Visit Canterbury Cathedral and The Canterbury Tales
Canterbury (Listeni/ˈkæntərˌbɜri/ or /ˈkæntərˌbɛri/)[1] is a historic English cathedral city, which lies at the heart of the City of Canterbury, a district of Kent in South East England. It lies on the River Stour.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canterbury
Canterbury Cathedral in Canterbury, Kent, is one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England and forms part of a World Heritage Site. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England and symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Its formal title is the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ at Canterbury.
Founded in 597, the cathedral was completely rebuilt 1070-77. The east end was greatly enlarged at the beginning of the twelfth century, and largely rebuilt in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174 , with significant eastward extensions to accommodate the flow of pilgrims visiting the shrine of Thomas Becket, the archbishop who was murdered in the cathedral in 1170. The Norman nave and transepts survived until the late fourteenth century, when they were demolished to make way for the present structures.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canterbu...
The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer at the end of the 14th century. The tales (mostly written in verse although some are in prose) are presented as part of a story-telling contest by a group of pilgrims as they travel together on a journey from Southwark to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. The prize for this contest is a free meal at the Tabard Inn at Southwark on their return.
After a long list of works written earlier in his career, including Troilus and Criseyde, House of Fame, and Parliament of Fowls, the Canterbury Tales was Chaucer's magnum opus. He uses the tales and the descriptions of its characters to paint an ironic and critical portrait of English society at the time, and particularly of the Church. Structurally, the collection resembles The Decameron, which Chaucer may have read during his first diplomatic mission to Italy in 1372.

The Mayflower was the ship that in 1620 transported 102 English Pilgrims, including a core group of Separatists, to New England. Their story is one of travail and survival in a harsh New World environment.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayflower
Robert Cushman (1578 -- 1625) Robert Cutchman or Cushman was baptized at Rolvenden, County Kent, England, February 9, 1577/8. He served as the Chief Agent for the Separatist Leiden contingent and that of Plymouth Colony from 1617 to his death in the spring of 1625.[1]

AFAIK the Mayflower never went anywhere near the Netherlands. It was chartered by Cushman from Canterbury, sailed from Greenwich (London, UK) to Plymouth, then across the Atlantic to America to the area they named "New England", still called that today. Modern-day Massachusetts, that area. Among its settlers was a young man called De La Noye, who then anglicized his name to "Delano". Former US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was his direct descendant. Regards from Canterbury, Kent, UK.

Thanks for your support. I grew up in Faversham(9 miles from canterbury) I also lived in Denmark for 10 years, in Southern Jutland( on the Danish/German border), 9 miles from Flensborg in the area which was known as Angeln, where the Angles came from. The Jutes came from Northern Jutland. Still today English is close to Danish. (English) We can all stick our little fingers up our nose and pluck snot out. (Danish) Vi kan alle stikke vores lille fingers op vores naese og plukke snot ud.

I think the King Henry quote is wrong. I’ve heard historians quote him as saying, “Won’t anyone rid me of this TROUBLESOME priest!?”

The Charge Is Because Of The Dissolution Of The Monasteries. Abbeys, Priories, Chantries, Etc. As The Archbishop Of Canterbury Is Responsible For Ensuring The Return Of The Lands And Fabric Of The Dissolution. Like. Nearby St Augustine's Abbey. Hence The Charge.

ESL and Popular Culture . Thanks.. I'll check that video out. I personally really don't want another revolution. Not my lifetime. They get a bit too bloody. I know you gotta have certain things for change, yet I'm opposed to any form of violence. Thanks again for the link to the video though, I appreciate that.

I visited Canterbury today and was surprised to see a charge of £10.50 for an adult to walk inside the Cathedral. Usually in my experience, a Church asks for a contribution for admittance - burt as there were 3 adults and 2 children in our party we did not pay the admittance - what a shame!! What was it Jesus said about money? Cursing the fig tree was Jesus's way of saying that the whole nation had become spiritually barren before the Lord. They had the form of religion but not the reality. They knew the right words to say, but their hearts were far from God. His words hold true today. Gods house should be open to all.

Yes. Too expensive, maybe just a small fee, like 2 pounds. I think it's cheeky and wrong to charge that much.

+Canyou Sadly, the present Archbishop of Canterbury (Welby) is a staring-eyed, politically motivated virtue signaller, and the previous one (Williams) welcomed sharia law in UK. They are no more spiritual than I am as an atheist ex-Episcopalian.

Is this what people do on KZfaq?! I'm reviewing this video for a class I teach and accidentally started looking at the comments. It's pathetic. They should disable comments on all videos, because there is no socially redeeming value to any of it. If you want to be an ignorant, hateful shit, do it on your own time.

The person who puts the video up has the option at any time of disabling comments. Most leave it on so they can wallow in glory of the occasional 'well done' comments. they can also remove all unpleasant comments but most can't be bothered to monitor.
@ESLandPopularCulture
@ESLandPopularCulture 7 жыл бұрын
people can police the comments at anytime, but when you have over 3,000 videos on many channels - taking time to remove comments is not productive. freedom of speech - good and bad .
