+CaptainSmith23, This brings back a lot of memories. My parents and I sailed on her from Le Havre to New York in 1955 and it was a wonderful experience I will never forget. We had some rough seas the second day out and almost everyone was seasick--except for me. And I remember standing at the railing on the starboard side with the wind and spray whipping around me and I knew this was truly heaven. I have the Revell model which is fairly accurate except for the lower hull which was classified at the time, but I plan to create a shadow box to display it. I'm almost 69 years old now but every time I think of the fastest and sleekest liner ever to sail, I become a child again.

Another beautiful model! I also have this kit I can not wait to build it. Just one note, I saw that you have not painted the parts in white and can be fine, but the decals have a slight silvering effect that I would eliminate with a coat of transparent glossy or satin and then an opaque hand ....... I remember this model and built one when I was a kid. I always ballasted the hulls on my ship models so the would float. This particular kit was a good one in that the hull was one piece. No need to worry about seems leaking. I'm surprised there's no propellers. I preferred detachable lifeboats, which this model didn't have. I never knew the decks were green.

@Toast08087 жыл бұрын
Dirk's NUMA Files There is an idea to bring her to New York as a museum, like the USS INTREPID. However, the problem is, she's an empty shell. The study Crystal Cruises did on her found that she is structurally sound, and could sail again, but at high cost.
@CaptainSmith237 жыл бұрын
I saw an interview with Susan Gibbs about the SS United states and mentioned Crystal cruises.
@qe28367 жыл бұрын
The SSUSC had real plans to move "The Big U" to NY before Crystal was involved, so I think Crystal's action was bad for the ship. It would be easy to make her into a hotel just because she's empty, the museum part will be more difficult. But if they could make the exterior look sound, sandblast and paint it, maybe people's interest in the ship would increase.
@kayjayt86077 жыл бұрын
Some people may not even know about the SS United States enough to care about it. Still, it is a shame that what is considered a proud symbol of America's capabilities in engineering is neglected in our waters. Oddly, the ship's current condition is starting to seem symbolic of America's current problems.

If you study your subject, you will be armed with the knowledge to do a better job. For example, the white water line just above the red is actually only four inches wide on the real S.S. United States. Your white line should appear like a strand of thread but ..... well..... yours is way too wide. Your deck detail is beautiful and your lines are nice and sharp, straight..... That Revell model is not fit well so your job is to hide the seams as well, not an easy task with is one. I sailed on the Big U twice and love her, waiting to see her become a hotel and museum in New York where she belongs..... way cooler than the aircraft carrier with a Concorde...... Been on the Queen Mary hundreds of times growing up in L.A..... I know every inch of that ship!... no exaguration!

CaptainSmith23 Thanks for the reply, yeah, the United States is huge... amazing and, sleek with her low superstructure.... nothing like the floating hotel-barges of today. If you make it to Philadelphia you can get within a couple hundred yards of her, or if you have a kayak you can row up to her.... she's a bit dingy under her last coat of paint and rust but, truly a gem.
