Finally! Someone has touched on this subject, I always wanted to be a photographer growing up, so I went to college completed my course and went straight into national newspapers working as a press photographer, for years I would take photos for work but I'd completely stopped taking photos outside of work, personal projects were something I felt I didn't wanna do anymore, but as the years rolled on my stress levels went up and up and I hated having to pick up my camera, one day the stress got way to much and I had a mental breakdown, it stripped me of all of my confidence and I had to leave that job. That was about 12 yrs ago and I hadn't touched a camera in all that time until recently, I live in Scotland and I love heading off into the mountains, amazed by some of the views I seen I've started taking a camera along, and for the first time in years I've rediscovered my love for photography. Only this time it's on my terms, I'm now classed as an amateur and I'm totally fine with that, the first person to offer me a job doing photography will be getting told to fuck off 💪😂😂

I loved this so much! Comforting to know that I’m not the only one who went through a stage of picking up my camera and feeling like it’s work. I go in and out of that sometimes! Usually I find it’s that I put too much pressure on myself even when I’m not working. LOVE YOU BOTH AS ALWAYS

I love how deep you guys went into that question I asked recently! I'm now at a point myself where I'm turning my hobby into my career, and yeah that comes with days where you absolutely don't enjoy shooting. I've come to realise that it's more so about living in contentment and being grateful for getting that opportunity, rather than expecting every day to be the best day ever purely because you've monetised your passion.

Your back and forth editing/ pacing is so good. Made a game of UNO really entertaining. Also totally agree w/ you. Turning hobbies into professions is more complicated than it seems. Also your point about how doing work for others is entirely different than doing it for yourself is soo true

This is a great and nuanced take on the subject - becoming a professional designer has definitely changed my relationship with design and I definitely have that feeling that I don't have any interest in booting up inDesign when I get out of work, but I love doing design 40 hours a week and balance is important in life. Getting into photography in the last year or so has been a great opportunity to pursue a creative outlet completely separate from 'work', which is great.

I totally agree with this! It is also different working for yourself vs. for someone else. I am also a creative human and design school KILLED my desire to do interior design. I then moved on to graphic design and web design. I found I hate having customers to do design work for. It sucks the fun out of it. But if I am doing it for myself it is way more enjoyable. So now I am giving KZfaq a try especially since it is something I have always wanted to do.

The issue people don't realize is that when you turn your hobby into a job, you don't have a hobby anymore. You have an amazing job that you love, but you've lost that means of relaxation and fun. Making sure that you find something else to do as a fun hobby -- and allowing yourself enough time off from your hobby/job -- is so important!

I’m lucky enough to say I get to do what I love daily. Work isn’t “work” although sometimes it is. Passion needs an element of scarcity I think to stay kinetic. Always be chasing something. It all about the journey for sure and the conflict that comes with it are teachable moments. It’s not easy, it’s hard, for some it’s easier than others but looking at some of the best films made and the restrictions they faced making it vs the endless financing and resources of others is pretty telling. Loving what you do is a gift for sure. I’m thankful for it everyday and happy to offer support who need help finding theirs. Why I have an lot of interns come through, like mine when I was starting out, hungry minds need feeding.

Dude this video is awesome. I have learned that one way of keeping a hobby pure and fun and inspiring is by not doing it for money. Ideally yeah its cool to make money off of passion, but its not the end of the means. Ive had to make catagories in my life like " This is how I make money. Maybe not enjoy, but it pays da bills and allows me to play Label: Career. This is how I have fun and relax and be creative: Hobby. This is how I help other people: Ministry." In a perfect world, if be able to do hobbies and ministry for money plus full time but im cool with doing it for free!

Totally relate and agree! Dont let your hobby become your job! I studied film and photography, absolutely obsessed with it all until i started working as a photographer! That quickly killed my passion and i ended up selling all my gear! Got into food, opened a few restaurants and coffee bars back in South Africa, and then, when we decided to move to Scotland i needed to find something to keep myself busy with as i’m actually not allowed to work until my visa is sorted! Thats when i took both my passions and turned them into one 🤓 I now make videos of food and i absolutely love it!! Because its for me, my creative outlet! Not doing it for money or because its my job, just because i love it! And thats absolutely key 👌🏻 Thanks cool video guys! 👍🏻

Love this episode and always wonder about the same question. I came to the design profession with the passion and love for drawing. Drawing calms my mind and was a great outlet. But I realized the same problem that I 'draw' at work all the time that drawing becomes NOT my go-to hobby anymore when I have time to myself.

Great message! I got so burned out with photography and didn't enjoy shooting anymore because I was making money shooting weddings and things I didn't like shooting. I had to put the camera down for a few years professionally and then come back to it with new passions. I recommend having personal projects every month so that you get that creative outlet 😁

People scare about the end result if the things did not work out. So they refrain to choose what they love. But why not to convert your passion into profession if you really love to do that. I started my journey of Photography while pursuing my graduation and after graduation I took my hobby into profession. Don't scare , don't follow herd just follow your heart and go for it. This is such a great video and so timely at least for me. I have been longing to have photography as my career, I’ve acquired a lot of gear with time and now that I have clients and photography has become my job, I feel like I don’t have that creative outlet I do not pick up my camera during events or for personal reasons and I thought to myself “wow I’m so ungrateful” but it looks like a lot of people go through the same thing. Taking on a project to bring back that passion sounds like a great idea I think I’m gonna go ahead and do that. It’s a nice day outside I think I’m gonna grab my camera and go out and shoot something for someone LOL

Chris, your side of the topic is where I currently stand. I chose development as a way to fund my passion. At the time, it was music. Now, I'm at a crossroad where I have a passion for filmmaking but not sure if I want to allow dev to fund that passion or transition into filmmaking as a career. Ultimately, I want to do what I want to do in filmmaking rather than dealing with a client and doing what they want. But I also don't mind trying my hand at different forms of filmmaking. Anyway...great stuff guys.

For me the hardest and the best thing I did for myself was learning to say "No, thank you" to some paying jobs. By doing so, I had more time to take on more creative projects or creating one for myself. However, the turning point for me was when I started collaborating with others and taking on different roles (lighting, audio, and being a second shooter).

A hobby carries no stress because you can pick it up and put it down whenever you want. The minute you do it as a "job" you need to constantly please your employer (even if your employer is your customer) so you HAVE TO keep going. to much of anything makes it boring and a drag. Chris! Don't keep reminding of failure! you'll ruin the date!

I know this comment is two years late...but I love everything they had to say on this video. The vast majority of people subscribe to the “do what you love” thesis. But it’s like people are afraid to publicly acknowledge that doing what you love for $ can possibly actually ruin that thing. Deciding to do ANYTHING for $ will change how you see and interact with that thing....

theRadAhmed good question! Few options, if you have a phone that takes photos use that until you can save up. When I started in high school I borrowed my dad’s film camera until I had enough money to buy the cheapest DSLR kit (it was used). I made a list of gear I needed with the price, and then saved every penny from the few hours I worked at a job. Almost all my gear was second hand.
