I haven’t seen Seasons Afeild yet! It looks amazing! I’m going to have to go check it out on their website. I just want to give you some words of encouragement though! I’m sure it’s frustrating feeling as though your children didn’t learn much from the geography curriculum, but I’m sure they learned a lot! At 4 and 6 a lot of geography is introducing them to the concept of geography. The fact that we have states, and that our states are all so different is really a huge idea for children that young to fully grasp! But you have laid building blocks down that they can build upon in the coming years, and when they hear a state name or something like ‘desert’ in the future they’ll have something to reference even if it’s just a vague idea! Great job seeing it through to the end even though you didn’t love it or feel they were really learning a lot from it! I know that’s hard to do, at least for me lol!

That’s so true!!! Thank you for that reminder, I’m sure you’re right! To me it’s so important they learn to “love learning” at this age and this one just was not that for us 😂 and yes check out seasons afield!! So fun!!!

Thanks for the review. These two and The Early American were the ones I was thinking about from BF.

I am sooo tempted to purchase the seasons afield ( even though we truly don't need it right now) I can never make up my mind on what I actually want to buy from BF. All of the sets they have look so good. :)

Haha it’s so hard to decide!! I think it is good for a big age range, so you could always pick it up another year! Or maybe have it go alongside more of a “textbook” science so you don’t have to drop whatever you’re currently using ☺️

This is a great review! We live in a one season state (South Florida) so I wish we had the seasons to do a seasonal curriculum.

Thank you!! That makes it hard 🙈🙈 I do think if you have ponds/streams and things outside that you could do it!! The study didn’t require snow, I just sort of got lucky with that timing 😂 I’m trying to think if there was anything very season-specific 🤔 probably just leaves changing color sort of thing..I think it’s still possible! ❤️

We're reading Brambly Hedge right now with a different curriculum and my boys LOVE the illustrations, especially the insides of the trees and stumps.

Do you bounce around in Seasons Afield to fit your current season? Thanks for walking through it so thoroughly! I'm so excited about this.
@PiningOverHome
@PiningOverHome Жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t say we’ve had to bounce around, but I have paused it for a week or two, like when I knew we’d be getting snow. We’ve been going through it quickly, so I wasn’t worried about getting behind haha I held off on the next lesson which was snow until the storm hit us ☺️ you could very easily jump around and do one season as a unit during that season if that makes sense. The seasons aren’t linked to one another chronologically at all.

The Seasons afield looks so fun! Did you start at the very beginning of the teachers guide or find which season you are in and begin there? Thanks!
@PiningOverHome
@PiningOverHome Жыл бұрын
Yes, the very beginning! But we also started in September, so it worked perfectly with the beginning of the guide for where we live ☺️ you could very easily begin at any season though!

I just purchased the US Geography set as well. We do it twice a week, so 2 lessons a week. We have already done the first 6 lessons and I feel as though we have learned nothing. I was so excited for this curriculum, but like you said the books are a bit dry and unexciting. I also was quite disappointed that the extra activities were just KZfaq videos to watch, I was looking forward to fun activities and games. I have heard so much good stuff about this curriculum but now my first experience with it is definitely not the best it’s making me rethink my future purchases.

Exactly!! But to your last part, I am glad I got seasons afield at the same time so I could see that it’s not *all* bad. I’ve heard tons of good reviews about around the world, and don’t think I’ve heard any good reviews from people that have used the geography the whole way through 🙈😂 I’m thinking this was one bad unit in an overall good bunch of units from them ❤️

@@PiningOverHome You are right though. The us history and around the world ones seem to be really good, it’s definitely still in my mind for next year, I’m thinking of still using it but also maybe mixing it with another curriculum just to have as a back up/filler in case it’s doesn’t turn out to be 100% what I want. I actually do this with other subjects as well, by combining 2 together or adding lots of books to a curriculum that already has a spine, just to get more of the living books in there that really make the history/science come alive.
@PiningOverHome
@PiningOverHome Жыл бұрын
Yes that’s a good idea!! I was thinking about the same thing. Looking at sonlights intro to world cultures and adding some of that in with around the world. I know I for sure want to use their hands on history pack for the little activities! And just make up a way it goes with the unit 😂

@@PiningOverHome I have found with some of our past experiences, doing some mix and match and kind of creating your own unit study works really great and you get the best of the things you like in each curriculum.

Just got Seasons Afield and can’t wait to get started! Sad that the new Geography is a bust. Around the World w/ Picture Books is amazing. If you’re debating btw ATW w/ Picture Books and Early American history, ATW is geared better for younger kids. I attempted Early American history when my kids were 4 and 6 and way too advanced for the switched to ATW and they loved it. Even the 4 year old was really into it.

Yaaaay!! You’re going to love it 😍 I know I was so bummed. I haven’t seen anyone excited about geography that’s tried it :/ That’s what I got from looking at EAH as well! The books seemed a bit advanced, but not in the ways I prefer lol I have a video going up Wednesday that talks about what we’re doing for history/geography the rest of the year ☺️

Thank you for sharing this curriculum. It looks lovely. Is it 5 lessons a week? Day 1) read the book, 2) experiment, day 3) painting, day 4) read Slow Down and day 5) walk (wonder) ? If 5 lessons are done a week, how many weeks is this curriculum? Tia x
@PiningOverHome
@PiningOverHome Жыл бұрын
I think most people do 2 lessons a week actually! There are 72 lessons, so you technically could do 4 a week and finish it in half a school year..but it’s a seasonal study, so it’s best to do 2 a week throughout the year ☺️

@@PiningOverHome thank you, that’ sounds so much better for us. I was kind of worried about 5 of those science lessons a week, lol 😂. How long realistically would you say, each lesson might take? I understand from the video that each lesson is different, but approximately how long would say how each lesson might take? We really prioritise math, (saxon takes quite a bit of time each day) and La (use two programs) then read alouds with Sonlight HBL, so looking for a science which is engaging but not too lengthy or a heap of experiments. My son is 7, and he’ll be 8 in Oct. Tia x

Super fast! Less than half an hour. And I like to do the water colors during like a down time, so they can spend however long they want

I used the US geography this year as well… I am disappointed too but I’m still going to try them again for Around the World in Picture books part 1 and see if it’s better! I feel like with US geography I could have just bought the map and then pulled books together myself and not used any of the books they provided!

I agree!! I would’ve rather done it myself, since they didn’t have anything really added beyond the books. Hoping ATW is better 🤞🏼🤞🏼

So they recommend k-3, but at least for my 4 & 6 year old it suited them perfectly. My recommendation would be prek-2nd. An older kid could enjoy it, but I don’t know if they’d really be learning a lot.
Wish I would have found this sooner!! Homeschool game changer!
