I have been a bowl turner for almost 30 years. I have finally settled on walnut oil for my bowls (the Doctor's Woodshop and/'r Mike Mahoney's walnut oil). Mineral oil never cures and hardens, and bees wax provides almost no water protection. The walnut oil does, and the Doctor's stuff has carnauba wax in it, and he 'microaggregates' it which translates to some thing like you don't need heat for it to flow. The walnut oil and carnauba wax will 'waterproof' your cutting boards. I would be curious also, if you have ever done end grain boards and see how deep the oils penetrate in end grain. The Doctor says to apply final coat with a heat gun for deeper penetration.

Bowls and cutting boards are completely different types of finishes, though. With bowls you want something hard and durable that'll withstand handling, washing, etc. With cutting boards, you just want a sealant, and even if the penetration isn't 100% you still get a good sealant (plenty for its purpose on a cutting board). Walnut oil does sound interesting, and I imagine if I was turning bowls or making that sort of stuff it would be worth checking out! I have had boards break on customers in the past (after a bad drop, usually) and I've done repairs and gotten a good look at a cross section and while the oil doesn't go all the way in, it definitely gets deep enough to do its job. I also give a can of stuff to my customers so they can do maintenance as needed and will refinish a board if it dries out on them, and so far only one board dried out after about 5 years of zero maintenance, so I'd say in the real world just about anything is adequate for a cutting board :) Thanks for your comment! I'm going to try the walnut oil for non cutting boards for sure!

Well, as for finishes on bowls, you do not want a hard finish. Main reason is that wood moves, and any hard surface finish will eventually fail because of wood movement. The walnut oil does cure and harden, which mineral oil never does. The owner of the Doctor's woodshop commented that mineral oil was used on the old butcher blocks as an 'impermeable' finish, applied at night, and then scraped off in the morning before starting again. My preference for cutting boards when I do make them, is for end grain rather than flat grain. With end grain, the oil will penetrate a lot deeper than flat/side grain.

Tung oil (food grade or 100% pure) is an alternative. I applied to my teak cutting board in light coats only followed by wiping excess off immediately (a whole other discussion - the correct way to apply Tung oil). I then let it cure for a month after drying and buffing. Then I apply a mineral oil/beeswax paste and periodically as needed

With the carnauba wax, you have to heat it with the gun to get it to flow. Bees wax does look nice, but offers almost no water protection. Walnut oil will soak in and then harden/cure. It is my preference for my bowls and cutting boards.

Great video, Vincent. I should try some of that stuff on a small piece of furniture. P.S. I noticed you have a Ridgid oscillating sander in your shop. Have you ever had to buy new sanding sleeves for it and if so did they work? Ridgid doesn't make replacement sleeves and the last time I bought some by another brand (I think it was Diablo) they would keep sliding off the spindle no matter how I adjusted it. According to a google search, this is a common problem with this sander but I haven't found a fix yet.
@vincentferrari
@vincentferrari Жыл бұрын
Funny you ask because right now I wanna punt it out the window because the ones I have are sliding on the spindles!! I'm pondering just sucking it up and buying a dedicated oscillating spindle sander and hoping I have better luck 😥 If you'd typically oil and wax a piece, this stuff works great for that and it smells awesome!
@DashnerDesignRestoration

@@vincentferrari Yeah, I'm thinking of just buying a new one, too. Seems like a waste but I guess there's no fix for it. Looking forward to your next video!
@vincentferrari
@vincentferrari Жыл бұрын
I'm pissed because the whole reason I bought this one was so I didn't have to have two machines and now the spindles are useless. I even tried wrapping the spindles themselves in masking tape to take up any gaps but it just did nothing, and even if I cap the spindles it's like the sleeves aren't grabbing the spindle any more so it wouldn't slide up and down but the second I apply any material to the sleeve the shaft would spin but the sleeve won't. It's beyond aggravating!! Also I did notice they redesigned it. I wonder if the new one has the same issue?
@DashnerDesignRestoration
@DashnerDesignRestoration Жыл бұрын
@@vincentferrari I hear ya! I haven’t even used mine in years because of the issue with the sleeves. But at the same time I couldn’t get myself to get rid of it because it works fine otherwise. I didn’t know they redesigned it. I’ll have to check out the new one.

Nice vid. I’ve seen videos where people just have a container out their boards in it. When there done they just put the top on it. Why don’t you do that?
@vincentferrari
@vincentferrari 7 ай бұрын
If you mean for soaking, I used to do that in the shop before this one but I found this method was quicker, easier, and didn’t need as much dry time afterward. A mineral oil bath is perfectly fine, though, and I even reference my old method of doing it that way in this video!
