One great thing I notice about this scene is, he has a large cape on, they could have easily covered him with the cape during the transformation. Instead, they decided to draw every single frame of it so you can see *exactly* how it happened. It’s amazing

Not gonna lie I love both Prince Adam's 'Beast' appearance (you kinda get used to it) but I also love his human form. Seeing him transform into a human was without a doubt one of my favourite moments in the movie. I wish we got to see more of him as a human, maybe that would help with other people liking him. The biggest thing I love about this scene is Belle's reaction: she doesn't rush over and immediately kiss him or anything ridiculous like what happens in any other movie, she actually re-acquaints herself and tries to find something she recognises from his cursed form and he just stands there and lets her. Of course we all know that when she sees that his eyes are completely unchanged THAT's when she gets excited and thrilled and decides to kiss him.

I just looked at the final cut of this scene (fully colored and animated) to compare it with this one and I realized (and was disappointed) that in the final cut, they added a flash of light right before Beast's human face was transformed ( 3:34 - 3:35 ). It kinda wasted the effort of the slow transition of the face from beast to human that you could clearly see in this pencil version. I don't know if this is nitpicking but I just wish they didn't add that flash of light in the final version.

This scene always reminds me of a Romanesque, Renaissance-style painting or sculpture, what with the anatomy and way the body is posed at certain times and the way the cloth drapes. I assume that was what Glen was drawing off of for this scene. And he succeeded beautifully. :) It is like an animated Michelangelo painting.

Even in the rough pencil stage with unfinished scenes, incomplete drawings, and still frames in place of the drawings yet to be worked out, this scene makes me cry because of the sheer passion that went into making it into the final product. Anytime I need a reason to get back to my animation station, I look at pencil tests like this and remember that everything I want to do must be rough or incomplete first. It's how we get better with both timing and drawing skill, and that's how the final product can become the best version of itself. well if the people who added the colour did their jobs properly we wouldn't have responded that way and the "Expectation" would have followed through! Sorry I'm a bit bitter that they strayed so much from Glen's vision. I love him in the rough version, and I think he is a total stud here

Is it just me or that Prince Adam's transformation almost like butterfly metamorphosis when the cape wraps him?
@Varies16
@Varies16 Жыл бұрын
It's actually correct. It can also remind a rose in some shots. Those frames remind in fact the transformation of a butterfly metamorphosis, symbolizing a new life.

Whenever i come back to this scene i always think its the magic of love and thats freeing him from his beastly prison within. Hes finally breaking free. I say this because while he was unconscious during the transformation, he sorta broke free from his cape. Again such a beautiful moment.

Wow! Without the glowing VFX, we can clearly see the Beast’s transformation in its entirety, in pencil! You can just watch the transitions happening, the fluid and life like animation working its magic, and watch the Beast’s humanity restored. All done in pencil! …Why am I crying now?!

I just realized that I’ve been so entranced with this scene I haven’t noticed once my entire life that Belle is standing to the side when the Beast first starts to transform. Like I notice her move but I don’t think I’ve ever looked at her during that part lmao

I get the enveloping of the cape around him symbolic of the rose. It can also be a cocoon that he gradually bursts out of as his return to his humanity is complete.

Glen Keane has stated in interviews that this transformation sequence was strongly inspired by artistic depictions of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He's also the author of the excellent Christian children's book series "Adam Raccoon," which features his own original illustrations.

I finally found the entire "work in progress" version on my DVD. This is such a genuine work. I do not even think they used live reference footage, which seems impossible in the transformation ;) The design of the beast turned into human is just GREAT and has a lot of appealing. I love it. Keane is so so so talented!

You take this kind of thing for granted when you don't see the originals. Just watching the movie it's kind of seamless almost as if it was all done by machines, but when you see the sketches and the level of artistry it's really a humbling experience.
