I've seen so many look-alike guitars, even customs. It was a real pleasure to see how some simple touches could make this instrument stand out. What a beauty. Nice repair work too. "Minor Swing" great choice!

Did the crack seal up nicely? We didn't get a finished picture.
@alansturgess13245 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Very unusual not to be shown a close-up of the finished repair. In this case, because of that large side soundhole, matching views of both exterior and interior shots would have been very easy to film. In one shot of the top it looked like the treble end of the saddle had shrunk or the top had expanded. You could see a pale crescent of 'clean' wood.

I've seen these side holes before on other brands or makes and I wonder if it doesn't adversely effect the sound of the guitars, why not do this design more often if for no other reason than making any repairs needed in it's future would be easier, faster and therefore, cheaper?
@TomasAWalker534 жыл бұрын
@RDE Lutherie Thanks for answering my questions. Now I have more!! lol. Your observations of no R&D to save on costs to manufacture rings true for me as an amateur mechanic. How many times have I observed, while trying to repair something, the annoying habit of design engineers to give little or no thought of building into the design, ease of repair? In the case of guitars, as you've pointed out, the top is the most important side of a guitar and so repairs to them would be easier, less time consuming if they used the Kasha style. I do understand what you're saying though. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir. I've played guitars for the better part of fifty years but have only begun to delve into the pleasure of repairing and or modifying and struggle to understand the guitars of the last hundred years or so. My confusion hasn't been helped by the misinformation handed out by the mainstream companies we know or hear about. The fact that they all went to Japan or Korea, in the 70s was a bit of deception because they(as Americans themselves)knew the desire most fellow westerners would have in buying only "Made in the USA" for patriotic reasons as well as the perception that Asian made guitars were inferior. I bought and still have a Takamine F-385 12-string and was always happy with it until I learned it was an all-laminate guitar. Later Takamine themselves outsourced work to Korea and China while creating their own all-wood guitar line-up. My complaint is still that when researching guitars to buy, never did any company say that their product is a budget model and therefore shouldn't be confused with higher-priced all-wood brands. When I read advertisements I've since learned that they have code for describing their guitars like "Solid Spruce Top" then "Mahogany Sides and Back". To someone new to guitar construction they don't realize that the sides are plywood. Recently I've noticed newer model guitars being made with solid tops and laminate sides and it seems to me from what you said that that is actually a sound choice especially for campfire or outdoor players concerned with cracks etc. due to temperature changes and humidity. The difference this time is that they are being upfront about its construction materials. I think that stems from Seagull, Simon & Patrick using laminate Cherry back and sides with all solid tops. Then Martin designed a solid top cherry back guitar themselves. Again thanks for clearing up the issue on which side of an acoustic guitar is the most relevant when it comes to the overall sound.

@RDE Lutherie I would love to see and hear the guitar you've described. It sounds like an absolute masterpiece. I went to your channel, but I noticed that you don't have any videos. Is there anywhere I could sample your guitar?

Why didn't Mr. Beardsell step up and do the repair on warranty? Also that 'Barcus Berry' pickup (are they even still going?!!) is actually an LR Baggs I-beam, but of course you know that....

No talk of the obvious (what do you think) lack of humidity that caused the crack, and I am not sure why you did not humidify the guitar at your shop to close the crack before starting? Both of these things kinda puzzle me...

Hey!! we didn't get to see the finished project!! Lol I should send you my Fender acoustic and tell you to have a ball with it. That poor thing has more cracks in it than Nancy Pelosi has wrinkles lol. The sides, the top and even a new one starting on the back lol. The bridge pulled off a few years ago and I repaired that but I want to redo that because I only had a few minutes to make it work for my fiance's son to be able to play it so I just quickly put some super glue under it and place a heavy weight on it and told him to give it about an hour then restring it. It's held for almost 6 years but some of the glue came out and needs to be cleaned up. I always enjoy watching you it's rather soothing the way you do your videos. I still don't quite understand the purpose in the magnets, I understand the clamp but why the mags?
