor these days. Apparently modern outboards never have problems.......until they do.

You sure you weren't just dragging your anchor and it made it feel like a power drop off? I've done it and it transpired just as you described. Right down to the broken anchor at the end... That big thump you heard might have been the anchor coming up and hitting the bottom of the boat.

Is it just me or does it seem like the fish populations are increasing getting less. I mean we’re talking about the ocean. I would think that the boat would have been filled with a great amount of fish for the time that they were out there.
