It’s so funny how Dr. Grande is always so interesting to listen to but at the same time makes me fall asleep with his beautifully lulling voice. I can’t remember the number of times I have started one of his videos and then I am awakened with “Those are my thoughts on the case of . . .”. Oftentimes I have to restart the video over and over again and it can take me an hour to watch one 15-minute clip. I imagine his kids must have been sound asleep two lines into his readings of “Goodnight Moon”.

A note about the substance found in the victim's system: Mitragynine is simply one of the two active alkaloids found in kratom, the other being 7-hydroxymitragynine. I'm curious as to what exactly the M.E. meant by "toxic level" with regard to this substance. If it was intended to convey that it simply had an intoxicating effect on the victim, then that's one thing. It is certainly possible to overdo it with kratom and make yourself queasy, but in the clinical sense, it is no more toxic than cannabis, and not nearly as toxic as alcohol. I only mean to clarify that kratom is by no means a heavy or dangerous drug, and is legal in most states. If the victim had a truly toxic level of mitragynine in his system, he would have had to take an outrageously large dose. Moreover, the primary effects of mitragynine are counteracted by alcohol, which was also in his system. I am therefore not inclined to believe that the presence of kratom in the victim's bloodstream played any significant role even in the leadup to his death.

It certainly appeared to be a somewhat effective defense on her part, but perhaps not as effective as the Chewbacca defense.

This is nuts. A toxic relationship I was in found me with my hands around my partners throat but he did in fact grab my hands, place them on each side of his neck, and held his hands over the top of mine with force while screaming “just kill me!!” While I tried to open my fingers under the force of his hands to lessen the grip, I could not move my arms away as I was pushing out against his hands and didn’t have much strength in the back muscles of my arms. I broke out crying and was in a panic that I would kill him through his force. He eventually let go but that was one of the most terrifying moments of my life.
