Excitebike was one of the more popular games on the NES. It's no wonder Nintendo wanted to do more with the series, and the N64 was a great platform to try to show off how it could work in 3D. Does Excitebike 64 hold up though?

I can confirm that the track editor was insanely cool as a kid. I would make giant jumps followed by hairpin turns that loop back around, allowing you to jump straight to the later part of the course. Better yet, the other riders didn't have good enough AI to recognize the shortcuts, so my 6 year old brain could enjoying winning over and over

I built a lot of courses but I remember one where I made the game glitch. This map I made included a turn followed by lots of sharp W jumps. All of the AI racers have a sort of "path" they will follow during any race or map you make. In this particular course, the AI racer "Vicky Vickers" (I think) would make the turn as any other racer, would then take the jump and land on another one of the bumps. However, every single time she would land in this sharp face of the hill and then she would get shot up vertically into space. If I continued racing, by the next lap I would see her body and motorcycle land somewhere close to where she met her demise.

EB64 felt like a hidden gem at the time. The controls are tight and unique, similarly to what made Wave Race so special. The bike's steering and suspension felt well-tuned, elevating it above many other N64 racers.

Underrated game! This was all about learning how to handle the bike physics (you had a lot of control), once you got a good grip on this, the difficulty became trivial. Powersliding into corners is something I see missing here, that helps a lot. Great vid!

This was one of my favorite N64 games when it came out and I easily put close to like 100 hours on it. I defended it passionately to the degree I remember one Game Informer writer out of three giving it a mediocre score and I e-mailed him to tell him his opinion was dumb…and he responded telling me to shut up. Ah to be 13 again. Anyway I’m glad you liked this one, I want to play it again one day and relive it.

This was one of my favorite games, played it so much with my dad as a kid. It's really cool that you're doing this series because you get to discover some real gems, the N64 is definitely a system full of them. Also, the Excitebike Soccer wasn't my idea, but you can bet when I saw Rocket League get big, I wasn't at all surprised because I remembered Excitebike Soccer being so fun, and it seemed like it had a lot of the same energy.

Two things: First, a general advice for racing games. When taking a turn, the outside edge is slower and easier to make, while the inside edge is faster and more difficult to make. This is because you can start turning earlier, having a greater effect on the overall turn than the increased distance moving from the inside edge to the outside edge. This is the opposite of what you said as a common-sense fact at one point. Naturally, sliding or drifting mechanics in a game can complicate this relationship. Second, it was hilarious how every time you mentioned how slippery the game feels to control, the camera shows you making an impossibly tight turn and accidentally moving at a right angle to the track. That level of irony in editing is why I like this series.

Hey Thab, sorry to be this guy, especially if someone else pointed it out, but the rise of dirt along the edge of the track in turns are called 'berms'. I only do it to make sure you aren't passing along inaccurate information or potentially sounding like a moron in casual conversation with dirt bike enthusiasts! 😄 But seriously, I'm so glad you're doing this challenge and putting so much into it for KZfaq! That's the only way I can see your content. Watching full VODs on Twitch is not the same as watching live; hence the appreciation for edited and scripted N64 content! Thanks dude

I found the rest of the bikers' quotes on GameFAQs: "Jumpin'" Jim Rivers : "It's not whether you win or lose, it's about how high you can fly!" "Tricky" Ricky Stern: "Better have extra film in your camera 'cause it's showtime, baby!" Sarah "Sugar" Hill: "They call me Sugar, but it's winning that's sweet!" Bobby "Big Dog" Malone: "The Big Dog's bike is badder that his bark, so I let my riding do the talkin'." Nigel "The Duke" York: "Technique, discipline and control are the key, and I have all three!" Vicky "The Vixen" Steele: "I hope no one gets in my way, 'cause if they do, they're gonna be eatin' my exhaust." Time to go lie down, I'm in a 90s coma from how tubular that was

Damn, you didn't try the crazy Downhill mode. Also, you can knock off every racer by hitting their front wheel with your back wheel, just like in the old classic. There's nothing random about it. And finally, pushing down/left and down/right to steer your bike with butter smooth handling in sharp turns is something I was used to from Wave Race 64. All in all I love this game as one of the very best racers on the N64 with the big bonus of having so much fun and varied extra content. 10/10

Oh wow, I didn't know you can disable the "drones"! I used to LOVE this game. Its mechanics are quite complex for a racing game and it feels great once you master the tracks. Those back to back bumps you mentioned, for example: It's fun if you aim your bike's angle just right and land on the back of a bump and almost like slingshot through the indentation. You can make pretty tracks in the editor with the user tile you get to shape yourself. It's pretty limited but as you said, back in the day, it was a lot more impressive. The extras are also pretty cool. The desert is indeed endless. You can forget about the fires and go in one direction forever. And yeah, the Rocket League precursor! We also spent a lot of time just exploring the outdoor maps and doing tricks. The construction level is super interesting for that. You can land on the red beams, for example. Great game.

It's really unfortunate that even after playing this many N64 games, Thab still doesn't really understand racing games. No, they don't make you play the races again on each difficulty just to pad out the game, but because that's how racing works. A racing game has a limited number of courses that the player is expected to play over and over and over as they try to get better at the game, exactly like how in real racing drivers drive on the same tracks over and over and over as they try to become better race drivers. Do you think someone would be like "well, I've raced on Daytona once, time to retire!" No. Now, I get wanting more content in a game, and want a good number of tracks in a racing game for sure, but this one has a lot of it so that isn't an issue here. This isn't one of those games with two or three tracks, it has a whole lot of them. Anyway, other than that it's always impressive to see how good Thab is at games, he made this very difficult game look much easier than it is. Getting through the Hill Climb that quickly is particularly impressive.

oh boy I played the hell out of this game as a kid, mastered even, track editor was cool af, stunt course lets you see all the cool tricks, that was one of the few games I played without the stick, but with the D-pad instead, Z and L both worked as the turbo button, so it was more confy than the stick iIMO. also a little trick is to "do a wheelie" at the very tip of any ramp, basically pressing turbo and "down" at the same time at the very edge of any type of ramp, this will create a mini turbo that will make you jump farther. after learning the basic layout of each course, every jump you will preemptively turn the bike in the air for the next turn, it was cool man just believe me being a kid and having to wait for christmas or birthday for a new game made me appreciate this game, cool video brought up nostalgia memories
