Happy Swiss National Day -- August 1
Alp Auffahrt -- the farmers' ascent of the Alps with their cows -- is an annual Swiss tradition as the farmers take their cows to where they will graze all summer on the beautiful Alpine slopes.

I have seen a similar, but much less ceremonial event in India where a tribe makes their journey with their buffaloes up and down the Himalayas every year.

Such a wonderful tradition! I have two questions. Have the cows calves by the time they go up the mountains? And what do they do with the milk that”s produced while they’re up the mountain!

Most of the farmers make theor own cheese. And when you‘re hiking, most of the farms sell the cheese at the farm. That is a thing I like here in Switzerland. To go on a hike and try the cheese:)

why do you think that? when all the farms around here still had cows, we would bring all the cows in our village to a gracing area higher up the mountain(300+ cows)
