I had no idea how good how fantastic my friends' potato salad was. I'm Irish. My best friend (RIP) coached me over and over- and she was always truthful- I just kept missing it- anyway- Everytime I start it- I feel she's near me shaking her head and smiling. I'm on my way- Donna you have helped me to keep remembering. My only remark as to the onions is that the first day they are great- but the 2nd the onion starts to get too strong. So- I've started using the dehydrated and put the chopped onions on the side for those who want more.

I have seen a Popeyes chicken employee coming out of the bathroom with his apron on. He went behind the counter, took the raw chicken from the plastic bucket pan with his hands, dipped it in the flour and dropped the chicken in the flour and then the deep fryer. I also saw similar thing from the Waffle House. One of the cooks came from the bathroom with his apron still on, went behind the counter and started cooking. Hopefully he washed his hands in the bathroom.

Potato salad is one of my dishes to make for our Thanksgiving dinner, cookouts and any other gatherings that we have requiring it. I use all purpose white potatoes or red potatoes. Russets get too mushy for me. I use Hellman’s Mayo, a couple of squirts of mustard for color and no sugar. The other ingredients are about the same as yours perhaps different amounts. I do believe however that there are different strokes for different folks. So prepare yours according to what you and your family like.

And, of course, over the years I have tried different things in my potato salad. Sometimes I will add a little finely diced red pepper. It all depends on if I feel like doing a whole lot of chopping.

Quite a while ago, a friend gave me a new way to make potato salad. After cooking the potatoes, you put them in a bowl, then pour some French dressing on them. Refrigerate overnight. Then next day add vegetables you like, hard boiled eggs, and bind it all together with mayonnaise. Salt and pepper to taste. We love it, but when I bring it to a picnic or when I have it at my parties, some people won’t try it! They’re missing out on a delicious potato salad!

My great auntie had a fit back in 1991 when I put the potatoes in the fridge to cool. She came and pulled them out saying.."nooo baby...they need to get seasoning while warm to absorb the flavors." So not super hot but definitely not cold...that's the reason grocery store salad taste so bland and gummy. Also we used Lawry's and no sugar since there's already a bunch of sugar poured in that pickle relish:) Love your videos!!!

Suggestions for removing the lid of a jar (when there is no man around)…use the handle end of a stainless steel case knife (the kind you would use to spread peanut butter with) hit around the edge of the lid about 2-3 times in the direction you would turn to remove it! Has never failed me! Also, there is a floppy round thin rubbery thingamajig you lay flat on top of the jar lid. Make sure you get a secure grip and twist. Usually, top loosens and comes right off🙂

I boil the potatoes first then cool them down, if necessary put them in refrigerator. Then it’s easy to peel them. Cut up your potato’s once they have chilled down. You might try my moms recipe of one tablespoon of mustard. Add a sprinkle of sweet paprika on the top with celery seed. I’ve never heard of adding sugar to potato salad. To each his own. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

Hit the top sides of the cover to break the seal and then it will twist off.

Also use a knife & poke a little whole in the lid. Lets pressure off. I mostly do this if using the whole jar of something

This is my first time here, and I'm really enjoying watching you cook! I just want to give you a little hint on how to open sealed jars. It's easy peasy. Just put the pointed end of an old timey coke bottle opener under the rim of the lid and lift up to break the seal. You may have to do it at more than one spot so you don't chip the glass. You can usually hear when vacuum seal breaks. Then just open the lid as usual. Breaking the seal this way doesn't damage the lid. It screws back on the jar as usual. I use this method all the time and I never have a problem opening lids anymore. If you don't have one of these old style openers, use something else pointed that's small enough to slip between the lid and the rim of the jar. I hope this helps.

Hi Donna. That potato salad looks so yummy. An egg slicer works great for chopping the eggs fast. After slicing turn sideways and slice again. I'm sure you already know about it but just a suggestion 😉

I love to see how others make their potato salad. I like them all. Potato salad is good no matter what combination of ingredients is in there. I occasionally make a version with a cooked sweet dressing which is outstanding. Love your videos, and the commercial in this one was priceless!

Everything is looking good. You can use a spoon to break the seal to pop the top. Place the top of the spoon underneath the top and pop it.

I love this recipe. I also boil my potatoes but my additions include all the items you use minus the pimento. I use sweet gherkins that I chop and I also add 1/2 cup of finely chopped green pepper, and a little mustard. In the NE region so Hellman’s mayonnaise is my choice. I love your style.

@@linhappy5338 They are hard to find NE of NC where they are made at the Mount Olive plant. You can order online at Walmart or other online sources. In the meantime cutting up those baby gherkins will yield the same results. I learned all of this when I attended Mount Olive’s Pickle Festival! I haven’t even tried it yet, because I just found sweet salad cubes. I’m ready now!

I was just watching other videos and came across one of yours from a month ago, and I told my daughter she is a southern cook like me, I have been cooking for over 50 years and I have the love of everyone who eats my cooking, my family wants me to open a restaurant but I told them not at my age, you make your potato salad the same way the only difference is I add some yellow mustard for color and I use red or yellow potatoes, and thank you for the tip of the baking soda, I always added salt to the water, keep up the good work 😊,also some grated carrots taste so good if you don't like pimento 😊

Like you, I use celery in my potato salad. I also use a little bit of celery seed because the celery seed has a stronger flavor than the fresh celery. I only use a little bit, I don’t want the taste of celery to be dominant but I DO want to taste it in my potato salad. I also boil my potatoes with the skin on and cut them after they’re cooked. I also love the Duke’s mayonnaise in my potato salad, along with a little bit of Miracle Whip because the Miracle Whip adds a little bit of sweetness. Sometimes I will use a little bit of sugar or I will add a little bit of the juice from the relish for added sweetness. I sometimes dice up bread and butter pickles instead of relish.

My potato salad recipe is very similar to yours except I fine chop a piece of green and red bell pepper in addition to the celery and onion for flavor and color. Because the veggies contain water, I dump them into a paper towel and squeeze some of the excess water from them. Also I blend Dukes with a few spoons of miracle Whip and a dash of mustard. It taste like heaven. Lol
