This song and Rosetta Stoned have always gone hand in hand for me. I truly think Rosetta is a direct response to this song. Third Eye expresses the teaching and healing aspects of psychedelics, while Rosetta Stoned seems to show that these drugs have other effects, especially when used irresponsibly. Maynard mentioned once in an interview that psychedelics are a great tool to jumpstart people on the right path, but for people not already making an effort to learn and to heal, the experience can be almost totally meaningless and absurd.

Tool are heavily inspired by the works of Tim Leary, Carl Jung, Phil Hine, and Alaister Crowley, if you really want to go deep into Tool's lyrics, you need to check that stuff out. Aenima follows the early progression of a peyote trip, the angst, fear and anger that build up in your stomach, bad 'spirits' so to say, and the subsequent 'purging' giving way to the breakthrough in Third Eye; the 'welcome back' from his ego-journey that is conscious existence (and the pain therein). Laturalus is the 'plateau', climaxing with the title track, and 10'000 days is coming back to 'Earth'. I still haven't listened to Fear Inoculum properly (saving it for when I'm in the mind-space to hear something 'new'), but I wouldn't be surprised if it represent the 'integration' of the transcendental experience in mundane life.. "Think for your self, question authority.."

I just love how Carey can build up a beat in a way that it jsut roles over you... you get pushed by it, rolled around, fell the energy of the song in you chest and you loose your orientation, what makes you vulnerable for all the other aspects of tool.. Maynards voice, the heavy Riffs..... it all just rushes down on top of you and you get carried away, surrounded by the perfection that these musicians bring you. Frking love it everytime i hear it

Shrouding all the ground around me Is a holy crow above me Black as holes within a memory And blue as our new second sun I stick my hand into his shadow And pick the pieces from the sand Which i attempt to reassemble To see just who i might have been I dont recognize the vessel But the eyes seem so familiar Like phosphorescent desert buttons Singing an old familar song Beautiful, truly beautiful imagery.

Above Björk and Motorpsycho, Tool and especially - especially - Aenima is _the_ Album for me. I remember listening to it, lying on the floor, eyes closed over and over and over again. It did hit the spot at the First listening. I am forever grateful to my guitarist and singer of that time in the 90s who recommended TOOL to me.

The movements in this song elevates it so much, it’s a symphonic journey. Which is what makes it one of my favorites. And the arrangement matches the subject matter perfectly.

"Think for yourself, Question Authority." Tool opened up many (if not all) of their shows from the Lateralus tour with a recording of Timothy Leary, and in the end, they put that quote there in a echo type loop. This song comes from Aenima, the album before Lateralus obviously, but being the last song on the album, it works as a perfect bridge between the more external and harsher sounds and themes of Aenima, to the more internal, matured sounds and themes off of Lateralus. You were spot on with your analysis in my opinion. Awesome review/reaction as always Jim! Also, between the KZfaq grind and a Baby...I feel you made a sound decision. by the by, if you find yourself wanting to do another song from Aenima, I made lyric videos for all the major songs from the album and put them together in a playlist. I would be absolutely honored to have one of my lyrics videos be a part of your reaction vid someday. :0) I'll leave a link below just in case you are interested. Either way I love your work and look forward to seeing more from you. kzfaq.info/sun/PL85GmvDTY4K34Y9bNSJqX08ugzAyKF_hX

Possibly the most symphonic Tool ever got with their writing. This could easily be mistaken for the prog-rock answer to Stravinsky. There are even echos of the Rite of Spring in this, especially those filthy augmented 4th chords around the 8:10 mark. Also known as, 'the devil's interval', historically.

Yea Danny won a drumming tournament a few years ago and was deemed the best drummer in the world with the drummer of dream theater in second if I remember correctly. He is truly amazing. I'm pretty proud of my drummer cause he can play almost every tool song ever. I don't know if Danny is still considered the best in the world but he's up there in the top five ever for sure.

20:15 The fact that a relatively mainstream hard rock/metal band in the mid-late 90s was using that quote is pretty mind-blowing, but the fact that a stand-up comic was using that line in his act is even more remarkable.

@RyanCogar5 жыл бұрын
Jim, always interested to see your reactions as you seem to do some of the more overlooked bands & have a genuinely natural musical reaction to them. My only request would be Karnivool - New Day (the studio version). It is what the people want! As a personal additional request though I would also throw Monuments out there as they are a very under appreciated/represented band in the metal reaction scene here on KZfaq. Their guitarist is an absolute riff machine & they have quite a unique sound overall. Remember Jim it's quality not quantity! Sending good vibes from Cardiff bud!
@JimNewstead5 жыл бұрын
Hey Ryan, thanks for the comment. Love me some Karnivool, Monuments? Ok, I'll get 'em added to the list! Cheers, Jim
@RyanCogar5 жыл бұрын
@@JimNewstead Greatly appreciate the reply Jim! Forgot to recommend a track for Monuments so thought i'd hop back with a little direction/suggestion. My pick would be "Mirror Image" off of their 3rd & most recent record although many regard their preceding record to be somewhat of a prog metal modern classic, so it's definitely worth digging more into their material. I will warn you that there is some "unclean/scream" vocals if you're not totally into that sort of thing but their vocalist is incredibly unique within the genre not to mention very versatile.
