You can do urushi with the brush (fuki and some other techniques) but 99% of them will require one (or more). What brushes you should buy? In this video I answer this question, and show most of types of brushes you could be interest in.
Where to buy brushes I show? Best place for start is Watanabe Shoten - they deliver world wide, and have nice selection : www.urushi-watanabe.net/en/ (not affiliated in any way).
Most pens I show are for sale, and the best way to buy them is to check out my Instagram and send me a message there. There are usually some pens stock and you can find them here : tamenuri.com/stock/

I'm Michael and I'm a fountain pen addict. I lacquer pens with urushi lacquer. I make fountain pens. On my channel, you will find tutorials, videos from my urushi workshop, presentation of techniques, tools and materials used in urushi craft. I am also showing pens lacquered by me and other artists. I review pens but mostly urushi and I focus on this aspect of a pen, not usual build, nibs and writing performance.
I am self-taught in this craft, most I know I do I learned from my own experience, trial and error. A lot of them. But also from Japanese books, and videos on urushi and other urushi artists.

YES ANOTHER VIDEO!!! Personally, I also use the method for cleaning Hake on my synthetic hair brushes and I've found that I can get around 5-12 uses on them. One thing that I do however is I don't like using turpentine anymore because of the health risks and so I dedicated each brush to a different color. Have you ever tried making your own brushes for urushi? I've made a few for Hakeme and ground layers out of goat hair from a much wider brush I took apart but I know you can buy horse hair from various violin maker supply stores. Another thing that is very easy to make yourself is an ashirai-kebo, I was also able to make a nice one from goat hair but I think I might try even softer hair, maybe from a makeup brush... Can't wait to see your next videos!!

Now i can use those western brushes much longer. Also asigned to colours/urushi types ;) Making brushes - I did some, but to be frank not worth for me. It’s a tool, and I need best I can use. One loose hair can ruin a layer. But I use makeup brushes too! ;) and many others, but I will talk about it in another video on powders, sprinkling etc. i make my own sprinklig tubes (fun-dutsu) as I sometimes need a lot of them and unusual grits ;) I make my own sieves too. But not the brushes now. Maybe one day ;) it’s an art of it’s own. I make my own tools for kawari-nuri as my techniques develop. I 3D print them, laser cut, carve. I repurpose many other tools for urushi too. For a asirai-kebo squirrel is good. Buy large squirrel brush (western style “mop”) and you can make 5 medium ashirai Leno out of it ;)

A new video from you is always a pleasant surprise. Thanks to you I took the leap and started working with urushi mid way through last year and have greatly enjoyed my experience (made substantially easier thanks to your video content). I definitely appreciated the comment you made about the western brushes only lasting 5 or so uses, I thought I was doing something wrong with my cleaning as it feels like I'm constantly buying brushes and haven't yet had the courage to use the hake brush I bought for fear of ruining such an expensive (comparatively speaking) brush with some really dumb mistake. Looking forward to those future videos you mentioned. For video ideas (if you need any and they're not already in the works), maybe a video on raden and rankaku from start to finish (sticking them to a pen securely, how to polish without sanding off etc.) and anything to do with maki-e (I personally have been struggling to get the process of okime right). It may be a wild dream of mine but hopefully someday when you feel ready and able you'll put together a full on instructional book for us poor westerners who want to learn the intricacies of urushi but can't read Japanese. Anyway, for now I'll just go back to rewatching all your videos several times a week as I experiment, and drooling all over your pen pictures on Instagram.

Very interesting is how Mr. Master Michał speaks about simple brushes of course in professional way. 👍🙂 PS. I use only brushes of rats fur from New York (po polskiemu =sierszczyzna szczurowa- gładko się rozprowadza) not only to clean up or make up 😉🤭 I wish I could work with Mr. Master Michał to find some inspiration for life because this all fountain pens are special, one of a kind like Art. Very good & amazing job . ✒🖋👏

Czy na pędzlach pisze,że są z sierści szczura? Czy to nie wzbudza odrazy przy używaniu takich pędzli do makijażu?

Can you show how to sharpen hake brush and when it is needed.? I bought a brush that is only half the length not full length hair. I can't find any video of how to sharpen. Thank you for your time.🙏😊
