Check out my blog post about Barry Harris Half-Step Practice Model for Bebop Scales :
www.jazzguitarlessons.net/bar...
Some bebop scales approaches have been described at length in the teachings of David Baker and Barry Harris (to name only a few.) However, I personally find some of the bebop "scales rules" for adding half-steps are a little too complicated and too contrived to be applied easily.
See the Barry Harris workshop here:
www.jazzguitarlessons.net/bar...
In this video, I'll show you two PHRASES for practicing the bebop dominant (Mixolydian) scales, descending, starting from ANY scale tone. Read the scale exercises in the order in which they're presented and you're getting the distilled approached from both Baker and Harris.
Try this guitar lesson on bebop fingerings for common scales:
• 4 Effective Bebop Scal...
I recommend jazz guitarists of all levels to practice the exercises found in this video.
It's a great warm-up to feel the POWER of bebop phrasing.

Interesting Marc. I would just point a few things out. First, Barry is still alive and well teaching and giving concerts all over the world. Second, he doesn't believe in a 'bebop scale'. He believes in a C7 scale with some half step rules. 1 3 5 and 7 use the same rules and 2 4 6 use different rules. He also has a chromatic scale which uses a totally different set of rules. Definitely worth checking out . Falls nicely on the guitar. Third, I enjoy the production of your videos. Really well done. Keep up the good work brother!

what really keeps me away from learning this and investing time and when i got this question answered it would help me lots: why is this so important? i would really never just go up or down the scales and when i just do one note differently the whole rules are obsolete. can someone bring some light into this?

Wonderful lesson, thanks a lot, Marc. Jerry Bergonzi has a similar very intetesting chapter in one of his books, called "10-note-scales" or s.th. like that (7-note-modes & 3 chromatics)

I checked the Harris and Baker methods. The one that I really liked was the Bergonzi book Vol 3. He suggests 5 and 7 notes bop scales, and also to start on beat 4 (anticipating) and starting on beat 2 (delaying). Playing bop scale fragments are better in my opinion, since the change duration in bop are often 2 and 4 beats.

I recognize some of these exact chromatic notes from some of the scale studies in Berkeley books. At the time I learned them I was wondering why and when to use them. Now I see that it is just a way of landing on the beat with chord tones and targeting particular notes at the beginning of the bar.

Im still at intermediate level playing jazz guitar. For the past few months i've memorised all these different Barry Harris halfstep rules, starting on every of the 7 mixolydian notes, can play them in any key and all 7 positions. But the question i came to ask here is... where the hell do i apply these? Somewhere where i see at least 2 bars of same dominant chord? Over blues and a ii-V ? So mutch work memorizing all this just to squeeze 1 rule over the chord... I like playing this over the static dominant chord endlessly, but this will never happen in real life 🤔

Well ... that's a tough question. First off: congrats on the diligence 👍🏻 Putting in the work DOES pay off. Secondly, my 2 cents: personally, when I drill thinks like this (scales, arps, etc.) I just completely abandon any expectations of results. I work work work. Drill drill drill. And then when I get to improvise, just completely let myself go and PLAY. That language shows up in my playing only once it's been fully integrated.

Hi, Is this scale only for dominante chords? Or is it used on other chords? Thanks
@jazzguitar
@jazzguitar 4 жыл бұрын
Hey! There are different bebop scales for different chords. The "bebop scale" concept is basically adding chromatic notes to a scale so that the chord tones line up on the strong beats. So you can adjust a dorian, aeolian, basically any scale so that it becomes a bebop scale, and you can use that scale in the same way you would use the "parent" scale (aka dorian, aeolian etc.)
