Please SUBSCRIBE, like, and share if you enjoyed this video. Thank you! I was asked to build the enchanted rose used in a play put on by our local theater works organization. I was told petals must fall at least 4 specific points (cues) and that it had to be as magical as possible. The hardest part was doing it on the budget of $50 I was going to be given. I knew right away that wasn't going to cut it, so I made this a personal project and wound up getting it built for just under $90, this is everything excluding the radio. I did purchase two identical roses, one of which was held by the enchantress, and the other for the falling petal one so that they both looked somewhat similar. I have not decided what to do with it yet, but most of the theater folks I've been working with highly suggested to rent it out. At any rate, I had a lot of fun designing and building this, and am thinking about doing a couple more to sell. Thanks for your interest and watching!

Dear Al's Auto- Thanks for your support. Electronics all purchased and working on Rose head. Haven't drilled it yet Q: our rod magnets seem too strong and big. they are 1/8" D by 1/4 " long- what size did you use? Source? Q: They are three out put wires from the brushless ESC-Blue Black and Red. This is the source for the 12v LED dome strip, 12v LED spotlight- and in our case necked down to 4.5 volts for a fairy light string around the stem. How do the 3 wires connect to the two wire lighting system so that the receiver controls the light intensity? Sincerely Breuhaha61

I will try to find my parts list and will get back with you on the magnets. The ESC you need is the brushed one. I don't know if there is a way to make a brushless one work. I did see that some offer that in a firmware upgrade.

@@breuhaha6156 I just thought of something. If you already drilled your head for larger magnets, I read you can heat up magnets a little at a time to reduce their strength. I’ve never tried it, though.

Fantastic work! I'm currently building a similar one for our High Schools production in the spring. This is extremely close to the method I am currently building... I really like the servos pulling the magnets away (I was going to try for tiny electromagnets...) How do you reset the magnets when loading the petals? Is it just a matter of holding it upside down to get the magnets to 'fall' back to the top so you can attach them?
@AlsAutoandAppliance
@AlsAutoandAppliance 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the compliment! Glad to see you are working on your own as well! Basically, I use a paper clip to fish the magnets out while clipping the petals back on. Sometimes, the magnets that are close together, repel eachother and sort of hold themselves in place which makes re-attachment even easier. I, too, was going to use electromagnets, but the problem with them is they have to be powered on for the whole show, which would kill the batteries pretty fast and causing all of the petals to come off. The work around for that would be to have it externally powered, which would make the prop a little less portable. Good luck on your build and have a great show!

Dear Al's Auto and Appliance- Here at the Rocklin Community Theater (CA) we are making great progress thanks to your replies- we have a few more questions. On the ESC- it appears the output power from the ESC powers the 12v LEDs on transmitter channel #6- correct? Can you let us know the esc model you used? so many choices and amperages. It also appears sometimes more than one pedal falls on each circuit- so do you have more than one fishing line/magnets on some of the circuits? Lastly what was the source of the LED spotlight? your help would be greatly appreciated.

I got the spot light from superbrightleds.com and the module I bought is no longer available, but they have these that look the same but different housing color: www.superbrightleds.com/vehicle-lights/led-accent-lighting/led-light-modules/1-round-wired-led-accent-light-ip65-155-lumens-3000k-4000k-6500k For the ESC (controlled using throttle - left stick), I used this from hobbyking.com: hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-30a-brushed-esc.html but it doesn't show in stock. It's a 30A brushed ESC. 30A is overkill, but it was cheap and I'd be able to use it in other RC projects down the road. They have a 20A but are out of those too. You should be ok with pretty much any brand of ESC. As for dual petals, yes, two strings to one servo (or however many additional petals you wish to drop at the same instance). Those are the trickiest to get adjust properly. Glad to hear things are coming along well, and am always happy to answer any more questions you might have. Break a leg! :)

@AlsAutoandAppliance Thanks! I was surprised how well that held. I ended up 3D printing the base, and didn't have time to set up any remote control so we used a more analog method of having a crew member below the set pull on the strings and control the lighting :) Your design was a great inspiration! The lighting and dimmer is a really nice touch. The 1/16" x 1/4" magnets were the right call - anything bigger and they were too strong.

@@benhouseward3111 that is totally awesome! The real star of the show remained hidden away under the prop, lol. If I had run out of time, that's exactly how I was going to do it. Funny story, we did a showing of "Into the Woods" at an outdoor theater and didn't account for the wind and I had to hold up our tower set piece the entire show. Was a pretty cool vantage point, though. I was able to peek through a small hole that was obscured by vines. :)

Hi. Thanks for letting me know about the dimming. I was able to build the rose and it was used in the play. I had to change the led light location but was still able to dim on the last petal drop. It worked very well. I had to use piano wire instead of line. The challenge was educating the set crew on using it. They kept turning on the receiver/transmitter in the wrong order and damaged the rose with the chatter. I had to fix the rose twice and then I ended up controlling the rose for all the plays. I noticed comments between you and another person about using a different controlling system. What was that system called? is it worth investigating to ensure the controls are easier to use? I don't want to lend the rose again until I can ensure they fully understand how to use it or make it easier for them to use. @@AlsAutoandAppliance

@@gxwhitty So glad it worked out for you. I had the exact same issues with techs improperly using the rose and/or leaving the rose powered on and killing the batteries. I, too, found myself operating it instead of the techs. Another show dropped the rose and damaged the stem and it hasn't worked well since then and I have not had a chance to repair or redesign it. I was going to use piano wire as well, but for reasons I can't remember, went with fishing line. As for alternate remote operation, some have used raspberry pi modules to control the rose with a simple pushbutton remote (think it was bluetooth) and another used DMX, which is a communication protocol used for controlling devices for stage equipment like lighting, effects, sounds, etc., which is actually a great idea since it could be integrated with the sound techs equipment and with the sound tech cuing the drops or pre-programmed to drop at specific points in a sound track. On version 2, it will definitely be using piano wire. I'm also working on designing a tiny electromagnet that sits in the head to hold and drop the petals, but that would require a long lasting power source since it has to be energized to keep the petals from falling. At any rate, so glad your project worked out and it was great trading ideas with you. 🙂

great job! we are building one based on your concepts. If you could answer 3 short questions that would be great. The question is with the rod magnets. How did you attack the fishing line to the magnets- did you use magnets with a center hole? 2nd is their a spring below each magnet to return it to flush position? 3rd what was the metal tab you glued to the petals to hold to the magnets? Than you in advance. We are trying to complete by 11/1/2023
@AlsAutoandAppliance
@AlsAutoandAppliance 10 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! To attach the fishing line to the magnets, I roughened up the end of the rod with sandpaper and used a drop of CA (super glue) on that end then dipped the fishing line into the drop. Epoxy would probably work well too. I did not use any springs. I used a paper clip to lift the rods up then placed the petals on then removing the paper clip. A small allen wrench works well for this also. As for the washers, they came with the clevis links. They are actually locking clips to attach the links to the servo horns. Worked out perfect! Any small chunk of metal should work, though. I tried magnets, but the petals would stick to thinks on the way down or stick to other petals. It also required more force to release and the stretchyness of the fishing line didn't help either. Hope this helps you along on your build and good luck with the show!

Alyssa, I found the one I used on ebay. Glass ones are plentiful on there, but the plastic ones are hard to come by.

Hello! It is currently on loan through spring of next year. I don't have another to loan out at this time but am working on a new design which is larger and more robust. Thank you so much for your interest, and I apologize for not being able to help at the moment. :(

Hi there. Where abouts are you located? I would love to rent your rose, but I am in BC Canada. If you can't ship it are you able to provide plans for me so we could try and duplicate it??? Let me know. Thanks so much.

+Lori Vandebeek Lori, I am in Missouri USA. The rose is currently unavailable to rent, and I built this out of my head, so there are no plans. I do have a parts list I made to keep track of costs. It did require machining for all of the magnets in the head of the rose as well, so definitely not a project for the average do-it-yourselfer. I wish I could be of more help!

I am building a mechanical rose, and after several several online videos, I decided to use your design as my model. I believe that I understand the concept and I own all of the major components like the controller, receiver and light controller. I agree with you that the design and build of the acrylic piece that holds the rod magnets is the toughest challenge. Did you create the piece using a 3D printer? If so, could you share the design? Any help in this area would be appreciated, and if significant, I would recognize you in the show program.

So sorry about the late reply. The head is all made by hand. I am working on a 3D printed design, but I have not been moving very quickly on it, unfortunately. I'll see if I still have some drawings from when I made the acrylic one. It certainly doesn't need to be acrylic...it just happens to be what I had on hand at the time. Otherwise, I'd love to see your built when you get it done. :)

I have completed my design. It will be interesting to compare our designs. One question if you have time. What did you use that was attached to the petals to connect to the rod magnet? I am thinking a small fender washer, but can't find one small enough.

@@thomasfujawa9864 I used the tiny little spring steel locking washers from the dubro ez connectors www.hobbytown.com/dubro-e-z-connectors-2-dub121/p-xuynhedqqqsbg4yz I tired using tiny disc magnets, but they were too strong and would sometimes not detach from the head.

I'm using small ring magnets. I push the wire thru the middle of the magnet and then bend it on the N part of the magnet so it can't slip thru the hole. Then I solder the rod to the S part of the magnet. The soldering of the magnet holds it in place and also reduces its strength, which reduces the probability of not detaching. Thanks for the help.

+Kim Nisbett Kim, thank you for your interest in my enchanted rose! :) It's a somewhat tedious process re-setting the prop and will definitely require detailed instructions. I will say that I am working on a video showing how to set up this prop. With that being said, I was hoping to improve the robust-ness of the mechanical parts of the prop before offering it up for rent, as my biggest fear is for the prop to malfunction during the show, especially with myself not being there to quickly make any repairs. The weak-link is the connection of the magnets to the line that runs down to the servos in the base. I had one magnet separate from the line (fortunately, not during a run) that I was able to quickly repair. I sure would hate for that special moment, during a scene, get ruined due to the rose not performing its task.
