These gates are going to clog again and again. Engineers should make bigger gates to avoid this problem. Strange that it's still happening and peoples are wasting money. It will not work I am sure.
Enjoy the video;)

That trash rack is supposed to catch any sticks, so they don't end up in the flood gate. If a large stick got stuck partway through the flood gate, it won't be able to close. Also those doors are super heavy, so it's much harder to clear clogs inside. That's why there is a trash rack. To make the clogs happen where it is easy to remove.

Agree - you don't want the flood gates jamming open as you then risk sea water from entering at times of storm / high tides. Salt water in the freshwater canals would be very bad for the wildlife. They are designed to let water out but not back in again.

That has to be an ongoing job. The racks probably should be cleaned every week. To keep them clear.

The critical part of this structure are the swing gates that stop the ocean storm water from flooding the channel. The trash rack serves two purposes: It keeps sticks and other flotsam out of the swing gate. And it also provides a place for the beavers to build a dam that isn’t at the swing gate. Normally you see trash racks in front of culverts to prevent beavers from building a dam inside of the culvert, and here there’s nothing stopping the beavers from walking around the trash rack sluice gate wall and building a dam at the swing gate. Anyway, all trash racks like this require maintenance, and this one didn’t look very neglected when you started. If the trash rack were completely packed with water spilling over the top, that would be a sign of neglect, but this one looks to be maintained by somebody. Cleaning trash racks is always helpful though.

Please don’t leave that trash rack pulled up. It prevents anything getting to the floodgate, which is the most important piece of that installation.

This 👍 The trash rack needs to be returned back to its original position to stop a potential blockage in the floodgates. Agree with the other comments that the trash rack needs more maintenance but opening it will potentially cause more serious problems.

The needle rack is there for a purpose. 13Ngash13 is right on why it is there. It just is not a good design to only have one small section though. It should have been all the way across the ditch. We had to check ours hourly when operating and more often if we had heavy weeds coming down the canal. Our potato rake was 20' in length for doing that and we had a trash machine for heavier objects. If it got really bad, then we would call in the crane to clam shell the trash out. And a front end loader to haul it off the deck. I hope you pulled your stick out before you left. Otherwise it will jam up even worse with the gap at the bottom.

Great video, thanks! As has been previously mentioned, the grate prevents trash coming into contact with the tidal flaps. Sometines the tidal flaps cannot close if rubbish is in the way and this makes the tidal flaps ineffective. The problem with this design is that the grating is far too small. I would estimate for this to work effectively, the trash grating should be in the order of 5 times the current width. Even at this size it will require trash removal from time to time.

Good work to clean the rack. However, you now must clear the swing plate from the small sticks and grass chunks which accumulate there. Otherwise, it will no longer be able to close tight when needed.

Thank you for the dam removal. I kinda think that gate needs to be down to prevent the beaver access to the gate area. There was already grass getting into the opening of the gate. I do think that gate could be made differently. I've seen tryangular trash racks that work well. They still need regular cleaning but that's just preventing the beaver access to harder to clean areas. Keep up the good work. 😊❤

That system is in place to keep salt water out of the wetlands and to keep a certain amount of water in and that gate is to keep logs out of the drainage doors. That area just after the gate is a settling pond . Hope you put the gate down when you leave. Not a good way to get content if you are stuffing with things that you don't understand! Just go the whoever maintains it to find out how it works

Do you request permission sometimes when working on a public system like that? Government employees can be a bit protective of their work areas sometimes and could get mad at you for doing "their" job. I agree that the trash gate prevents blockages of the flood backflow and tidal gate. Very nice system if properly maintained. Hug Elfa

Hi Kenis. As always, another interesting video. Ačiū! UnfortunatelyI don't agree with you that this is a bad system. The rack holds large branches back so that they do not block or damage the flood valve. Of course, the grid must be cleaned regularly by local authorities. The pond is probably intended to allow sand and mud to settle to the bottom, also to keep the valves clean. I found the location on Google Maps and saw that there was a more primitive system first. In my opinion, the new one is better. By the way, if you live nearby, you live in a beautiful location. I've never been to Lithuania, but the coast looks beautiful!

gate slats are too wide or not enough. You’re supposed to be able to lift clean re install. In case of emergency release the water pressure will be too great to lift. They need to install either boat trailer wrachet winch stainless steel. cables or set it up to self clean then conveyor belt the the debris out to the sides for easy pick up.

I think this scheme works like a filter. It keeps out what shouldn't go through. There's a lot of rubbish in your videos and this will create new traffic jams later on. That's precisely what this scheme prevents. I hope you got the gate down.

In this video I didn't understand why you felt like you had to dismantle the beaver dam. In your other videos I understand because they are flooding your fields. But here it's a wetland with no apparent commercial use. Flooded wetlands are important for the ecosystem. Did you speak with an environmental conservationist first?
