Josh Lucas is back to rank the Bears' defense with our 6 established categories. How many top players does the Bears defense have, how to they compare to teams around the NFL, and what does the list of needs look like this offseason?

Josh really adds such awesome insight that’s hard for fans and media people to catch. The Edwards/Edmunds discussion was great - how Edwards’ weaknesses force certain defensive looks and Edmunds had to cover for it. Seems like both played better when Flus figured out how to use his personnel

I feel like there should have been a follow-up question to Josh saying he highly doubts Jaylon Johnson will continue to be a good tackler after he gets his new contract. I realize there's a fairly obvious answer (the man got paid and doesn't want to risk his health), but it would've been nice to hear Josh say more about that.

You know I wish sometimes they would actually go in depth in these guys and explain why these guys are having trouble adjusting for example Dexter he was more highly touted coming out of high school then Jalen Carter was it was his bad luck that Florida went from a 4-3 defense his freshman year to a two Gap system it took him about half the year to to train out of that to one Gap react and got two and a half sacks in like eight games. Also, they might pick up a value DT in the draft, but they'll focus on Edge, give last year's rookies a chance to shine

I think Gervon Dexter is out of position . He is a natural five-tech (end) in a Bill Parcells/ Bill Cowher type 3-4 defense. Those guys are typical tall and they can play a bit higher because they aren't really trying to penetrate that much. Leonard Marshall, Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel come to mind. I know the Packers took his lunch money all day in the season finale.
@JJ-zr6fu
@JJ-zr6fu 4 ай бұрын
I’m team first but I will never fault a player for leaving for more money or ring chasing unless it’s with the packers. The teams talk about loyalty but will cut the player without blinking an eye. The cowboys sold the ND lb who blew his knee out on a team friendly deal and being a cowboy for life after a pro bowl year. They cut him half way through the contract to save the cap.

@disthymia6929
@disthymia6929 5 ай бұрын
It shows, both on the offense episode and this episode, that the Bears have way too many average players. Having average players is not bad, and obviously most of your players will be there, but we need more TOP players to win more than 10 games, especially on offense. The defense looks solid, but we need one more Top tier player and one or two more Good tier players to be able to be a good defense CONSISTENTLY (aka not collapsing like in those Lions, Broncos, and Browns games). I dont even have to mention offense, but we obviously need more than DJ Moore. A good QB, WR2, U TE, Center, and general OLine depth will get us over that playoff hump, but that's a lot to ask, especially for a historically incompetent Bears organization.
@flattailbob
@flattailbob 4 ай бұрын
Anyone else notice that between the two shows (offense and Defense) that they only had 16 players in the first two categories and one of those is Eddie Jackson? Both Hoge and Jahns want the Bears to draft Caleb with the first pick yet they showed how bad the depth is on the team! Talking out of both sides of their mouths is a strong point with them. They want to resign JJ but Lucas doubts they’ll see the same tackling from him next year? WTF JJs on his 5th year but has only played at that level one year and that was his contract year. Sign him and trade him.!

See, this is why I don't trust 'Flus. Like most GMs do, Poles got rid of the locker-room leaders from past régimes, Monty & Roquan Smith. Edwards plays well because he's a new one & enjoys the role. No one else on this team does well. They just do like what you describe Edmonds as doing, letting the plays come to them. Why _is_ that? There was a period of weeks right after obtaining Sweat where the entire team seemed to perform well. Okay it wasn't _exactly_ after they got Sweat. It was after D.J. Moore publicly expressed support for Fields. A few weeks later, as if commanded, all this public support ended then the play-calling returned to how it had been before this good period. Coincidence? No. 'Flus makes it Damned Clear in post game press conferences that He Decides what the *offense* is limited to even though he has no background in it. He's a micromanager & a tyrant who wants to think everything is under his control. Those good weeks showed he *can* run this team better. So why does he avoid doing so as often as he does? I think he deliberately keeps the team down & whether it's for better draft picks or any other excuse, it doesn't matter. If he now switches to doing things differently it'll show all the players still on the team he was tanking their games & careers. This breeds distrust. I damned well _hope_ Fields gets traded. For his _own_ sake.

T. J. Edwards has serious limitations covering fast backs, but so did Roquan. Edwards is overall better than Roquan in my opinion. When we had Roquan he wasn’t playing well. He often gets tackles but gets dragged for 2 more yards and rarely stops guys in their tracks. I think he is over rated. Edmonds when healthy is better than both of them!

Chicago's play callers and play designers couldn't utilize the talents and abilities of Justin Fields, what magic potion have they taken to make them able to recognize how to take advantage of skills that Caleb Williams has? Behind an offensive line that couldn't block a 5' 11" 21 year old who goes to the stands seeking mama's ninny while tears stream can't lead men in the NFL.. Trade that 1st pick take Marvin Harrison Jr and Olu Fashanu at nine, build the offensive line with a center and two guards. Draft or trade for an edge to equal Sweat, and draft Brendon Rice to complement MHJ

Putting Eddie Jackson on the same shelf as Edwards, Stevenson, and Gordon is comical. I like all the other takes, but Jesus is this dudes bias showing through. He drafted him so of course he thinks he is good, but a safety that doesnt/cant tackle isn't worth a shit when there are players like Minkah Fitzpatrick, and Jordan Poyer out there who can do both. I still dont understand why we all go to the guy who took Trubisky over Mahomes for his positional value evaluations. 😂😂😂

When he filled in outside his rookie year, he was incredible, they could have 2 top corners outside. Who cares about a 3!! They already invested too much on the defense!
