I'll claim ignorance regarding Marillion. I only knew them from that hit song in the 80s that Jim mentioned in the video. I am stunned at how good that band is. That was NOT what i was expecting. Incredible musicianship...and the lead singer was outstanding. I love songs that challenge us to think. This one does just that. Great review Jim!

An outstanding song by one of the most brilliant bands I have ever heard. They deserve so much more appreciation from a wider audience, and I am so glad someone turned you on to them. I guess that's the curse of having had a radio friendly hit single all those years back - most people will just think that is all you are. With Marillion, nothing could be further from the truth.

I'm glad you are getting to rediscover this band..... brilliant track. And I for one think that H has the rare ability to make songs that are merely great, transcendent live. Being that you are in England, you HAVE to see them live ( something sadly I'll most likely never be able to. I had a near miss on the Misplaced Childhood tour when they opened for Rush...got to see BTO instead 😒). I like H better live than on record, and that's saying something. Nice reaction Jim .....

I was at this gig, at Marillion weekend in Holland, 2013. That was the first time I heard Gaza live (from the 2012 album Sounds That Can't Be Made), and what a performance - as you say it was really really rewarding. Actually every Marillion concerts is rewarding, it's an unexplainable experience, you just have to see it by your self. Last time I saw them live was 2x at Royal Albert Hall, Monday and Tuesday this week, and they opened with Gaza both nights. It was pure magic! For your next Marillion view, I will backup the suggestion of "The Space" live at The Royal Albert Hall.

There are many people who had an interest but no great affection for Marillion back during the era when Fish fronted the band. That era ended 30 years ago, yet many don't know that Fish's departure led to a new and better version of Marillion, one that has produced about 25 epic songs which are even better than Gaza. With the almost infinite amount of music available these days on the web, it is all too easy to never come back to a band after you've once decided they really were not worth following. I hope, for your sake, not mine, that you actually explore the current version of Marillion further.

Wow! Such an amazing review, Jim. You really capture the essence of the song from your first listen. I would definitely advise listening to it again away from the camera, which I am sure you will. Probably the most emotional piece of music I have heard. If you want to discover Marillion further, have a listen to The Space, live at the Royal Albert Hall, it will literally leave you speechless. OK, I am a fan of Marillion, but was never a fan of the album version of The space. This version recorded in 2017 is just mindblowing. You have to see it. They have taken on a 6 piece mini orchestra to enhance the track which just takes it to new heights. Please, if you get the chance, either on or off camera, just experience this track.

Oh I love this! Absolutely love it. Such a great song, I really like how they reflect the chaos of Gaza (apart from in their lyrics) in some of the musical parts, especially through rothery's guitar solos in the beginning of the song. Glad you like it Jim! And check out more! Don't know if you have been listening to any Marillion outside of the ones on your channel, but there are some more masterpieces waiting for you: the new kings, El dorado, the invisible man, interior lulu (!), this strange engine. Jim, thank you for acquiescing to my request. I instinctively knew that you would enjoy it, and react to it sensitively. It is fair to say that the band lost many of their fans over this track. Personally, I thought h pitched the lyrics perfectly (pardon the pun) and manages to capture the plight of the Palestinians perfectly, without making any political points. Marillion continue to surprise, and I am glad that that includes you. It was a pleasure.

Ah, I think my comment disappeared, probably because it had a link to Spotify in it. To summarise. You might be interested that Steve Hogarth's most recent podcast includes about 30 minutes on the lyric writing process for Gaza, which I think you'd find interesting. Since I can't include a link, try searching on "hogarth podcast corona diaries" and go to episode 42. Although the rest of the episode is more prosaic, it gives you an insight into the sort of guy he is - pretty thoughtful and grounded I'd say, and dedicated to his music, band and fans.

Wasn't a fan of early Marillion, always thought they were an early Genesis rip off, although Clutching at Staws was different. Much later Brave was released and wow, this is better. Since H took over vocals/lyrics, the band as really grown on me. I now think they are one of the best bands ever, sounding more like Pink Floyd now but better, yes, better than Floyd. Wonderful emotional vocals, great guitarist who has more variety than Gilmour, great keyboards, great bass, great drums, great music, what more could you want. Brave, Afraid of Sunlight, Marbles, Anorraknophobia, Sounds that Can't be made, FEAR, Season's End, brilliant just brilliant and their other albums aren't far behind. Real class act. Fifteen years ago they wouldn't make my top 10, now they're number 1.

In an interview Steve Hogarth said this song was from the perspective of a "child of a certain age". That made sense of some of the lyrics...it's a young teenage boy's (my thoughts) telling us what it is like for him to live like he does and not understanding the why's and the how comes...namely how come nobody comes to help them. A powerhouse of a song that moved me to tears in some sections because of the music/lyrics and Steve H's performance of this song. Great thoughts aand reactions on your part.

Thank you for doing another Marillion song. I have much to catch up with here on the channel, but I didn’t want to let this one go by. It’s not one I listen to a lot, so I was glad to look at it with fresh ears. ;) Check out Steve Rothery’s solo live album if you haven’t. Not as a reaction, but I think you’d like it. I wonder sometimes how H can put so much emotion into each performance and not end up exhausted and spent. He’s an “all in” kind of performer. Edit: Silly me. Try looking back through the post history before making suggestions. :). Ok - how about Pure Reason Revolution’s The Bright Ambassadors of Morning? They had 3 albums, with The Dark Third being a prog/electronic wonderful ride. Gorgeous harmonies and a lyric style from Jon Anderson’s school of Abstract Word Salad - good with a light vinaigrette.

You're right Jim about one key thing that no one has mentioned. Floor's voice is not forced like Tarja's is. I listen to lots of opera, and the most memorable ones don't sound forced. Floor's voice is rich and has depth, and power when it's needed to express the song and convey its meaning which is what touches so many people. She doesn't just sing it, she lives it, and in doing so, we live through that journey with her. Extremely difficult to do that, and I think is one of the prime differences between them also.

The Faceless - Autothiest Movement part 1 to 3 Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence disk two again maybe CCR- I Put A Spell on You (something a bit different)

Read somewhere years ago, Steve or band were thinking of calling the track both sides of the wire/ fence. am unsure if this is true.

Amazing example of why this band has to be seen live. This song has *so* much more power and emotion than the album version (which is no slouch). Rothers of course is fabulous as usual, but Pete Trewavas (bass) gets a good spotlight here as well. Hate to turn your focus from Marillion at all, but try the 'supergroup' Transatlantic that features Trewavas on bass. I'll let you discover who else is in that band (and the lovely rabbit-holes *that* will lead you down...)

It's great to have such a talented band of Marillions character take on a genocidal subject and share the complete failure of the rest of the world to stop this immediately . This was a situation brought on by British involvements then supported by the US to have a Satellite state of their own in the region to control oil reserves at the cost of thousands and thousands of human lives..

Or Sensing Working Overtime. Not an easy song to sing, notoriously difficult to get all of the words in...it's a very good version featuring XTC's Dave Gregory

@@jenphillips3212 no XTC are from my shit home town, they however, Diana Dores, Julian Clary and Billie Piper have escaped it. I am miles away happy in Scotland now.

H talk to a kid from Gaza was his story. The Hope foundation, which they are trying to raise money for the yrust. It's a music acadamy to bring palanstines amd Isrealion kids, but with new planing they are in trouble of losing even that.
