I was trying so hard not to cry bc i'm very sentimental but every time i saw bryce cry i started bawling😭

That phrase to mourn the living really got to me and the movie showing the effects of substance abuse on the whole family was well done also timothee chalamet was deserving of a best supporting actor Oscar nom especially after getting recognition from other film awards this was a great reaction.

Not sure if anyone else in the comments mentioned it, but the girlfriend in college and the one he does drugs with are two different people. They do look alike, but the books clarify that the girl he meets out of the club is an old high school acquaintance that turned into a romantic relationship filled with drugs.

a parent's love for his or her child is insurmountable

The scene where Nic and Lauren break into his family house gutted me. My brother in law used to do the same thing back before he got clean. The last time, his mother and I caught him and he attacked us. He was arrested, of course, for like the seventh time in three years. But we dropped the charges. We just wanted him to get help. He has, and I hope more than anything this time sticks. Its been a long time, maybe 16 months I think, that he's been clean and sober. Every day I pray it stays that way.

I don't have children of my own, but I refer to my nephews as 'my beautiful boys' and this was a gut-wrenching watch. Drug addiction is such a horrible disorder, and it breaks my heart to think about any person going through that hell (no matter what age they might be, I always think, 'that's somebody's baby'). I also feel for their loved ones who are also affected so deeply by it.

the acting was so spot on, I saw my dad go through this for years and always being so defensive, timothe one of the best actors!!

Hands down one of the saddest but also eye opening films I ever watched. Felt emotionally and physically sick for days after. Lost my cousin too this so it really hits home.

this movie has always been a tough watch for me especially bc addiction has its parts in my family and i'm also very prone to it and i actually struggle with one thing in particular. the thing about how addiction is an every day battle is very real. there's always a voice in your head telling you to do it, every minute of every day to the point where you relapse just to keep it quiet (at least in my experience) and it's probably one of the scariest and most sickening things in the world, especially depending on what the addiction is. i think that they did an amazing job portraying it bc it truly does cause divides and arguments and it definitely gets to a point where nobody trusts you anymore. timothée and steve absolutely crushed it (and crushed my heart lol). also if anyone relates to this movie i *truly* hope you're doing okay ❤️🫂

My cousin wrote this book. We are so blessed that Nic survived. David sheff was the author. This is my first time seeing it with you. It’s too hard to see.

I've been working my way through timothée chalamet's filmography and I just watched this movie for the first time last week. as a recovering cannabis addict who was raised in an unstable and traumatic household with alcoholic parents, this movie hit me extremely close to home. I was gasping for air through my sobs watching it then, and the same thing happened watching your reaction just now. god, what a movie.

I knew/know a "beautiful boy". Last I heard of him he called me in the middle of the night scared out of his mind after a drug fueled mistake. I cried for days. This movie captures the "mourning of the living" perfectly.

I'm glad someone is finally reacting to this. This movie is so heavy, especially if you have any experience with loving an addict. For days after watching this the first time, I could FEEL the movie on me. I felt it on my heart, on my mind, on my skin, everything. I had never seen Steven Carrel in a drama prior to this and he did a great job of portraying the roller coaster of emotions you go through especially once you accept that there's nothing you can do to save them and you have to show tough love.

I had a close friend of mine die of an overdose at the end of 2022 - and the thing about it that is so gut wrenching and heartbreaking is that, consistently, throughout his life, he said he would never touch that hard shit. Because he knew it would end him. And it did. I can’t imagine having a child go through that experience, and knowing that loving them isn’t enough to stop it. Loving them can’t save them. I used to have a super critical outlook on addiction, but even though it’s complicated, that shit is absolutely a disease. It is never a choice. This movie is a brilliant narrative for the chaos of it, and the helplessness that it inherently brings

perks of being a wallflower is one of the best books about mental health, Stephen chbosky slays

37:00 The dad doesn’t say this, but one of the other reasons he can’t take Nic in (other than he has to stop enabling him) is because he needs to detox. Detox is super dangerous and non-professionals like Nic’s family would not be equipped to help him.

This movie is such an incredibly difficult watch but also so incredibly spot on with the details of drug addiction and addictive behaviors.

The book this is based on and Nic's book Tweak are both so good and heartwrenching. I read Tweak when I was in high school and Beautiful Boy when I was in college and its really amazing that through those books you can get the experience of being an addict and also the experience of loving an addict. Tough reads but also really valuable.

You should definitely check out “Bones and all” totally different film, but Timmy is great in it as well

My boyfriend suffers with addiction issues. His parents don’t know how bad it was at times and it wasn’t because they weren’t involved. We met at his worst he lived in my apartment building. He was able to hide it from all of us at times. Everyday is a struggle but he’s been clean and keeping a job for 2 years now ❤ Edit: Met 8 years ago have been dating for 4

This movie it's truly heartbreaking. Steve Carrell did such a good job at portraying the father and how much he cared and concerned about his son, I could put myself in the same place as the father and feel so helpless. Timothee did a very good job as well. For most of the movie, I couldn't help but feel sorry for him, putting myself in his shoes, not just the father, but I was mad at him for almost the entire movie, much more so in the last few moments of the movie about his actions. This film truly portrays how addiction destroys not only the individual, but also the family and even those who are just around. 10/10 for sure.

I worked with 18-25 years old with mental health/substance abuse problems and we watched this movie for one of our staff meetings. I remember being mesmerized by the performances and heartbroken at watching what the family went through. I remember one of the clinicians started to shut down during the movie and when I talked to him later he said it was very familiar for him because he grew up in Marin County and this was a lot of his friends. I ended up having to finish it on my own and just cried especially when David told Nic he wasn't going to help him. It's such a good movie and it really does a good job of showing the impact of addiction and mental health on everyone involved.

Bryce is such a sensitive sweet soul. 😢🖤 I dated an addict who was on meth for 10 years and I didn’t even find out he was using until I went into labor with our child. He got sober 6 months ago and has remained so. All you can do is hope they make it through another day without using. This movie is a great depiction. Especially mourning the living.

Even though I’ve seen this one before when Bryce started crying I did too😭 and then a few minutes later i was recovering and he pulled out his industrial size water bottle and I died laughing lmao

The girl who he find drugs with was NOT the gf from College. It was a gf from HS ( he was in SF) this movie was so heartbreaking. It was done so well. The acting was incredible V realistic. Chalamet & Carrell were impeccable. They were snubbed by Oscar. Chalamet was nominated by Golden Globes & other nominations He was nominated best supporting actor by Bafta. I lost my brother & it was so true you mourn before they die. BC they r not the same person u lost them. I like the both sides of the story. It was based on Beautiful Boy & Tweak Great job pick ! I picked this movie on a whim one night, and it has never left me. It's such a good film. I struggle with alcoholism. I had to go to the ER for acute organ failure and almost died. I still relapse, and when I do, I do it HARD. This movie hit way too close to home.

This is a very moving gem of a movie. I love Timothee and his work, a great actor who captures and captivates you. Very good reaction, react more Timmy movies please

I was listening to an old podcast episode with Timothée Chalamet and Josh Horowitz the other day and Timmy said that Nic told him that he relapsed 13 times before finally getting clean. Each day is tough but I'm glad he seems to be doing better.

Relapse is definitely part of recovery. My vice was alcohol and I’ve been in treatment a few times. Right now is the longest I’ve gone with out a drink in 12 years and hopefully my few stints inpatient and sticking with AA and therapy it keeps it going.

This is one of my favorite books that I've ever read in my entire life! It took me a very long time to read because the subject matter was kind of close at heart and I cried constantly, I cried through the whole entire book and when it was over, I was like that was just the most loving, thoughtful, love letter that a father could write to a son. I wasn't very happy with the movie because what they did was they took the father's book, which was called Beautiful Boy, and the Sons book, which he wrote later on, and smashed them together. It did not have the same impact as just the father's book. If you ever get a chance to read that book I highly, highly recommended it.😢

This movie was so important to me when it came out to know it was based on a book a memoir by nic about him I was reeled in cause it’s so important there’s more addict voices to be heard from their perspective rather than hollywoods POV. I grew up around addiction my whole life had to watch all my intermediate family become addicted to something you lose everything and it affects everyone. Luckily some became sober but others close to death or just went down the wrong path. I loved how it ended open because if I remember nic made it a point too to also point out is that once you’re an addict always an addict its truly an everyday fight, especially if it’s genetic which it is for me. Soon I spiraled never thought I would but I was sad depressed suicidal. I’m happy to be sober and say I wasn’t abusing for long but it’s a lonely world. This movie was POWERFUL. Showed my mom, was brought to tears. It hurts so much more when you grow up around that and manage to become an addict too but what I didn’t realize at the time as a child was it was always in me. Loved your reaction and channel in general you guys are always so respectful of different perspectives. MOURNING THE LIVING IS REAL I’m currently going through this it’s seriously a numbing feeling it’s weird….

Congratulations, guys !!! You're the first reacting channel to watch and react to this film. I've been trying to get other reactors to see this but I lose out. I attended the premiere of this film at our local theater in the afternoon. Only 20 counting myself were there. It hit everyone very hard. (I know I beat Bryce out for the amount of tear flow !) I think the scene in the bathroom had everyone in the theater emotional. A middle age couple were sitting in the aisle across from me and the mother was pleading between tears "Don't do it. Don't do it." While two rows ahead of me was this college age guy and girl sitting next to each other and he slowly leans over to his girl and rests his head on her shoulder You can tell he was trying to stifle his crying because he kept hitching his shoulders. She drew an arm around him whispered in his ear "Do you need to call your brother when we get home?" and he slowly shook his head yes. What a powerful movie experience this was and I think it was a film with a story that needs to be told. Steve Carell and Timothee Chalamet deserved Golden Globes and Oscars for their performances but 2018 was the year when streaming services were putting out movies to do battle with major studios and mainstream films and the Oscars only limited the movies that did big on streaming services that showed potential. "Beautiful Boy" was pulled out of theaters way too soon (It only lasted 2 weeks in Syracuse). Hopefully other reactors will get the hint that if one reactor can watch this film then so should they. A tough film to watch but I've seen it 6 times since 2018 thanks to a German DVD company that put out the film so all region DVD players can play it.

Such a good reaction! I’ve suffered from alcoholism for a long time at a young age! It runs in the family- but being sober feels nice but empty. And it will never not feel empty, it is a constant struggle. There are underlining issues at play! But you have to make the conscious choice to choose life and that’s what motivates you to be better!

20 years, that’s how long I’ve been dealing with my family in the drugs. I personally couldn’t take it anymore so my family relationship is strained and I don’t talk to anyone. I couldn’t watch my cousins parents mess up again and hurt them again, I’ve been there with my bio mom so seeing it happen to them brought back so many bad memories. I may not talk to them anymore but I do hope they stay sober this time

I first saw this in 2020 when I was watching a lot of lowkey, slice-of-life, indie drama films, and I remember really loving the film as a whole even though it broke my heart several times over. Surprising but wonderful to see it being discovered and recognized a few years later. I hope this first reaction catches on for others.

I've read Beautiful Boy and Tweak after watching this movie. Nic had none of the usual history that you think of when young addicts. Stable home, loving family.

i was not expecting this movie 😭😭

Ive recently seen this movie and i was just about to comment that u should watch it, so im so glad u reacted to it. Its such an amazing film. My favourite scenes have to be the ones near the end where nick oded because even with the severity of the situation, beautiful music is playing over top and the narration of 'mourning the living' is so impactful. And also i love the poem in the end credits, message about seeing the beauty in life. Ik this is long, but one more thing is i know a very important message of this movie is that it focuses on what to do with addiction instead if why addiction happened. It doesn't affect gender, race, age, sexuality, ethnicities, abilities, whether u were rich or poor, lived in a loving home or not, addiction can still affect many many ppl thats why its so important to spread the awarness of it

So grateful to the 3 of you for reacting to this movie it holds such a place in my heart and more need to react to it. I lost my 26 year old brother to addiction 6 years ago, it was addiction/suicide due to drugs (this June) and to say this movie is more than accurate is an understatement, both Steve and Timothy captured both their roles so well, when I 1st watched this movie I was in tears thinking of what my mother and I went thro with my brother. I really hope the movie has helped more to learn of addiction, how it can rip a family apart, then once you suffer the loss life is never the same again. I've never seen this movie and I don't know that I could sit through it. I imagine it must take a lot and you guys are really strong for getting through it.

This wrecked my soul. This movie hit me like a ton of freaking bricks. I had never experienced loss like this before, where it was from someone my age. I had a friend that I went to high school with who was a drug addict and he was quite possibly one of the nicest guys I'd had the pleasure of meeting and knowing. He disappeared one day and was gone for months. I was afraid that he was going to be kicked from school, which he was, and he never came back. After school let out for summer, I met up with a few other people from school and they told us that he had broken into his stepmom's house, stolen all of the electronics and money that he could get his hands on, and sold it for drugs. Then school started up again, I was a Junior at this point and I looked all over campus for him to show up, because he would always track me down first thing in the morning and give me a huge bear hug and we'd catch up, but he was no where to be seen. At the end of the first week, news came out about how a high school student had overdosed and passed away over summer. Monday following the news, my high school held an assembly and broke the news to us that he had passed away and that lessons were going to resume the following week, as to allow time for grieving. What sucked the most is, he was going to graduate this year. Anyway, seeing Bryce crying, also shattered me during this movie.😭😢😥

I just wanted to say that I cried while watching your reaction to this movie, also my interpretation of what the lady was referring to during the meeting pertaining to it being "harder to mourn the living" is for multiple reasons. 1) being that it's hard to watch someone you care about in pain in a constant state of suffering which is worse than just having them leave this world and rest where you know they are no longer suffering. 2) like the scene where Julia was brought to the hospital, the pain is unending someone going through a constant cycle of death and resuscitation whereas naturally death is the means to an end of a long suffering and not something that should be experience like a trip to one's local fast-food restaurant that's how I view the statement at the meeting made by the lady.

It’s a phenomenal sketch of the reality and the experience. But it’s not impossible to recover and feel love again. You are worthy always. There are different ways of coping. Drugs will never fulfill that void. Sending love to those impacted or know of or are experiencing this struggle. ❤

Addiction is different for everyone - but for all of us, it fucking sucks. For me it's simply that classic line you hear. "When you can stop - you don't want to. When you want to stop - you can't." It destroys everything - worst of all yourself. Relationships suffer - sure. But what I found harder was the loss of myself and who I was before it all. I was replaced with this half alive thing. All my days blurred into one. It's hard for me to hear people blame those with addictions. It's an illness. Just like any other. The sooner more people understand that the easier it will be for people to ask for help. The shame of it all literally costs people their lives - not to mention the cost of an in patient rehab facility.

As a girlfriend of a recovering meth/fentanyl addict this movie hits home. Strangely my boyfriend is the one who introduced me to this movie. It's a favorite of his because it's so real to life. I wish more people would watch this movie. So many people I know say it's his choice, he can stop if he wants, but it's so much more complicated than that. My boyfriend vomited and wished for death day and night for 35 days before it started getting better, and it was the worst torture I have ever seen anyone go though. It's been 2 years and his body is still "adjusting". He doesn't sleep normal hours because his body is so used to being awake for days on end. He normal slept 2 hours every 5-7 days when he was using. His bowel function is still not normal, and may never be, often when on meth addicts so not eat or poop for days or weeks at a time. People have no idea what hell an addict goes through. This movie sheds a bright light on that hell.

I'm addicted to opioids for ten years now, 5 months sober(so like tiny baby step). I like that the movie showed all the apologies and promises and relapses. Its so true, I feel like my own words don't have meaning, but I still say them. One thing that wasnt shown, was the psychosis you can get while using or from withdrawls. Its like a full-blown mental breakdown, you never recover fully, your thinking is worse forever. For a long time I feltangry at the doctors, who (in part) got me on these drugs.srry for bad english, greetings from Poland!
