I made a fake plank hardwood floor using plywood. It came out well. The rest of the house had parquet hardwood flooring so we custom cut the plywood into 6 inch planks to align with the old flooring and stained to match. We added some "random" cuts, and screwed and glued it all down with hidden break-off screws. It has performed ok for 6 years. While we used the best hardwood plywood at our local big box store, a few pieces of the flooring were missing an inner ply, and so after years of use, and abuse in a few spots the upper ply broke. If I were doing it again I would like to closely inspect the edges of each piece to avoid using those pieces. We did this in a kitchen, an area of the house where it has had lots of abuse. This type of flooring would perform better is a bedroom, office or living room. Places where there is less water, fewer falling cast iron frying pans, and less appliances to move. Dropping a frying pan will dent the flooring, in our case we consider that "added character." When the refrigerator leaked while we were one vacation, it discolored some portions of the flooring. I ran a dehumidifier for four months and dried out the flooring and while some areas are still darker and show water damaged, it is not that noticeable in the kitchen. About 50% of the water damaged discoloration came out as it dried. Hardwood floors are not ever meant to have water on them for a week or more, so the fact that this type of flooring survived that without major warping is a big win. (Cabinet shadows and lighting hide some of remaining stains, others just looks like a natural discoloration.) Life got busy so we only sealed our flooring once or twice. I love the look of your project; and now you embrace OSB for the beauty it has. It has been a couple of years now, have you had any issues with the upper layer of the OSB giving way, due to voids in the lower layers underneath it?
@BeauandKaraStudios

Thanks for the comment! Our OSB has shown no signs of separating or giving away. It's not a high traffic area so once it does start to separate or chip out, I'm excited to patch it up with some epoxy! :)

Goodness gracious! I watched it again. It looks so good. I was thinking, "How about a clear epoxy finish?" But, I think poly is more flexible and better suited for the finish.
@BeauandKaraStudios
@BeauandKaraStudios 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're right! And since it's a work floor, poly will be more easily fixable if there is a scratch. Also, much cheaper than epoxy! :)

Brown paint is a good choice. Evens out the fleck look. We used clear, but I may refinish in paint. It’s 15 years old and strong as hell with the right sealer.

Would you say this is spill proof? For example, if I put poly on my shed floor and I water animals in it, occassionally making spills, or desiring to mop?
@BeauandKaraStudios
@BeauandKaraStudios Жыл бұрын
Hello! It helps with cleanup as water beads up. But prolonged exposure to liquids will eventually soak in. Also, if water gets in the seams of the OSB, that would be problematic over time. It's a vague answer I know, but finishing the floor with poly can only help spills. Thanks!

hi, did you have any issues of the osb absorbing in areas. i finally switched to a wood floor poly to see if it helps, making a large desk L top. the normal poly just got sucked in like water. this is my first attempt with OSB, i have redone wood floors, different projects with sanded plywood like birch. never this type of issue.
@BeauandKaraStudios
@BeauandKaraStudios 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! I did have some areas that were more absorbent. We put several coats on until we had a uniform look to the floor. We sanded with 220 grit in-between each coat as well. I believe we put 3 coats on. I noticed that if the OSB is older or out in the sun for a while, it absorbs differently than newer OSB. Hope that helps!
@tonycali5446
@tonycali5446 3 жыл бұрын
@@BeauandKaraStudios it all worked out, 3 coats of floor poly, 3 coats of spray on glitter and final coat of epoxy and more glitter.. every coat my wife said "i think it needs more glitter". i never knew 6 year old 3/8 osb could absorb that much. good learning experience. because next project is also that age & dried out, 3/4 4x8 sheet prob will only suck up 2 gallons of poly, so epoxy wins thanks to your videos & music
