Let's talk about Bridgerton! Season 3 has been much discussed and I finally finished all the Bridgerton books. So let's talk books vs. TV show! This is a Bridgerton series review, and some unpopular opinions on the Bridgerton adaptation. What did you think of the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn and the Netflix adaptation?

I was also not onboard with Eloise's story. Marena deserved a better life. She was so strong willed in the prior books which I loved.

Love that you did this review!!! I have loved this series for years and years and was over the moon that they were turning it into a Netflix series. Agree 100% that the books didn't age well in a lot of ways and the series is blowing me away with the changes- I love how the vision is playing out. I also recommend the prequel series that goes back a generation and the offshoot books that highlight the side characters- like the Featheringtons... its been years since I read that but I know the Netflix series is way off script on those! So fun- always love your insights

Thank you!! I agree, I think the show is doing a great job with the changes. I am interested in trying the prequels eventually!

Eloise deserves so much better! That book wasn’t good, and Phillip as a love interest is just the worst. I agree with you, I hope they change her love interest in the show. Eloise is such a great character and they can do so much more with her story.

Agree with your takes completely! I read the books a long time ago and had different opinions but on the reread reordered my favorites a lot. I’m hoping for so much more for Eloise from the show.

I have now watched Season 3, and I think it is the best adaptation of the series yet. I like that they stayed true to some of the central plot elements, like Colin being jealous that Penelope is a published writer. I also like that there was not a love triangle like the trailers suggested there would be. I like that we got to see Lady Featherington and Cressida in a different context than them just being mean. Definitely gave us a depth of character from both and made me more sympathetic to them. I did not like that Francesca got tongue tied when she met Michaela Sterling, only because in the books she really truly madly loved John. And I thought that reaction took away from the relationship she had made with John during this season. But I think this actress is doing a great job as Francesca.

I prefer the show. I read all the books 14 years ago and while they all started out promising, something went wrong in each one to make me sour to it (problematic consent, the male lead being really toxic, etc.etc.). There were only a couple that I actually liked. The show isn't perfect, but I think most of the changes have been positive!

It took me a long time to watch the show, but after seeing the first season I binged all eight of the books in a week. Definitely see the issue with consent, and I agree with you that they are definitely a product on the time being written before the METOO movement. I feel like the story and characters are stronger in the beginning books, and with Francesca, Hyacinth and Gregory the books felt cliche even for romance books. Now as a film major, I recognize that changes have to be made when adapting a book to a visual medium. I think season 1 did really well, and brought in a magical whimsy for the tv series. I was very excited from season 2 and ended up lukewarm about it after finishing it. I almost DNF'd it when they took it to the wedding scene before the sister figured it out. But, to be fair, I hate that trope in stories. And it is popular to do in tv series so I find it painful to watch and not enjoyable at all. I also feel that Anthony's character arc was more about him being selfish and an arrogant ass than something of substance like a fear of loss in the book. After seeing the trailer for Season 3 and seeing another love triangle set up, I have not been in a hurry to watch it. At least in the trailer, it appears that the writers are leaning on more trite tv tropes. And I'm not in a mood to deal with that. I did watch the Queen Charlotte spin off and loved it, so I think this tv Bridgerton world that has been set up is excellent. Your video is the first Bridgerton coverage I've watched because I trust your reviews and opinions even when I don't agree with them. I'll probably watch Season 3 in the fall when I am more in a romance mood.

I hated that they made Kate the villain in the tv show , but book 2 is my my second favorite of the series but I loved Sir Phillip, although agreed when he was wicked !!! His cousin, he took over his title after his death .
