Very special and wonderful film footage of the beautiful island of Cuba and its capital Havana. This raw 35mm footage was probably shot for the purpose of being used in a movie or in a documentary. It shows Cuba while it was the Republic of Cuba. Although the exact date of filming is unknown, it was probably shot before the Cuban revolution which eventually lead to this country becoming a communist state in 1953.
The Cuban Revolution was an armed revolt conducted by Fidel Castro's revolutionary "26th of July Movement"and its allies against the military dictatorship of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista. The revolution began in July 1953 and continued sporadically until the rebels finally ousted Batista on 31 December 1958, replacing his government. The 26th of July 1953 is celebrated in Cuba as the Day of the Revolution (Dia de la Revolución).
The 26th of July Movement later reformed along Marxist-Leninist lines, becoming the Communist Party of Cuba in October 1965 [Wiki].
The original 35mm film footage has been motion-stabilized, slightly speed-corrected, enhanced and colorized by means of modern A.I. software.

Music: Various, Cuban style, by contemporary composers.

*Who can help with the timeline to identify the locations? Is this film before or after the Cuban Revolution? To tell by the cars it looks like late 1940s or early 1950s* .

The first cars are pre 1939. What's the difference between communistas and capitalista? One is a gangster state one is a quasi police state. Corporations are fake entities in contemplation of law. Even the CCP uses them. Communism is a myth; it has never actually happened.

@@KevinPichardoCompany01 that's true, he was mixed, but that doesn't really mean anything because nevertheless, racism and discrimination were prevalent in Cuba in it's early history. Even Batista himself couldn't go to white majority areas in the country. Just saying.

Beautiful video!!! As a “special period baby” I greatly thank you for this; I didn’t get to see my country before it was plagued by destruction and misery. The comment section, on the other hand, is truly disappointing. Came down here hoping someone might’ve identified some of the places shown in the video and the only thing I found was tons of misinformation and the typical unfounded debate of whether or not a communist Cuba would’ve flourished if it wasn’t for the Embargo imposed by the US… It’s saddening how people go out of their way to perpetuate the lies and hate spread during the last six decades. A simple comment on the internet may seem harmless but it turns extremely dangerous when you’re denying the pain and trauma of multiple generations, the true history of a whole country. VIVA CUBA LIBRE!

Rick88888888 Excellent quality of the original film. Looks better on color. I don't know which software are you using for coloring. I'm an historian for the Public Transportation on Havana and Cuba. The real color of the livery on the tramways was silver grey, with the frame for the doors and windows on yellow. The livery of the buses was orange, with a dark green stripe and brown on the top, cause the bodies were made of wood and they used the same paint on the roofs than the used on awnings to make it water tight. The date of the film should be by the end of 1948 or beginnings of 1949. On 1950 there were metal bodies buses including General Motors old look.

There’s a mixture of time periods - going from early 30s to mid 50s. The segment in which the cars (late 1920 models) have to step on the sidewalk to make the curb are probably related to the 1933 revolution that overthrew Antonio Machado (the passengers in one car are carrying rifles); it was this overthrow that first put Batista in the political limelight.

Having a parasite, like Fidel and, more importantly, those who financed his "enthronement," is what caused the demise - all that happened there was a prelude of what's occurring now in the U.S.A and other parts of the, so called, Free World. I have a friend who visits Cuba regularly and he tells me that the "elite" there live like kings and based on other sources and my own experience, I've confirmed that this is true.

Definitely pre-1952 with the trams/streetcars still in operation. The system was unusual with the cars having twin trolley poles and overhead wires instead of the usual single pole and wire and the return of the circuit through the track. Apparently there were a number of reasons - dust on the track in the dry season preventing good contact plus flooding in the wet season.

In my parents day, Cuba was the Pearl of the Antilles and Havana was called The Paris of the Caribbean. I left Havana in 1963 at 5 yo. I know all these places, wish I could remember their names. @19:04 is the entrance to El Morro fort. On the other side of that long street they filmed is el Malecon, the long sea wall that guards Havana Harbor. Too bad they didn't show it too.

Seeing this video now, makes me sad in many levels , just returned from Cuba and I can’t tell you , scarcity , shortages of everything, people leaving theirs homes and running , electricity shortages, water shortages and no farms no proper food no nothing , the new buildings looks older than the buildings in the video , people has no money to renovate their homes , the beautiful colonial houses are in their worst condition ever, people are really suffering from ever, only negros are left in Havana , no real native Americans no clear blood Cubans , people running prefer to die in the oceans to USA instead of living in Cuba, very very very sad to see the country like that, having no hope that country will improve anytime soon as long as people gave up trying

Shortages? Read this: “The Economic Blockade that United States imposed on Cuba, and which has been uninterrupted for more than 60 years, is product of the revenge of Dulles brothers against Fidel Castro, as a result of Castro expropriating the United Fruit Company (UFCO), more than 50,000 hectares of cultivation (Sugar Cane). Allen Dulles (CIA Director), and his brother John Foster Dulles (US Secretary of State), were a shareholder in UFCO, and were on the payroll for more than 20 years. Both Bros. demanded payment from Cuban Gov’t for the land expropriated at ridiculously high amount, when United Fruit Co. had obtained these large estates for $7 dollars per hectare and demanded compensation for $4,800 dollars per hectare. Castro was also asked to pay the cost of hotels, houses and casinos owned by the New York Mafia and other figures of high politics in the US. As Cuba does not pay, the Economic Blockade continues. “If we can't assassinate Castro, let's assassinate his economy”. Now, 12 Presidents have passed in the White House, and the Blockade continues. Castro, Dulles Bros., Meyer Lansky, Kennedy, LBJ and all that generation have already died; they are no longer here. And the Economic Blockade continues. Why? Why, if Castro NEVER affected the interests of the US people? Castro affected the interests of the New York Mafia, the UFCO and the interests of the Dulles Brothers. The Castro Gov't affected the interests some companies (6 companies), that conspired to assassinate him, but not affected the US People. (It would be an example to say that Mexico imposed an Economic Block on the US, cuz the US Gov’t confiscated properties from “El Chapo”, or from the Mexican Drug Trafficking Cartels). Castro never seized property from US citizens. Castro only seized the property of the New York Mafia. So, why? If perhaps the reason for the Blockade was cuz Fidel Castro was an ally of USSR, well, USSR has not existed for more than 30 years either. Then why? What is the reason for continuing with this Economic Blockade against Cuba? The answer to these questions, in any case, would be: "Cuz a dark power within the US wants to impose itself in Cuba, violating its sovereignty, in the same way that it has done and continues to do so throughout the world with the weakest nations". No common citizen of the US has anything against the Cuban people, but a certain sector of the Government's High Politics does…” Now, If you want to know about the atrocities and massacres of the UFCO and the CIA in Chile, Venezuela, Peru, Colombia, Cuba, all the Caribbean and Central America, consult Wikipedia: “Wars of the Banana Republics”. (From Stephen Kinzer book: “The Brothers”). Write the latter that appears in parentheses, and verify this information right here on KZfaq. Or, do the same and search for it on Google. In History Channel: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9tlo7qWncm1g6M.html “Batista y la Mafia en Cuba”.

Very nice, Rick. I'd say this was right around 1950. Clearly before La Revolution. It is unfortunate that the second half of the 20th century did Cuba no favors, nor indeed much of the entire world.

I'm Cuban and from Havana, born and raised. I have so much to say! I can recognize almost every location. The only significant changes in the urban design of my city is the decadence and destruction after 60+ years of communism, it makes Havana looks like we have been thru war. That's why I think Havana is the city of nostalgia, we Cubans live in that nostalgia. From what I see the videos are from the 40s to the very early 50's. Some of the places I recognize from the video: @0:11 That's close to the beginning of Malecon in the Morro Side. @0:37 The once tramway crossing in front of Capitolio @2.39 Iglesia del Corazon de Jesus @6:22 The University of Havana @7:29 Paseo de Prado @11:30 Monument to Jose Miguel Gomez @12:48 Maceo Monument with presidential palace in the background @13:45 Castillo de la Real Fuerza I guess that I never paid attention to most of those places while living in Cuba, maybe because I didn't have "tourist's eyes", I left 5 years ago when I was 18.
