The Mid South gravel race in Stillwater, Oklahoma hosts a tremendous array of bikes and gear, from machines optimized for race performance to bikes built for all-day partying. I took a stroll around the expo to see what was new in 2024.

BMX races have always been confined to small manicured tracks, tho' to be sure the wild early days included a few downhill courses. BMX riding was always about riding everywhere and that definitely included gravel farm roads for me outside Fresno in '71 on my Schwinn Sting-Ray. And thanks, Ben, for visiting the display booths and showing us the completer at the start, cheers to him for finishing! 😀

Love this recap! Stellar content as always!!!! I'm still pumped from having attended this year's event as my first time. Was cool seeing Ben walking around in person! @12:54, at one point in the ride, I was riding along with this guy and a few of his mates. I can't believe I saw him wheelie down a steep, rocky stretch of road!!!!!!

I had a haro box bike as a kid. My brothers gave me a haro mountain bike for my wedding. Still have it 24 yrs later. Freaking loved both. Pumped for this bike.

Thank you. Those are Shimano S-Phyre Magnetic shades. 'Magnetic' in that the lenses pop on and off for easy swapping. Which is handy for travel. ride.shimano.com/collections/eyewear-all/products/ce-sphr2?variant=40014580711496

What do you think of the idea of making one size of carbon (or alloy) handlebar that comes apart like the Canyon bars that "fold" in order to pack down more compact? Could this not be the best way to make all handlebars that have integrated hoses? It seems to me that it would solve two problems: 1) packing the bike smaller and preventing breakage of the bars; 2) making the handle bar width infinitely adjustable, thereby reducing production and distribution costs.

If it could be done in a tidy way visually - and of course safely - then that could be a great solution. I was chatting with a Bicycling tech editor about how having an adjustable-length stem would theoretically be a similarly positive thing… but the chances of it being done in a way that doesn’t look big and clunky are low.

I already have the bike to do just that. With 1 disc brake at the front. I absolutely don’t have the level / skill / money to participate in a Gravel Race but at least I’m early on the GRAVLOCROSS thing 😎

I don't understand "gravel season opener"? Gravel season is 12 months of the year... I've already completed/competed in 5 gravel races this year. Gravel 24/7/365 Baby!!!

Looks like fun. ...But so many bad paint jobs and even badder moustaches, giving ‘the spirit of gravel’ a bad name. So...hipster grunge gravel is so 2024? …At least it’s not all about the boring podium!

It's interesting that you now have China innovating and manufacturing composites at scale, the stuff that wins races, and in the US you have all these niche businesses that basically rely on froth, community, form over substance, much less skill, much less tooling, but much more branding. It's a form of death. Spending a fortune on a custom paint job on a steel frame welded in a garage while wearing stupid jorts and a handlebar moustache vs composite aero stiff frames and German rubber compounds. At least they're not making tyres at home yet, using hemp or whatever.

These videos all seam to have way (way way) to much "face time", and no where near enough "product shot". Maybe in the future, give each face 5 seconds max, then spend minutes looking at the gear.
