Finding relief from fibromyalgia fatigue and brain fog is possible! A refresher and update based on Chapter 18 in The FibroManual: A Complete Fibromyalgia Treatment Guide for You and Your Doctor amzn.to/3Uql7wg
About me: I graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine and am board-certified in internal medicine. After developing fibromyalgia in medical school I was able to find integrative treatments that helped me feel much better. I have had fibromyalgia for about 15 years. The pain is certainly significant but I agree that it is nowhere near as debilitating as the brain fog and fatigue. I have not worked full time in about 14 years because of the fatigue and brain fog. I have only been able to do a bit of freelance work at home when I am feeling up to it. It has had a massive effect on our family income and my quality of life. I miss working. I can’t remember I slept through the night without waking either.

The fog and fatigue are what got me seeking treatment. I thought I had ADHD and that I only hit a level of job stress that made the symptoms show up. I went into primary care prepared to ask for an adderall trial or something but her screening questions revealed I was in pain unusual for my age and she referred me to rheum. Finally got a diagnosis that way. I thought my pain was just normal for adulthood and my level of activity!

Absolutely!!! I have lived with pain all my life. It is the fatigue that stopped me in my tracks. Then the fog came & completely turned my life upside down. I haven't work full-time since 2004 😢 That is really hard on a new marriage

Thank you so much for talking about this.I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to make it on my own. The fatigue and brain fog have always been the things that have made it impossible at times to work.

Thank you. This work is not new to me but your explanations are very clear, I will buy your book. I have had severe fibromyalgia (over 30 years), CPTSD, Autoimmune thyroid disease and a history of other a/u diseases. I am also hypermobile , I feel that this can be a precursor to myofacial problems and fibromyalgia. And yes, I believe in adrenal burnout.

Yes, I have pain, but it's not as bad as the fatigue. It's unrelenting.

Fatigue can be so brutal and overwhelming. It’s not something most conventionally trained doctors are good at treating , which further compounds the problem!

I am learning so much from this channel! I got diagnosed with Graves' Disease last May, and now my thyroid is stable on Methimazole, but I still feel terrible. Just got my fibromyalgia diagnosis a couple weeks ago. Everyone in my family is on the hypo side and I'm the only one with Graves'. Graves' also makes sense to me considering it feels like my nervous system is overactive as is, so why wouldn't my thryoid be too? lol. I also have autism + C-PTSD so I've been hypersensitive and have had this hyperactive sympathetic activation my entire life, but now it's so much worse. also edit oh my gosh i have ADHD and my meds have been so helpful!! I'm really glad I have a psychiatrist who seems to know about how all of my symptoms are connected.

I am so glad my channel is helpful! And that you have a good psychiatrist that understands the bigger picture. It can definitely take some time to regain hormonal balance with Graves’ disease.

Thank you! Have you had talks or maybe have information in your book about migraines and tinnitus? I have a history of migraines that became more frequent in 2022. Then, last month I started having ringing in my ears and about two weeks after that, I’ve had daily migraines with different patterns and some new symptoms. I’m under a doctor’s care, but I’m also looking for any information I can get my hands on. Thank you.

Hi Dr. Ginevra, I've been confused. There have been a lot of functional practitioners on social media who have said not to accept Fibromyalgia as a diagnosis. That it's just something doctors give when they can't figure out what's wrong with you. That fibromyalgia really means there's something else underlying going on causing the symptoms. Is it Fibromyalgia or is Fibromyalgia not a real disease in itself?

I've been in pain all my life. I got diagnosed at 33. Fog started on the 10th of this year. It flickered but it's here to stay now. NOTHING I've tried is helping so I'm reduced to looking up videos.

There are definitely ways to improve fog, but it is so hard to even think about it when you are super foggy! I encourage you ( or maybe ask a friend to help) read the chapter in my book about reducing fibro fog.

Right I constantly worry I’m getting dementia. And the fatigue is terrible. I force myself to go out and it helps but it’s still a struggle to do it. I read naltrexone can help w fatigued as well. I’m about to start that so I’m hoping so.

@Dr. Ginevra I’ve been told for 25 years I have FMS/CFS-ME/CFS. I’m 100% disabled and getting worse each day. I fear that if my medication that doesn’t work like it does on “normal” people, if taken away will leave me bed ridden. I’m almost there now but have windows of hours that I can do the basic of things not including normal “stuff”. Do you have a practice or know of any good doctors in Los Angeles or Ventura County that treat FMS/CFS?

There are a number of conditions with brain fog like long COVID and vestibular migraine. My friend had long COVID, I just got diagnosed with vestibular migraine, my sister has fibromyalgia and they do have similarities. I wonder if the causes are related at any level. I also get muscle tension and pain in specific spots on my body, especially where my ribs are, on one side. I wonder if that could relate in any way to fibromyalgia even though I don't have the constant body pain. I'm seeing an osteopath so I'll see if they can do anything about the rib pain and tension.
@DrGinevra
@DrGinevra 3 ай бұрын
Yes absolutely similarities, in my opinion the common factor is neuroinflammation due to glial cell activation.

I'm in BC and a clinic doctor gave it to me. He didn't know about it, but researched the clinical trials and prescribed it. Most doctors are willing to look something up, if you say it's something new that you'd like to try/experiment with and the 'clinical trials' are promising. Ask them to look at data (humbly) and a good number will at least be willing to give it a try- even reluctantly. Especially if you have tried the 'traditional medications' doctors recommend (lyrica, cymbalta, gabapentin). I wish you luck!

I can't give specific medical advice in this forum, but as I describe in the FibroManual trazodone can be useful for sleep improvement. And yes can have fibro without thyroid issues.
