New trapper here hope someone will answer this question on a very old video. Is that a busted open dam and you just put a trap near it? Does that work and is that spacing ok?

#1 coilsprings are too small. Technically you could catch beavers by a front foot in a #1, there are plenty of people who have caught a beaver in raccoon or mink sets using #1 or #1 1/2, but beavers a powerful animals and have large hind feet. My preference is #5 bridgers because they are large enough for a back foot catch and have plenty of holding power. You could probably get by with a #2 size coilspring if you are just targeting front foot catches. I'd recommend drowning your catch, regardless of what size trap you use.

How long is your chain between the trap and the drowning lock?

Heck yeah they will brake bone. I got a broken thumb to prove it. For any people out there new to trapping at some point you will get bit. Like the man said keep your fingers out of the way and don't be in a hurry to reset.

I've been fortunate enough to not have broken any fingers. Those big beaver traps have a lot of power. I do have a black thumbnail and sore thumb from getting my thumb caught in an MB 550 just the other day. You're right it's going to happen eventually

Yeah them 550's will make you wonder why you did that in a hurry.

Not for nothin but a wild animal that runs around the woods barefoot its whole life is alot tougher than a persons finger. But yea getting bit sucks. Never broke anything though. You learn quick after it happens once though... "fire. hot."

Do you only use coil springs or do you use long springs?
@coyotetrappingschool1575
@coyotetrappingschool1575 9 жыл бұрын
I only use coilsprings, they are smaller and easier to transport, and in my opinion easier to set as well. Its just my preference but I'm a coilspring fan.

It catches beavers, they don't get spooky with footholds, as long as its underwater. They step things that shift and move all the time

+Oliver S. As a trapper, you're going to get caught sooner or later, you've got to come to terms with that. I am extra careful with those larger traps, that's why I always adjust the pan from under the loose jaw, if it fires you won't get caught. If you were to get caught you could use your feet to depress the springs and get loose or at worst pull the trap and carry it back to get help. So there's no real danger of being stuck in a remote area.
