Though a lot of what goes on in Kyoto's geisha districts takes place in private teahouses and behind gilded screens, it's no secret that maiko (geisha apprentices) lead strict and challenging lifestyles in the pursuit of their art.
Last year the Kyoto Fan (Discover Kyoto) team had the privilege of interviewing one of Miyagawa-chō's hard working maiko, Fukunae-san, to see what kind of training and preparation she goes through in order to one day become a top class geisha (or geiko, as they are called in Kyoto). Follow along as Fukunae-san takes us through an average day in her life, including music study, hair and make-up, dressing, and entertaining in the evenings. We hope you too will one day have a chance to experience this amazing Kyoto tradition.

DNA , believe me it is all about DNA , many Japanese have a bad skin and many non Japanese have a great skin, this is all about your genes . You might think that eating properly, not drinking , not smoking , sleeping enough, avoiding heavy makeup , helps , but the Maiko wake up at 7am every day sometimes sooner , train all day , eat whenever they get the chance and time to , stay awake at parties every evening until midnight or 1am , and never get to sleep before 2 or 3am . Plus they are made to drink at parties and most of the customers smoke , including them passively, and they are covered in half an inch of makeup everyday . So this is most certainly not a good diet or healthy lifestyle , because non of that applies to a Maiko or Geiko Geisha . This is all about DNA and good genes . I have a very good skin , but i drink , i smoke , i have 4 kids and a very demanding job so i basically never sleep , and i moiturize once a year after a sunburn . It's all about genes .

"A person should have one thing they can do with confidence." I feel that nowadays we lack this kind of mentality... most people have dreams, yet are unable to achieve them, or even take a first step towards them, because of the fear of societal judgement, pressure, etc etc. We should be more openminded towards our dreams and do our best to strive for them!! :)

@rebeccajohnson7599
@rebeccajohnson7599 4 жыл бұрын
@@ShaniTheBurningTree Yeah. I feel like nowadays especially, people can be pretty judgmental. Recently I found out that there is a lot that is required of me when it comes to being in the art industry, especially since I would like to go freelance. The problem is that not everyone will like my work, and that art is a luxury, not a necessity. It also requires connections, almost constantly it seems. But art is the one thing I can do well. But keep in mind, you do have a purpose. Even if you don't realize it, there is something inside of you that you can do to influence others or yourself. Society may demand a lot, and sure there are standard rules (you shouldn't be a delinquent or law breaker, or otherwise don't continue to be as such), but you don't have to allow society to engulf you until there is nothing. Don't let them rule over who you are, and don't feel like you are worthless if you aren't just like what societal standards may demand. You are a unique person, fearfully and wonderfully made. God bless you❤

+xXspedXx Geiko/Maiko/Oiran have a lot of special treatments that date back to like the beginnings of Geisha, and a lot of their skin care developed from the natural resources of Japan, like rice (I heard they use boiled, filtered rice water to keep their skin so fair), Adzuki beans for exfoliation, green tea, Camellia flower oil, and in some cases, pure feces from nightingales. Pretty interesting, right?

I absolutely love how she started off by saying that being a maiko is also about thinking of others. She put a completely different spin on a subject I've read and seen so much about... It's very very feel good. Most documentaries or features are about how harsh it is, but she makes you realise what drives these girls into becoming pieces of art themselves, and the dreams they hold. This is a lovely one!

@@Tamaki742 Yeah, Oiran are like cheaper versions of Maiko and Geisha. Much more respectable establishments are strict and hard on their Maiko to be sure, but tend to treat and care for them way better. Besides which, the events of Memoirs of a Geisha are set during a time of massive upheaval in Japan, a lot more was at stake. I do agree that the movie mixed up Oiran and Geisha, because a lot of what happened in the movie was incorrect.

Nobody in Japan uses more Shamisen than the Geisha . There are about 5000 Geisha in all of Japan , most of them play the Shamisen . the skin of the Shamisen is made from Cat and Dog skin . And the skin needs to be replaced every year or twice a year if the Shamisen is used a lot , and Geisha use it daily , plus they own two or three of them in different size , depending on the style of music they play . So over 10 000 cats and dog are killed in the most atrocious way (skinned alive after having their neck broken) just to provide Shamisen for the Karyukai .

Let's say this video filmed in the same year it posted which is 2015, so in this year she'll be 21, she might has already become a geiko, I wish her all the best and live a happy and blessed life forever. 🥺♥️ Edit : I wrote this comment 6 months ago, I don't even remember how I counted her age😂 I might didn't notice her words from the self introduction part in the interview, if she has said that she was 18 years old, so it is. They are truly beautiful. I remember the first time I saw a maiko documentary i was astounded. I knew I have to visit them there someday. Like the foreign woman Fukunae mentioned, i too think i would cry if i ever saw a maiko/geiko etc in person. The world have evolved, but these historical art forms will never fail to amaze me. How i wished i was born in that era when these arts were in all its glory.

Well ... this goes for every period in history, but you always have to remember and consider the negative aspects of these past times ... which is why I never wished to be born in any time but now, even though I would have loved to experience certain things in history in person. But I'm sure you feel the same way but just didn't mention it :) or do you really wish to be born in Japan in the 18th century to experience this?

Not entirely true - Nara has a an Okiya now that houses a geisha and a maiko- they're looking to grow. And Osaka now has a functioning okiya as well with a geisha and 2 maiko? or 2 geisha and 2 maiko I don't know what it is now. Also, Asakusa in Tokyo houses their geisha district and there are many geisha and hangyoku still working today.

When I was a student in Japan. I met the same young ladies. I asked them “why did you pursue this road for you?” They told me the most polite way “it’s not a choice. It was already paved for us.” I felt my whole heart drop because some enjoy the maiko life and some don’t, they don’t have a say on how they want to look or feel it’s all on the customers perception of them. Overall they are very beautiful and delicate and kind. I highly recommend reserving a table to talk to them because they have a lot to say. Edit: please when you visit japan PLEASE MIND YOUR SPACE BETWEEN THESE LADIES they are very fragile women you must ask for permission to talk to them and enjoy a friendly conversation❤️

Genevieve Vavance I hope you do get to go. I've been there four times, and it never gets old. :) If you spend a day in Gion, you might catch a glimpse of a geiko or maiko. In public, they walk incredibly fast, and they're like hummingbirds as they flit from one teahouse to another. It's like watching living history. :) You'll get the best chance of seeing them at around sunset, as they head out to their first dinner appointments. They never stop for pictures, though.

Watch out for fakes though~ Like they said real ones never stop for photos. They are not there to entertain common tourists. If you see them just standing around and happy to take photos they are just dressed up as geisha, some will even attempt to scam you.

Notice Me Genki : I know.Many Asian tourists can enjoy one day Kimono rental shop and walk around. I see many Chinese dressed up in ho-rrible unacceptable way ( maybe they moved too much not knowing how to fix) video-recorded on KZfaq videos. Simply disgraceful. Btw, you can’t ask for real Geisha unless you have a connection/ someone to pay for it should you were impolite to them etc. Look foreign guests info center it might be different 🤔 for like, a lunch hospitality. AND nowadays they never walk the area outside avoiding tourists, they take 🚕 taxi . Good luck.
