Freestanding Board of First Fruits-style former Church of Ireland church, dated 1809, remodelled c. 1830, now disused. Comprising four-bay nave with three-stage tower to west, having slightly projecting gabled entrance bay flanked by porches with gables to front and side elevations. Pitched slate roofs, tower having square-plan bottom stage, octagonal-plan drum with corbel table, crenellations and spire. Roughcast rendered walls to nave, having cut limestone buttresses flanking eastern three bays. Cut sandstone walls to porches, with carved limestone date plaques to north and south gables having heraldic motifs, and having ashlar limestone quoins, plinth courses and carved limestone copings terminating in decorative scrolls and gables surmounted by ornate stepped carved finials. Ashlar limestone to entrance bay with similar detailing to gable. Cut sandstone walls to tower, with string course between stages. West elevation has cut limestone plinth. Pointed arch openings to nave, some blocked up, others with timber Y-tracery windows, all with rendered sills. Square-headed triple-light windows to front elevations of porches, having cut limestone block-and-start surrounds with carved limestone label-mouldings with decorative stops and remains of timber cinquefoil heads, with cast-iron bars. Lancet windows to nolrth and side elevations of porches, having cut limestone block-and-start surrounds with carved limestone hood-mouldings and remains of decorative timber tracery comprising double-light over single cinquefoil light. Quatrefoil openings to middle stage of tower, with fixed timber windows. Ogee-headed cut limestone openings to drum, with timber louvers. Ashlar limestone entrance bay comprises recesseddoorway having pointed arch opening with carved limestone hood-moulding having ornate stops. Carved limestone hood-moulding to extenal face of entrance, with decorative carved hood-moulding with decorative stops. Inscribed blind lancets flanking doorway. Carved blind quatrefoil to pediment, set in round frame. Graveyard to site with some elaborate monuments and having roughly dressed sandstone piers to road entrance, with double-leaf wrought-iron vehicular and pedestrian gates, and pointed arch pedestrian entrance towards Castle Hyde, all set to rubble sandstone boundary walls.
Appraisal
This former Church of Ireland church was built by the Hydes of Castle Hyde, and remodelled in the Gothic Revival style by G.R. Pain for John Hyde in the 1830s. The church retains its original, simple form which is enlivened by Pain’s elaborate porches and gabled entrance. The ornate limestone dressings are finely carved and are indicative of the skill of nineteenth-century craftsmen. The use of limestone dressings juxtaposed with sandstone walls, provides a textural and chromatic contrast which further enlivens the façade. The site retains its graveyard, piers and gates and boundary walls which adds context to the site.

Castlehyde, also known as Litter parish in the records, is a lovely church. Live only a few miles away from it. Even in the 19th century the congregation was small, about 30 to 40. By the 1940s there was no parish congregation. A car with the rector of nearby Fermoy and a few passengers came out once a month just to say service but a few years later it was decided to close it permanently. A few local churches like Rathcormac was offered for sale to convert into a house or other use but there was no interest. I think Michael Flatley still owns nearby Castlehyde house.

Hey Sue and Irish eyes, it’s such a shame that local folk and community don’t preserve and resurrect these ‘exquisite’ examples of architecture, they will be lost in no time at all. The money the families paid and artistry to remember their loved ones in the hand hewn headstones is totally worth keeping, and I’m sure a total dying art in our ‘modern concept’. Would they have ever thought their time on this Earth would be forgotten by ‘modern people’ so easily and readily? The mind boggles……..

So much history & attention to detail regarding many of the families interred within, "Thank You" both for the tour of this stunning now abandoned church and it's graveyard, documenting this national heritage property? is a credit to you as this will benefit many generations still to come also the stands of daffodils interspersed among the lichen covered graves is heartening to see, the fragrance I imagine while viewing the headstones would be intoxicating, we do grow them here in Oz mainly in the cooler states or as a potted indoor specimen, one of my favorite of all flowers in fact I procure the pure French jonquil absolute for my natural perfume blends it's deep & narcotic scent is just gorgeous, definitely two thumbs UP👍👍Regards...Shane

Hi Sue, just an FYI regarding the flashing that occured on the headstone while using the torch. This happens because of the LED light in your phone. It's being pulsed to give high brightness and minimal battery drain. When the on-off cycle is synchronized, then it doesn't flash. Great video, thank you, I really enjoy them!

@@SerenitySueGraveyards I wonder if you can experiment in situations where you have a lot of natural light, if you could turn off the gimbal while using the torch? This would take the LED light on the camera out of the equation because it wouldn't pulse. Actually, I was just reading that you could try using a super high powered torch. Ron from FOTF mentioned on one of his videos that he uses a 9,000 lumen. I'm not sure, but it may be a halogen light which is not LED so no pulse from that. This is why I respect what you guys are doing, not only finding subject matter and editing, but having to learn all the nuances in the science of filming! Good luck Sue!
@SerenitySueGraveyards
@SerenitySueGraveyards 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rebecca this torch is 10000 lumens the other one I have is not as high powered but I don't remember it flashing, it's definitely to do with light and shade, I may bring 2 torches now lol and I think buy a better pack pack to hold everything 😀 ❤️❤️❤️

Sometimes they do bury people under the church floor, to be honest one plaque did say near this place, I know of working churches that do have people under the floor, kind of makes it all the more sad 😪❤️

Great video, but you made me nervous by going in the church. I wish they could have removed the plaques though. You kind of made me laugh when you said the church was still in good shape as you walked past the floor with gaping holes.

Very sad to view the castlehyde church, that has been totally abandoned, unattended and neglected..in eastern countries eventhough Christianity seems to be less, they keep the very old churches alive and renovation is being carried out without disturbing its architecture..but western are the orthodox once spreading the Christianity to the rest of the world, but now trying to sell churh yards to public, gives much pain and agony. The spectacular church stands as damaged without maintenance..pl all the people take effort to renovate the blessed church for worship and receive abundant blessings of God.

I agree GIN, it's such a shame to see so many abandoned churches, some still have plaques on the walls to people who have passed on, maybe even crypts underground too.

@@SerenitySueGraveyards it’s as though our faith is slowly fading away, lots of churches are being shut in England but at least the really old ones keep going. I’m from a small village in Derbyshire called parwich, the original church was Saxon built but the Victorians decided to knock it down and rebuild it. Some churches around that area are as old as 11th century. Love what you do.

Well, they took away my Great Great Great Great Grandfather's headstone which was by the main gate. They took away a few headstones. It was a fine headstone that you could clearly read. He died in 1790. I wonder what they did with it? I guess they didn't think any living blood relative would notice. 😢

@@SerenitySueGraveyards Yeah. I was very disappointed. I'm big into genealogy and it took a lot of research and information gathering to find the burial plot of that ancestor. Castlehyde graveyard was massively overgrown and neglected at the time I found it. I had searched the old section of Kilcrumper graveyard in Fermoy and that took months of Sunday afternoons because the headstones were very degraded and the grass and brambles were covering half the headstones but still I had no luck. The wife and kids were getting pretty fed up with going to Fermoy graveyards instead of the beach..Or anywhere else but a graveyard.🤣 But then something spiritual happens that seems to go beyond luck. I am very systematic when I'm searching for a grave marker. There are no records kept in these old graveyards and Castlehyde graveyard in the early 90's was totally overgrown. There were audible groans in the car when we looked in the gate. I was going to say. Ahhhhh!!! This is like searching for a needle in a haystack let's get something to eat. But something stopped me. I said to my wife there is something drawing me in and it was very strong. I said to my wife and kids give me ten minutes there is something going on and I didn't say anymore. I normally start at the back and work my way to the main gate. I did enough graveyards to do this automatically. I walked fifty feet and something stopped me. I came back towards the gate and stopped and there it was with the tall grass almost covering it. A 5 ft headstone with the name and the day, month, and year that he died. I had found it and I was a bit stunned but within 30 seconds I was wading through the long grass to the back of the church without stopping or looking at headstones and stopped at another headstone with my ancestors on my mother's side. I had the information but not a clue where they were buried. And here they were also about ten of them in that grave. Call that what you will but something showed me those graves. You may have the luck to find a needle in a haystack, but to find a needle that you are not even looking for is something else. I guess if you are dead for over two hundred years you are not going to miss out on your Great Great Great Great Grandchildren when they come to visit😂. His headstone was missing the next time I visited because they cleaned the place up near the main gate on the right by the wall and I'm afraid to find out what they did with it. I'd like to think they put it somewhere and not break it up.

Wow, that's such a great Story Peter but I'm devastated the headstone has gone, now there was that tiny building off to the front of the churchyard seemed to have some stones in there, not full stones but little parts of them, wonder did they put the headstone in there 😳

@@SerenitySueGraveyardsThanks!! You know Sue that's the place where they kept the tools to dig the graves I bet. I wonder did they place it in there as a floor slab face down or something. Or placed somewhere else. There were a couple moved and it's no easy task to move them. I hope they didn't brake them up. There was high relief and in very good condition considering it was over 200 years old. It would have cost a pretty penny at the time.
