Many does not grasp how extremely almost impossibly hard to climb to the top in the world of table tennis. Upwards of 2000 - 5000 kids compete for ONE spot on the national team in training camps across China. In order to get into those camps you need to be at least among the top players in local clubs across 23 provinces in China. There are at least hundreds of those local clubs in each provinces. After being the top players in a club, you get a chance at one of those training camps. You need to compete with thousands of others for a chance at the national team. Let’s say you got that chance, there is no guarantee that you can ever represent China as you would need to consistently be in the top to play for China. Even when you are in the top, whom presumably are all from China, you need to be the best of the best of the best to even think about competing in the olympics or world championships. If you are 1 in a million in China, there are exactly 1400 people just like you.

It's not like every Chinese person is a secret kung-fu master either...I found the average level at clubs wasn't even that high when i was there. The total amount of players just ensures their top players reach way higher levels
@minhnhat
@minhnhat Ай бұрын
@@aseq2 bruh I don't see the correlation between being a kung fu master and the average level of ping pong players from different country. There's more density of ping pong tables in China than anywhere else in the world so more exposure to the sport there which is why I would have expected more people knowing how to play. Just like there are more baseball field in the US than anywhere else in the world. Of course not everyone in the US has swung a bat but I'd expect more people to have done so in the US than in China.

Adam is a very good player. I'm not surprised that he didn't lose many games. But most of the people he played against in this video obviously don't play ping pong regularly. Most of them are merely trying to return the ball. Elementary school & middle school kids who play ping pong between classes regularly are better than his opponents in this video, although they may still not be good enough to beat Adam in a serious game. It'll probably be a good match if Adam plays against members of a middle school ping pong team.

This was not my experience. In 2005 I travelled to Xi'an and played in a park that had multiple tables. The worst player I faced was about a 1300 level. Most were 1700+ and just casual players. The "Pro" table players allowed me to play a few games and I got destroyed.

@xuchenglin6256
@xuchenglin6256 Ай бұрын
Yeah next time you should choose a local park with free pingpong tables there! You'll meet some weird grandpas/grandmas with incredible skills... and unique styles! (but don't panic you won't go broke if you play to 5 points, no pro plays there). But you are correct that people are just people! In China everyone have played pingpong, but not too many of them later become competitive. You just witnessed the WORST part of the Chinese sports system -- the pros are too faraway from the people. It has its historical reasons that back then all sports -- Pingpong included -- are not meant for people. It's only for the pros to compete in the international games for "the glory of the country", and for the rest of us to watch them on TV and shed tears of "how great our country is". Well how you become a pro??? The pros are selected at a very young age and were sent into special "athletic schools" to be trained to be an national athlete... It's a national funded pyramidal system that works from county to city to province to nation level. Once you are in, you'll be cut from the outside of the world, you'll get paid as if you have a job (don't know if it's still the case now at lower level). You won't see them in your local "normal" schools because they are not in it. They train 24*7 and don't worry about exams. They don't worry about going to high school or university. You don't see them and they don't see you. It's very unlikely in China that your buddy who is the 1st place in your school that will still be let's say top3 or top5 in your regional meet. Because that's the only time you'll notice that these "athletic school" guys/gals exists... They will smoke you and make you feel like a joke... So what's the point of being competitive if you are already not in the system and are guaranteed to lose??? During our adolescent years me and my buddies spend huge time playing Pingpong, basketball and all kinds of sports, but no one has ever think about being competitive or get a coach or even deliberately practice some skills. We just play for fun. I believe that's the case all over the country. In China the pros don't arise from general populations, they are in a parallel system. They don't work their way up in local club races. They don't have the brand exposure responsibility to sponsors, they don't need to get public attention to recruit students to coach to make a living. They are paid workers by the country who doesn't care about the outside. That's why even if China has the strongest Pingpong team, but the level of general population is not proportional to it. Now things are changing but the inertia of the old system is huge. Especially at the national level, for the number of medals, the old system works. Next time you should try challenge "the other system" and see how your money goes! I bet Xu Xin will know well how you will find that "the other system".

At my university in Germany, there were quite a lot of Chinese students. Two of them became good friends. None of those two plays table tennis (they prefer basketball), but once they told me about an annual Chinese tournament in town as they knew I had played competitively in my childhood. So I participated. There were around 30 players and, unfortunately, I played the later champion of that tournament. So I lost the first match and got to the b-round and won all matches then. I think, in total there were 4 to 6 players better than me of the 30. One of them was German as well. In order to that, I think it is simply a matter of numbers. China is a huge country with more than 1 billion people and table tennis is a relevant (not the only!) sport for them. So there are many great players, but also many poor players (like anywhere).

But from the perspective of table tennis, well.... I see this as an opportunity missed to do something else in China in addition to what he did,... go to a park where there are lots of tables outdoor and Chinese people of all ages playing every day. An exemple if the outdoor ping pong facility at Chaoyong Park in Beijing, about 20 tables at one spot with people playing all day long. That would be fun and will lead to great games with you, some grandpa and grandma would give you a hard time. The other thing that would be interesting is to go to a sport high school like the one that was next to the hotel where I stayed on about 10 of my 40 trips to china. I could see from my window teenagers playing at about 15 or 20 tables outside in the school yard, the caliber was very good if not great. Such videos would give us an insight into what kind of base there is for table tennis in China which leads to so much strength on the provincial and national teams.

Well, the average person still seemed a lot better than in America. I feel you would’ve gotten more competition if you played in the street like you did in New York. Thanks for the vid as always!

I like watching your videos. If you want to find someone who is good at table tennis in China, you can go to the park and play with those guys. Many of them are masters with special skills.

It would be very challenging for you to go to the park and look for the older people who play ping pong. Those people are the real OG ping pong players hiding in the world.
