Mama bear is beautiful! Cubbies are adorable!!!

What gorgeous babies, I have never seen a mother bear nursing her young before. They were so lively and playful.

Bears ate my water jug when I was camping there. We had all of our food secure, and I didn't think the bears would be attracted to our water, as there was a river only 100 feet away, yet I woke up to a collapsible 5 gallon water tank crushed and punctured with a bunch of teeth holes.

Whistling to alert a bear of your presence is not nearly enough. And how do you know you don't just sound like a song-bird to her. And what indication has she given that makes you think she knows you are there b/c nothing she's done on the video indicates she knows you are there? Why not use the international bear alert phrase: "Hey Bear. Hey Bear."

So, with hibernation a fact in a bear's life, I'm struck by how these adult bears eat...and eat...and eat...and eat...everything in sight...non-stop. If the hibernation period can last roughly seven months, then for the five or so months that mom is awake (I'm using a female with cubs in my example here), she has no choice but to engage in eating whatever she can...whenever she can...as she must put on in the vicinity of 40% extra body weight...perhaps as high as 50%? Watching it in action, as mom bear continuously shovels in mouthfuls of nothing more nutritious...nothing more delicious...than some form of a common field grass. I understand that the whole purpose of an animal hibernating is to specifically deal with the hardships and massive food shortages that typically accompany the winter months. In theory, I get it, but in practice, it just looks like an awful deal. As an adult bear, to continuously, each and every year, eat until you are so completely gorged that your body weight fluctuates as much as 40% - 50%, and to do this in a span as little as five months, just sounds so incredibly unhealthy. Now, I am obviously taking the viewpoint of the human body, where incredible weight changes mentioned previously for bears, and to hit these highs and lows every year of your adult life, and then somehow sleep it all off for seven straight months, sounds like a recipe for total body breakdown and as premature as premature death can be. I obviously understand that the bear's body has most likely evolved into a machine such as our human bodies, with peaks and plateaus, healthy variances within each, and an understanding of the species' ideal diet. Anyway, as I write this, I have just found myself thinking that say, for a one-year old cub who will be hibernating with mom, what about their dietary needs during the "gorge" season? As I initially think about it, what I see is actually what I don't see, which is while the mom eats everything not glued down, the cubs are doing nothing more than acting like cubs. They are still mostly drinking mom's milk, and on their ventures out, the cubs are generally playing, play fighting with each other, and sometimes, even sleeping. This energy-burning activity of the cubs playing is exactly the opposite of what mom is attempting to do. So, if mom must put on 40% - 50% excess body weight, what is required of the cubs for their slumber? Their weight gain is nothing more than a healthy, active cub who is growing stronger and heavier each day as he moves toward adulthood. Most of the cubs I see are lean 'n mean, so to me, there is no excess body weight to live off of for those seven months.

Thanks for all the comments. I feel the need to add. That suggestions of guns and bear spray should not be followed! It is illegal to carry, or discharge any weapons, including BB guns and bear spray, in the National Parks! To do so would be a federal crime. Bears very rarely attack people in the parks. If you are armed with knowledge, respect, and a good zoom on your camera, you can safely have amazing wild animal encounters. A safe distance is key. The most dangerous animal in the parks, by number of injuries, is - Deer. That's right deer. Far more people are injured by deer when people try to get that selfie with Bambi, than by any other animal in our parks. The second most dangerous, HUMANS. Bears don't even come close. Remember, bears and other wild life are protected in our Parks by federal law. Tourist who behave badly, are not. Besides, bears gotta eat too. Kidding, maybe. If you are too afraid to be in our parks without a weapon at your side. You should do us all a favor and just stay in the city.
