Beast Wars is dear to my heart. I'm a survivor of extreme child abuse, and for a short summer my father had temporary custody of me. I watched Beast Wars, Mama's Family, and it defined me. I actually enjoyed myself and finally was happy and safe. Obviously I didn't have any chance to get any of the toys, but thinking about BW today I just cry because it was a pivotal part of me.

I'm glad that you were able to find that happiness, PJ. A lot of people did, in different, or same circumstances. I had to hide in my house from neighborhood bullies, and would watch the show on KZfaq with my dad, before the first Adpocalypse occurred. Found My light hearted courageous aspects in Beast Wars, and the realization of self empowerment in Beast Machines.

My absolute favorite moment was when Dinobot and Rattrap were fighting and Tarantulas tried to interrupt. Dinobot and Rattrap at the same time punched Tarantulas in the face 😂 Another fun memory was my mom asking my baby brother at the time. Why he always kept Waspinator and Terrosaur in pieces all the time? And he replied, but Mom that's how they always end up on the show 😂

Megatron was my absolute favorite, mostly because of the voice acting from David Kane. Anytime he would go "Yesssss" it made me smile. Even the Maximals called him out and often imitated him for talking the way he did.

This show hit so well. The voice acting was stellar. I remember getting so emotional during Code of Hero. For me, Dinobot's death was a gut-punch, but also the best and only way to end the character's journey. It wasn't death for the sake of itself, it was true sacrifice and death really having a meaning.

Beast Wars is the best Transformers show in my opinion. The animation was great, I enjoyed the fight scenes, solid voice acting and the character models were well done.

Yes, both Beast Wars and beast machines. The animation use to look a million times better back down. My memories give it better animation then re-watching these clips. But it was the best animation in an animated show at the time and looked beautiful back then. The stories and plots and characters as well as action and transformations and such.

I grew up with G1 and seeing G1 characters animated for the first time in cgi for Beast Wars was amazing for that time.

What's insane is that the writers didn't really know anything about G1. They got close to hitting on some OG lore and got feedback sounding a lot like your comment and then started purposely making those bad @$$ tie-ins! I love how they were all smaller than the G1 guys and they mentioned how tough they were, issuing the best line, "Die-cast. It's a lost art." A total nod to how the toys were all smaller and made of cheaper plastic. Too bad they had to follow up with Beast Machines.

Yes, the Agenda episodes is really badass, especially when it ended with Ravage declaring 'Decepticon forever!' and transformed into a cassette with the classic transformation sound.

A side effects of having to keep the cast small was you ended up with more character development. One of my favourite lines from any show is still when Megatron goes on one of his expository monologues and Blackarachnia asks why he always talks to himself, and he responds with "Uh, I simply have a penchant for intelligent conversation"

Beast Wars is still my favorite Transformers series ( sorry G1, I grew up with you & I love ya but omg Beast Was is so goooood ), and 2 of my favorite characters in it were voiced by Scott McNeil ( Dinobot & Silverbolt ). Really wish we could get a Beast Wars game on par with War For Cybertron & Fall of Cybertron....

The best part about it, was that rather than changing everyone. They changes a few people on each team. Which showed how war can dynamically change with just a few enhanced soldiers. The power would constantly shift back and forth as the show progressed, that was my favorite part of the show

Yeah, the dragon Megatron had like four different modes to transform into. It was my favorite for a long time. I always wanted a Depth Charge, but I could never find one.

Growing up in L.A. 12 year old me in '97 learned to set up a recording timer on VHS, since the show came on at 9am, after i left for school. Years later the show came out on FOX Kids in the afternoon, and the more brutal scenes and some dialogue/sound effects were censored or edited out. Still own the original 2003 Rhinomation DVD's.

I could go on and on about forgotten gems from the 80’s-90’s. Inhumanoids, silver hawk, M.A.S.K., the littles, skeleton warriors, air raiders, robotex, brave star ranger, COPS, visionaries, and a lot more I’d like to see back stories on. I must say if you’ve never seen inhumanoids, go find a source to watch it. That show was very dark and wouldn’t fly on regular TV today.

I already knew most of this. Beast Wars is one of my all-time favorite shows from that era. They could've gone with some bland, generic thing built solely for selling the toys, but they really went the extra mile in terms of storytelling and characterization. The story took off near the end of Season 1, and just kept building on it. Aside from the early episodic stuff, there were real consequences, character development, intrigue, etc. And yeah, Dinobot is still the best character on the show.

Without question, dispute or doubt, Dinobot was one of the greatest animated television show characters EVER! If ANY animated character (outside the classics like Batman or Speed Racer etc.) ever deserved its own video to explore the greatness of complexity and depth of the character, it’s Dinobot!!

I remember my family having a yard sale when I was 10ish. I sold some of my old stuff and used the money to buy the dragon megatron for my friend for her birthday. I got the tigerhawk one for myself. We were so stoked on Beast Wars but also liked ReBoot, DBZ, and the Toonami lineup. Just a couple geeky girls in the late 90's, early 00's.

Given all the references, I really hope they do a episode on Reboot. I'm 34 so Beast Wars and Reboot were shows I saw as a kid after school. I remember Reboot fondly. I loved how it had episodes referencing other pop culture stuff. For some reason an episode referencing the movie Army of Darkness always sticks with me lol.

What makes Beast Wars so amazing is the fact that they started this show with NO knowledge of G1 transformers. You can see this as you progress from SS1 to SS2, when they started getting more and more involved with the fans of the show and those who loved G1. So by then they dug in and did more research, and that is how we have the most badass sequale to g1 Transformers to ever exist.

Yup, Beast Machines was a really underrated show... wait, Beast Wars? The highly celebrated Beast Wars that even now you'll get called a "geewunner" if you point out any of its non-technical flaws? XD Beast Machines did a lot wrong, but it did NOT do everything wrong. In fact, it did many things RIGHT yet it is still badly underrated. I know this because, back in the mid-to-late 2000's, I blew $40 USD I really shouldn't have on the Kid Rhino DVD box set of Beast Machines, just so I could argue how bad it was in some thread over on the Allspark. XD The thing is, in doing so I finally saw all the good things I'd been ignoring, and it greatly elevated my opinion of Beast Machines. It also cemented my hatred of Botanica, and the series ending too soon because we did NOT get enough time with Obsidian and Strika.

Fun fact: Whenever Scott McNeil's characters on this show were having conversations between themselves, he recorded those conversations in real time if at all possible. You can see it in Rattrap's and Dinobot's interactions especially; one of them is always silent whenever the other speaks, the only exception I can name being their synchronized "SHUT UP!" to Tarantulas.

Reboot was awesome and deserves another look because it's essentially the lives of AI. And let's not forget Dinobot's Shakespearean monologues...in a kid's show. Just gold.

I literally remember reading Hamlet in High School and wondering why all the lines sounded so familiar. I didn't make the connection to Beast Wars until I learned how to torrent old shows to re-watch them lol.

Titled Beasties: Transformers in Canada. I remembered a friend arguing with me about it being called Beast Wars.... Some channels like YTV called it that to be more kid friendly. Reboot was brilliant! Although the newer remake is really bad.

I came here to comment just this. It was funny, as in the show, they called it 'the beast wars' anyways, etc. I am trying to remember, about the toys here.. were they labeled beasties? or beast wars? (as canada generally has its own packaging to have the eng/french)

How could anyone hate the stainless steel rat? Not only was he literally the only bot on either side that Tarantulous never got the best of, but put him in the same room with Dinobot, and it was pure comedy gold.

Beast Wars is the soul reason I got into transformers at all. I didnt know much of anything transformers related before this other than robots disguised as vehicles...when Beast Wars came out like most of us I caught this and Dragonball Z before school and then the insane amount of money my dad spent on Beast Wars toys and the hours upon hours of fun I had playing with them...man this brought back a lot of great child hood memories I neede to brighten up my year...Thank you!

Story, voice acting and nostalgia was the best in beast wars. I remember watching the first episode and couldn't help comparing the similarities between the original G1 transformers and BW. The animation was phenomenal and, imo, still holds up today. The death of Dinobot was the first time I ever cried to a cartoon. Still brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.

The red and blue variants were exclusively to certain retailers. So depending where you shopped determined the color of rattrap available.

There's a reason why it's called Beasties in certain areas. It's because considering war in certain kids cartoon is kindna taboo for kids to watch especially with war so in the title. Kindna stupid and weird I know but that's how it was.

@@johnny5guns Probably because some ridiculous 90s Censorship board didn't want them to have the word "War" in the title. It's the same reason that Kingpin threatens to "destroy" instead of kill Spider-man all the time in Spider-man TAS, and why Uncle Ben is "gone" and not just dead.

@@lilyluck884 Not as weird as the edits made in the Japanese dub of the series. In what has to be some hilarious irony, they straight up 4Kids the shit out of Beast Wars (and any other Western-made Transformers TV show pre-Michael Bay), even serious episodes like Code of Hero. Also, the Japanese writers for the dub were sexist as hell, to the point of changing Airazor into a male character named Hayabusa, because, you know, action girls may scar impressionable kid eyes. This, of course, made things even more awkward for them when the whole Tigertron/Airazor romance blossomed, and took them some hoop jumping to work with as well. Basically, the Japanese version of Beast Wars, and generally Transformers, is kind of a mess, seeing as they generally see the franchise more for younger children there. However, the one thing they consistently do right is their opening theme songs, especially Transformers EVO for the 2007 series. Let's... let's just let JAM Project do all the Transformer OP themes from now on... I think I'm getting off-topic, so I'll shut up now.

Rhinox was the coolest. I loved how he was probably the most chill and down to earth guy but he also didn't take no stuff. He wouldn't let the youngbloods working under him get a swole head and I remember him handily whooping Megatron on occasion.

Loved beast wars as a kid and i refuse to watch it as an adult because I want those memories to stay pure I went back and rewatched re:boot while it is still a good show it is amazing how much technology has evolved since then

Beast Wars is so well written and the characters are well defined that you get used to the low-tech they had at the time. Beast Machines on the other hand, is rougher to watch even though it has better everything--except for the writing, which is....rough.

Beast Wars really does hold up. Some of the "Predacon Plot of the Week" episodes in the first Season get a little boring on re-watch as an adult, but once you get into the actual serialized storylines it's just as good as it was when you were 10.

I havent watched this show since the early 2000s, so thank you for reminding me that it still exists! Now Im definitely going to watch the 3 seasons because when I had originally watched the show as a kid, for some reason the episodes were out of order? Excellent review btw!
