Beautiful Woodland photoshoot with Zeiss Ikon Nettar in BULB MODE!
Embark on a journey through the ethereal woodlands of Firestone Copse, captured on timeless Kodak TMAX 100 film through the iconic Zeiss Ikon Nettar!
Today's photoshoot wasn't your typical point-and-shoot affair. This vintage beauty's slower shutter speeds were out of commission, so I embraced the challenge and ventured into the realm of Bulb mode.

Hi Roger. I see that a lot of these 50's cameras have a PC socket for a flash cable to be attached. I'd love for you to do a video that relies on flash, or even remote flash with a trigger wired up to the pc port. I'm sure you're always looking for ideas for content. I'm a new subscriber and I'm loving the channel. I wish I knew what you teach in the darkroom 30 years ago! I'm presently putting my darkroom great together and hope to be painting soon. Cheers, Steve in Leeds UK.

Cracking images from a very capable vintage folder. I have a Nettar but have never tried it, but have had my Ikonta 521 out and loved that. However, none of my small collection of folders can compare with the quality and utter sharpness of my Moskva 5, (set to 6x9 on Kentmere 400 BW) which blows them all out of the water!! (and it was cheaper too!!!) Happy shooting :)

The Novar lens on the Zeiss is a simple triplet. Really, they figured out sharpness really early on so its no surprise it is good. They do however show spherical, chromatic, and astigmatic aberrations which led to the development of Tessar and other lens formulas to correct for such artifacts. It's really worth getting the shutter mechanism cleaned on these cameras, as once done (assuming you look after it), it will never fail again.

For darkroom timing, I use a cheap quartz clock that ticks loudly and accurately once every second (Ansel Adams used a metronome). No knobs or dials to mess with, just your ears, and you get a lot of practice counting seconds. Sometimes I practice with the kitchen clock to test myself. Most people count too slowly, I think.

Nice video and an interesting camera Roger. So much so I went on line and bought a working ZEISS IKON Nettar for only £25. It looked good in the photos and at that price, if I have to have some work done to bring it up to scratch, no worries. I already have a range finder so I'm halfway there. Can't wait to give it the once over and run a film through it.

Happy new year Roger. Cheese bites are essential camera bag fodder👍🏼. A fine brace of cameras indeed. As you say, slower speeds of these older cameras are often unreliable, if they work at all below 1/8 sec. usually to dirt and crap clogging up the slow speed escapment. Any camera spanmerman worth their salt will be able to get them running like new again fairly reasonably. I can heartily recommend Lyndon at Londinium Cameras based in Devon.

Vintage folding cameras are a great way into medium format film photography. I'm currently enjoying using a Balda Baldax 6x4.5 and it's a great little camera. Hello Roger. Interesting you don't trust the lower shutter speeds eg 1/15th of a second on your Nettar. Well if you was to have the camera serviced and ask the technician to use graphite powder on the shutter this will cure the speed range. It can be done DIY as I have done and used a HB pencil very sparingly after very carefully cleaning the shutter mechanisms. Trust me Zeiss was and is a high precision ethos brand and would never have put such a product out on the market. In 1956 this model retailed for around £12 which was not cheap at all.. Great vlog.

Cheers Mark. It only has 25/75/200 speeds. As soon as I knock it down to 25 it is a bit twitchy. As are my other folders. I did try to clean a shutter once and wish I had not started the job!

Very interesting experiment. My Zenit 3M has as longest exposure time 1/30th of a second and then Bulb, So Very nice to see that thicker negatives not much of a problem. I am wondering if classic cubic grain (Ilford FP4 for instance) or is more forgiving as T-grain. Kodak T -max

As long as the metering and development is correct you should be fine, and of course nice light Dane. If you are too contrasty too often it could be development. Try knocking a minute or so off the time for a flatter neg. The messy thing, I am always finding that. In the Winter it looks less messy as there are not much growth

Roger maybe one day take the Nikon F6 out and shoot one shot in auto and one shot in manual mode and see how big of a difference there is or isn’t.
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss
@ShootFilmLikeaBoss 6 ай бұрын
That would be tricky as the F6 has a meter right in your eye piece. So in Manual mode I would be watching that. I could possibly tripod up, get focused and composed. Then turn the camera on and shoot without looking trough the eye piece. Then take another shot at my "sunny 16' thought. And see the difference.
