This review might come off harsh to some people who are into the line, but it absolutely addresses the criticisms I find in BotM. The articulation is great for range but it doesn't look fluid at all. The paint is sometimes too ambitious, and that reflects in the hodge-podgy layering. A lot of people in the community definitely praise these and they are absolutely a big step for the community, but the love for it is most likely because we've had such a low bar for models let alone articulated ones.

Yeah, from a functional articulation standpoint, the ceratopsians are the best of the bunch, but feature even more garish paint than the tyrannosaurs. I even LIKE the more outlandish designs myself, but it's clear the factory struggles with making them blend naturally. I keep telling myself to go all in on these Ceratopsian/Tyrannosaur/Cyberzoic Kickstarters - seriously, like, a figure of Suskityrannus? I know the person who found the fossil! But I always get one or two from each line, and find something off.

Dinosaur figures are some of my favorite to collect, even today, and it is refreshing to see an outside perspective on a figure like this. I find BotM overall to be very hit-or-miss, and while I've found some I really enjoy, you definitely hit the mark on a lot of my own criticisms for the line. The narrow jaw gape and lack of downward neck movement still baffle me! Mattel's Hammond Collection tends to run circles around BotM articulation-wise, and part of me hopes Creative Beast Studios could learn from them. Anyway, good review, happy to see you stick to your guns.

As someone who likes getting accurate dinosaur figures, I'm saying this in a nice way. Absolute heresy having the wrists of the figure pronated for the whole video. It's okay for a Jurassic Park/World toy, but not for something that's going for more accuracy. I know the wrists can pronate on the figure, but they couldn't be pronated on the real animal. For a dinosaur to pronate their wrists, they'd have to break them first.

I do buy dinosaur figures (when I think they are good). I have learned thru experience that articulated dinosaurs that have body parts that are accurate to scale are a nightmare to stand on a shelf. My recommendation is an almost fix figure (except for the articulated jaw and bendy wire tail). The latest figures from Nanmu and Rebor are the best in my opinion

As someone who does collect the current Mattel line and these, I will say the Mattel is really inconsistent quality-wise. The paint is almost uniformly bad with minimal and inconsistent apps, often times stopping before the tail. No paint on most claws too. Lately, they've been doing less paint, likely as a cost-cutting measure. Their "collector" line, Hammond Collection, has wildly inaccurate sculpts more often than not. Their general line is even worse. Yes, Mattel's stuff, even their collector line, are much cheaper. But, you do get what you pay for. And for a company as large as Mattel, there's really no excuse for how many corners they seem to cut on their figures. Only recently have they made a concerted effort to improve their collector line after a few years of harsh criticism. And even then, they continue to fall short with silly gimmicks no one asked for and/or inaccurate sculpts with minimal paint. I think BotM are doing some great work with plenty of room for improvement. The note about the articulated tail I think is bit silly though because bendy wire anything tend to wear down and degrade over time. Does it look better right out of package? Probably. Will it look just as nice a few years down the road when the rubber wears down and the wire starts to poke/pierce the sculpt? Probably not.

@@rageagainstthewashingmachi2877You could argue why this figure is worth $90 but a significant difference in size (regardless of being the same scale) should factor into how much is being charged. The Sh figuarts Kaido does not cost the same as Sanji. For marvel legends, build up figures for regular releases are sold at a "deluxe" price point. I did see the new kickstarter from this company and it looks pretty good but $90 seems a bit too much for this particular figure. On the other hand, the Hammond Collection T-Rex looks very nice to me and it's almost half the price.

I picked up the Tyrannosaurus from the Hammond collection, and the Dreadnoughtus from Jurassic World. I don’t think you stop thinking dinosaurs are cool just cause you grow up. That’s the same thing as anyone asking us why we’re still into action figures as adults. These figures might not make sense to people who aren't familiar with the dinosaur action figure landscape. Other figures, like the Jurassic Park toy line, are just movie monsters loosely based on dinosaurs. If someone thinks this figure doesn't look like what they expect it look like, is because their expectations are based on movie monsters, not actual dinosaurs. Beasts of the Mesozoic figures are scientifically accurate. On top of it, they can be posed, granted maybe not as much as one would like, however other scientifically accurate dinosaur figures are just statues with zero articulation; maybe the jaws move on them but that's it. These figures are awesome compared to other offerings. The sweet spot for these BoTM figures is the roughly $50 ballpark ceratopsian line.
@BakoZoltan
@BakoZoltan 9 ай бұрын
I forgot to mention the other factor which is, that in the 50 dollar price range other manufacturers' such as Papo, Collecta, PNSO, figures have zero articulation compared to the similarly priced BotM figures. It's a no-brainer which is a better value.

I’m an adult who collects dinosaurs and my expectations aren’t very different from other collectors. I own one of the ceratopsian figures from this line and it’s awesome, but I just can’t justify the prices on these tyrannosaurs. People heap tons and tons of praise on this line because they’re scientifically accurate, and also because there really isn’t any other options for us for accurate dinosaur action figures. The designs are very pretty but the articulation is just terrible. David Silva used to make statues and resin kits before moving onto action figures, and his strengths translate way better to static art pieces.

I feel like this review is exceptionally harsh given IMO, these figures are easily on par with the likes of MonsterArts and Hiya Toys, including negatives. Overpriced? No, not really given the size and comparing it to any of the standard MonsterArts releases. Then when it comes to paint issues, they are miniscule compared to many of Bandais offerings. Lastly the remark about the eyes not looking amazing when again, I haven't seen any company that makes articulated creature figures do a particularly great job either. They are almost always off or painted questionably. TLDR: I have bought many MonsterArts figures and have grabbed a few of these and I like monsters more than dinosaurs, but I'd pick these over most other companies releasing similar figures.

I’m a collector of these figures too, and this video is *definitely* too harsh. Sure there are some bad figures like the 18 inch torosaurus and trike having little to no working articulation and the horrible Utah having arms falling off, barely any free will to run with the legs, and messy coloring, but if you get some good ones like my first buy from them, the absolutely insanely detailed and awesome-colored alectrosaurus, you will have a really fun time. And yes they are a company that started from kickstarter, so obviously they will not have the best things all the time, their factory in china really isn’t that good- but it’s all they can get for now so they do have to make the figures a bit expensive… people always forget how hard it is to make detailed action figures

While it's fair to dislike the style of the paint job, it's unfair to extend that dislike to criticisms of quality. As someone who also customizes figures, I've looked into the process that's been posted on social media for BOTM. These figures are meant to have a handpainted look to them. It was a conscious decision to not use air brushes, because that's not what the creator was going for. All blending is therefore either washes or dry brushing. Personally, I like the look and the complexity of the patterns, though I can see why it's not for everyone. Also, as a side note, usually the painted prototypes were finalized before the artist was hired to paint the box art, not the other way around.

@@AnthonysCustoms I'm a professional artist. I have a few BOTM figures that I use as art references for creature design and while I think it's fair to critique the paint applications on some of earlier figures, I actually have that particular figure so I've seen it's paint app in hand under better lighting. I'm actually super picky about paint on figures, even ones bought for a more utilitarian purpose in mind. It's one of the few that I haven't picked up a brush to tweak it to match the release image. It's designed to look like that and the application on the Lythronax matches the design. When you factor in the sculpt, the engineering of the articulation, the commission of the illustration, and the increasing expense of complex paint applications, the fact that this is all being done by a very small indie studio is pretty impressive. If you don't like the figure, that's fine and you absolutely should say so. But it seems pretty unfair, especially to a small indie company, to call that figure's paint objectively bad. The paint is actually considered a selling point by the fans of the series. It's a decent paint, (except for the base, I do agree there). If the price bothers you, that's unfortunately the "indie tax". The price of an independent studio putting something this impressive out.

I just hope on the future the BOTM line improves on articulation, since they’re soon to sell replacement feet/necks for this body type. Right now their main focus is on the Cyberzoic line (think Dino-Riders, with dragons included).

I'm glad that a reviewer is finally digging into the garish paint apps and poorlooking articulation of the line. There are a decent amount of adult toy collectors into dinosaurs, Mattel's Hammond Collection line is mostly targeted towards adults, and Silva just had his forth successful Kickstarter for dinosaurs, but there really is very little competition in the market. Mattel's toys have bad sculpts and are movie monsters, while Creative Beasts Studios has some very accurate sculpts, so most reviewers handle the BOTM line with kid gloves since it is basically the only option we have for articulated scientifically accurate dinosaurs. My one disagreement with you is that the whole tail should be bendy. Bendy wire doesn't have a place in adult collectibles.
@AnthonysCustoms

@@AnthonysCustoms sorry dude, but that's a terrible opinion. Bendy wires break and bendy wires rot. The Amber collection raptors are less than a decade old and the tails are practically worthless. I have never stopped being into dinosaurs and may go broke because of it, also I have a yuty and two small triceratops from this line. as far as the paint goes, I do agree that there are some glaring issues. the yuty i got was practically shedding paint chips when I unboxed it. i managed to get the tails on without heating it, but have trouble standing up my yuty. I've been watching the line for a while now and do agree that the price is just a bit too steep. the cyberzoic line does seem to be an improvement from what I've seen, but I'd definitely wait if any new buyers are on the fence.

As a kid, I loved dinosaurs... I still do. I can see a market for those still enjoying it. The Mattel's Hammond Collection T-Rex looks leagues ahead better than this and it is less expensive... and it is bigger! Sure, the eyes aren't the best but it is the closest to the "puppet/animatronic" used in the 1993 classic at an "affordable" retail price. I don't have it because it does take a lot of space so imagine the Brachiosaurus with the elongated neck. I understand that "indies" are trying to break in... but first impressions exist for a reason. If it was 45 or 50 dollars (Canadian), I would be like "Good, I can get a good dinosaur and paint it if I want to". But this is not it.

Lythronax and T-rex are two different species of tyrannosaurs, with a massive size difference between each. The actual T-rex from Beasts of the Mesozoic is what you want to compare, although, Hammond Collection and BOTM are meant for two different collectors, as BOTM is scientifically accurate while the Hammond Collection is no.

This review shows exactly WHY I didn't go all-in with the whole articulated dinos from Beasts Of The Mesozoic. You are better off with a Nanmu or Rebor model (Better paint, Better overall look, admittingly with zero articulation maybe except for a moving jaw). To recommend are : REBOR Smilodon (all 5 versions including a BBTS one), REBOR Deinosuchus and Sarcosuchus (2 versions of each), NANMU Tyrannosaurus Rex The Blackrock Tyrant Deluxe Edition (and the 2 other versions).🐅🐊🦖

Problem is, those are all statues. Some of us get bored of static statues, and rather have one figure that can achieve multiple poses, instead of collecting a bunch of statues of the same species, leading to a cluttered collection that makes one look like a hoarder who has no restraints on their expendable spending budget.

The price does feel a bit too steep in someways. I got the trex version and it is slightly hit and miss. Some of the details and parts of the paintjob really impressed me. More than any sh monsterarts at a similar price range. It seems to have a really good shelf presence too. That being said the display stand is underwhelming. The articulation felt a bit more limited than I would like and some painted areas were not great. The Lythronax clearly has a ambitious paintjob but with this particular dinosaur the flaws are more noticeable.
