Beastie Boys Explain Why They're Different Than Brett Kavanaugh (HBO)

When the Beastie Boys burst onto the scene in 1986, the three nasally white-boy rappers from New York City had only recently abandoned a sputtering career in punk rock. But when founding-member Adam Yauch died in 2012, the Beastie Boys were finished. Now, almost a decade after their last record, they decided it was time to tell their story, with The Beastie Boys Book.
Their debut hip-hop album, “License to Ill,” went on to sell 10 million copies worldwide, celebrated by drunken frat boys convinced their partying rights were being infringed. And they played to stereotype.
But the Beastie Boys would change with the times-and apologize for the past-while becoming one of the most successful rap groups of all time.
Their new book hopes to answer all questions of growing up and ownership of past mistakes - including those of Brett Kavanaugh and Russell Simmons.

Not trying to be something they were not was one key to their success. Example: Vanilla Ice was basically run out of the game because he was perceived to be fake or acting hard when he wasn't, not acting himself and what we call "culture appropriation" these days. The BB's were themselves; punk,rap, brooklyn street boys who came up at the right time and were getting away with sampling and also riding the gray areas between rock,rap and punk. Mass appeal. Not just some white guys were trying to make a buck rapping.

I wish Yauch was here to speak on this. To me, he represented the fullest example of maturing, from the young tough guy macho sexist persona, to a wise hip-hop guru who rejected division and discrimination, and aimed to spread peace wherever he was. RIP MCA

I get it considering both their time as a punk group and liscence to ill were supposed to be tounge in cheek jokes but gained alot of support. It could be argued that the beastie boys were comedians whose joke kinda changed their lives Edit:for reference the beastie boys started by band members of "the young aborigines" swapping instrument, later their hip hop breakthrough "cookie puss" happens because the original is a prank phone call over a beat, they would rap over it when playing live. When talking about license to ill the drummer Kate Schellnbech who was the drummer until that album said that she loved the album and that is was funny but the crowds they drew at the time weren't in on the joke

Beastie Boys were such a positive influence on me. I was 10 when License To Ill came out and I was obsessed with them, and as grew into my teens I was falling into that “frat boy” bullshit routine that they were known so well for. But, when Check Your Head came out, it was then that my whole life took a complete 180•. Everything they did was the epitome of cool, so as they grew and changed, I looked up to them so much, I did too. They showed me what true artistic integrity is, and that you don’t have waver to the lowest common denominator to be successful. I’ll always be indebted to them for everything they did for me, they made me a better person. There’s one word that sums up perfectly how I feel towards them...”it’s called gratitude...and that’s right!”. R.I.P. Yauch(mca)

Been a fan of these guys some 30-odd years... They talk about ACCOUNTABILITY, and how it seems that the teaching of responsibility and accountability is in decline, and it is incumbent upon us to remedy this "atrophy of civility," now! I miss MCA so damn much... I am very happy that Mike and Adam are both still very active with the band as well as their chosen personal projects. Time to go kick it, ROOT DOWN!

I miss my old friend Yauch so intensely even now. Sorry, but I just saw this interview - four months late or whatever. He was the kind of kid you know is going somewhere, long before there is an objective reason to think so. I am glad he had the opportunity to do so much living so early - we never know when our bodies will change everything for us. Thanks to Adam and Michael for their stories and their continuing creativity.

These guys are so relevant today. They made a huge impact on the music industry and rap. They are rap but not the rap that was then or now but their own. My oldest boy knows the Beastie Boys music. I would say that those that like good music go and search it out and listen to it if it is now, 10 years ago, 20 years ago or 30 years ago. Music that has made an impact stays around.

Grieving like I have in the past, therapists have told me, whenever someone brings up an individual or individuals I've lost, I either change the subject real quick, or I kinda make light of it in a joking manner, I can tell by listening to them when Adam Yauch was mentioned, they made light of it... You can tell Yauch's passing still effects them

Beastie boys did some really dumb, teenager shit. The difference is they actually owned up to their mistakes and didn’t shirk accountability. Brett deflected and did some of the worst melodramatic acting. In our society, one would expect the reverse behavior from those two entities. We all do dumb stuff, but not owning up to it only makes it worse.

This video isn't about innocent or guilty, it's just an example of a group of people growing from one position to another. How is that a bad thing? We need to be having those discussions. What a waste of an amazing opportunity. I feel Vice has created this arc of the beastie boys. I thought they where a cleaver band poking fun at frat boys and used subversion and their talent to create some great songs. I feel the interviewer missed the point in the introduction - happy he mentioned on some lesser known stuff but nothing special. For Vice a huge let down

Got into a talk yesterday with the youth leader of the national Democratic Party for Tibet, where I had mentioned what represents the Tibetan cause for people of my generation, HH the Dalai Lama to the wonderful and compassionate Tibetans and largely Buddhist around the world. Then it appears your name as a band, MCA as a music media leader that got to enlighten the youth with the Tibetan issue. The kid was hardly turning into his late 20's. I had founded quite reassuring that the younger Tibetan generations still remember your name as a great musical and political influences so far. So I just wanted to thank you for the influence, the cultural heritage and the inspiration. Very best regards.

As a lifelong fan, I’m never sure I buy the whole “we were acting a stereotype” thing. I suspect it’s retro-fitting a narrative. I mean, they were kids, and like most at that age, they did some stupid/outrageous/regrettable shit in the name of fun, and then they grew up. Own it and move on, but don’t try to pretend you were acting the part of someone else and it wasn’t really you. Licenced to Ill was (and mostly still is) a fun album.

The book goes into detail to explain it was both. They started touring songs from LTI a year or so before it's release with run dmc, ll cool j, whodini, etc. Then when LTI broke they did two more back to back world tours, the second one with Run DMC again. Three years of doing a short set of what little songs you have at that point night after night. So it was fun to live it up at first, but then it became boring and they really were trying to perform a stereotype they created night after night with their manager breathing down their neck, and that got tiring. It's why they left Def Jam.

I have to disagree about kids now not caring about what rappers were around 30 years ago. First rap my son listened to was Beasties after he heard them in my car. Next thing a new he knew most of their albums from listening to them on his own. Paul’s Boutique is his favorite. He listens to new rappers I hate now, but we can always agree on listening to Beasties, Digital Underground, Led Zeppelin, Herbalizer, and Clutch.

It's true to an extent unfortunately, i wouldn't say nobody cares about the Beastie Boys anymore, people with good taste that know about them jam them. But a lot of younger people just care about new stuff.

I sensed a little fake modesty with the answer to that question. They definitely have a place in hip hop/music history. Lots of kids have a superficial taste in music but grow more open as they mature. If that wasn't the case, nobody would care about a book written by some forgotten group from the 80s.
