If the group cannot make the arrangement come to life then the arrangement is wasted. I think Kevin taught them all at least the basics of Beatboxing, but I'm not sure if they've ever swapped parts in actual performances, the way they do semi often with the Bass part (where Scott takes it over for Matt). A better example is Citizen Queen, where their Beatboxer taught one of the other girls to totally take over, because she wanted a few singing parts where there was still a beat.

In your examples it sounds like you're doing subharmonics rather then vocal fry. It's a technique that basically mixes your voice and vocal fry together to get this cool sounding low note and it's a lot bigger and louder then vocal fry alone. Essentially you sing a note and the subharmonics will bring the note down an octave. When you do this technique if you listen carefully you can hear the original note hiding within the subharmonic note
@chrismartinez144
@chrismartinez144 4 жыл бұрын
yay someone else noticed. I wonder if in the beatboxing world the proper term for this is actually "fry"? I'm not sure but yeah in the singing world, fry is slightly different, and what Reck is doing we would call "subharmonics"

@gianlucaranucci_
@gianlucaranucci_ 4 жыл бұрын
The tecnique known as "subharmonic register" or "subharmonic singing" is actually made with M0 mechanism, so with vocal fry. In pulse register, the vocal folds are close but loose, and this lets the air popping through them. But there's another difference with modal voice, that is the vibration cycle: in M1 mechanism, the chords vibrate with a periodic cycle, while in vocal fry they touch each other twice and then they take a short recess; so, they vibrate with an aperiodic cycle. When this aperiodic behaviour become constantly accurate, the chords will produce two notes at the same time: a fundamental and a subharmonic (one octave lower than the first note). This two notes are compatible, and so their overtones add togheter, creating a fundamental with a very clear sound. A recent study has shown than in subharmonic singing the folds don't actually vibrate at different frequencies but with this constantly accurate aperiodic cycle. So, subharmonic singing is just a very accurate vocal fry. For this reason, I prefer calling it "strohbass", also to differentiate it from kargyraa, that is a subharmonic singing tecnique too where the vocal folds vibrate togheter with the false chords. So, I just wanted to tell you that Reck was right when he called it vocal fry.

No you see Avi has superpowers. His vocal fry is probably like an octave below that lmao

5:37 NOT VOCAL FRY. It's a real bass chest voice.

yeah, he has some insane lower registry range. Avi doesn't really use vocal fry or growl, he mainly uses chest. He might have gone to chest-fry at some point, but the tone is clearly coming from a chest. It's just so low that the frequencies might clash with the subtle amplification they do in studio.

@charliecampbell6851 4 жыл бұрын
The Real Sourc3 the amplification isn’t subtle. There’s a couple recordings of this off-mic and Avi is barely audible on his low b’s, which is fine. But remember he’s a normal low bass, so realistically he should only be able to pump out loud E’s or F’s.

Yeah it's not a vocal fry note. It's a chest voice B1. With a little bit of fry sound to it. But the fry sound is quiet and almost not noticeable, I'm actually surprised Reck even picked up on it. Anyway, for anyone confused, having a little bit of fry sound doesn't mean you're singing a fry note. Otherwise, um, notes like these would also be fry notes: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f5ddjM9mldSniGg.htmlm36s. Notice how you can hear some crackling on many of her sustained high notes? That's fry. Yet she's not singing a "fry note." It's possible to be singing a chest note and just have a fry effect/distortion in your voice. So, yes, it's indeed a *chest voice* B1 from Avi. Also, for the record, when Reck does his B1 (while impersonating Avi), he does what most singers would actually *not* call a "fry"; rather most (knowledgable) singers would call what Reck does a _subharmonic note._ Even when Reck is demonstrating fry in the beginning of the video after hearing Scott do it, Reck is actually doing a _subharmonic note._ It sounds different from what singers would normally call a _fry._ It's the same thing bass singer Geoff Castellucci does to sing many of his super low notes in his _a cappella_ group VoicePlay. For those who aren't familiar here are some other examples of subharmonic singing: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d7Fkf9CZsq65aKM.htmlm31s, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jrF8lLx4rbDTeoE.htmlm27s, and here David Kahn starts by doing a vocal fry note but then transitions into doing a subharmonic note: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nJNkmLx7q7GcZ40.htmlm55s. (I get that what Reck is doing may be called a "fry" in the beatboxing world, I'm just saying in the singing world that's not the term that's generally used for it among knowledgable singers.) Hope this comment was helpful and informative to someone.

@@charliecampbell6851, yeah his chest voice disconnects starting on his C#2s and hence all of his chest notes there and lower are not truly projectable.

I think it was a subharmonic note. Look up David Larson on YT and you will see. Geoff castalucci from voiceplay does it all the time.

Avi and Kevin worked closely together to make the entire rhythm section of Pentatonix; for a non-professional it's sometimes difficult when listening to distinguish exactly who is making what sound. The same is true now with Matt and Kevin. If Kevin was taking special care with his beatboxing in Avi's solo, that's not at all surprising, except in the sense that I don't know how you can tell when Kevin is taking special care - as far as I can tell, what Kevin does is always spot-on perfect.

It's great to find a beatboxer talking about Kevin's skills! It's not really something I understand except in a "this is something some people can do" sort of way so I am learning a lot. Also your English is awesome!
