An interesting documentary on the way of the geisha:
A young woman from Northern Japan has decided to quit school and move to Gion, the geisha quarter of Kyoto. There she wants to fulfill her dream of becoming a Geisha, called Geiko in Kyoto.
First she has to go through a trial period of several months and only after passing an exam is she formally accepted as an apprentice Geisha, called Maiko.

heck taking my heels off after a night out is hard enough can't imagine dealing with a whole kimono. Personally I lack the patience to do what these girls do. It seems like really hard work and requires a lot of dedication. Kudos to them!

I feel bad for the actual older sister. I have heard of siblings and how one is successful in this or this or this, while the other gets pushed into the background. Eventually, the Background Sibling would usually end up not talking anymore to the rest of their brothers or sisters or their parents because they get tired of having the Successful One constantly rubbed in their face, whether on purpose, passive-aggressively, or by accident.

this happened with my cousin,she went to community college while her sister got accepted to a good college ,then when she graduated ,got a very good job and thats all everyone talked about...my cousin ended up becoming a mute and stayed in her room all day,no one really knows whats up with her anymore and i wish i could talk to her but she lives far and doesnt give out her number.

They're still not allowed to have boyfriends. If a Geisha wishes to marry, she must retire. No working Geisha is allowed to have a love life.
@Ilovelosangeles
@Ilovelosangeles 7 жыл бұрын
Well at 5:36, they start talking about boyfriends, and the girl is saying that it's rare for them to have a boyfriend because they work so hard and don't have time, and then goes on to say that if you're passionate about that stuff, that you'll never survive in this business. She never says they're not allowed to have boyfriends, or that they're not allowed to have a love life. She says this starting at 5:36.

It's nice seeing that Yukina could develop a good relationship with her new onee-san. It's sad that the relationship with her own blood onee-san has deteriorated. But what does she expect? She quit college while her younger sister is in Kyoto under vigorous training and all she's doing is buying more mascara. Yukina will become a geisha, an artist. What will she do?

I wonder what happened to Misato, Yukina’s sister? Did she ever decide to try college again? And did she and Yukina talk again? It doesn’t sound like they’re not on speaking terms, but if Misato’s jealous and feels like she lacks ambition or direction in her own life, well…?
@OR0R0
@OR0R0 10 жыл бұрын
Misato seems like kind of mean. There's no competition between her and Yukina. Yukina has just always had a dream and is following it. I think Misa's just frustrated cos she hasn't found her dream. She kind of feel like her little sister one upped her. I'd be proud of Yukina if she was my little sis. Maybe Misato could model since she seems to like makeup and fashionable clothes.

This sorta seems to be the culture. Either that, or it’s the sibling pecking order, that is, the eldest sibling or older siblings get held up as examples of what to do or not for the younger ones. Take my eldest uncle: started his own company. It’s still around and his middle child has taken over most of the day-to-day running of it. If our family had been any different, my mom and her siblings (my grandparents had 7 children) would’ve heard some variation of ‘Why can’t you be more like brother?’ growing up.

Unless they are born in okiya, these girls commonly go to school until 15 and then join okiya. So you can still become a Geisha if you want. You don't need to have any money to start with. Your okasan will pay for everything. When you finish your training and become a Maiko, that's when you have to start paying back. But it'll take years before you can start earning money for yourself, so it requires lots of dedication and commitment.

why I can't become a Maiko: -kneeling on hard floors -not being able to wash my hair everyday -thick white makeup makes my pimples worse -no boyfriend or lover allowed -starving at luxurious banquets and events -always entertaining old men -being forced to drink alcohol -learning the difficult Kyoto Accent -almost no contact to my family😗

In the wareshinobu hairstyle the two red pieces (which are tubes of red silk slightly stuffed) are called kanoko. In the ofuku style the traingular piece (which can be blue, green, purple, white, pink, red and white, or green) is called a tegara kanoko. In the katsuyama style (the one worn in July) it's a ro kanoko which is only either red and white (sometimes silver) or pink. For yakko shimada it's a ro kanoko of all different colors. For sakko it is only a red, no white or silver, silk ribbon.

The ofuku tegara (piece of red and white cloth [yes you were right]) changes colors. However, I have seen senior maiko in their fourth years wearing the red and white, so it may simply depend on their preferences. There are blue, green, purple, white, pink, and red and white tegara cloths. It's a triangular piece with two strings on the outer corners that is tied around the base of the maegami (bun), the top corner has a small, short pin that does not touch the scapl but holds it in place.

@ewoodham I think they may even be a little more expensive than that these days! I have a furisode magazine from when I was in Japan and the most expensive one it is was $13,000! I would think a maiko hikizuri would be even more than that, and just on average! But maybe not. And yeah, obi have so many special threads they are ridiculous in pricing almost!

Oh, I see what you mean. But it's mostly shikomi that are (sometimes, probably depending on the okiya) forbidden to use cellphones, not maiko I think, and certainly not geiko. A cellphone would be handy to communicate with the okiya or ochaya in case of changes or trouble, and in any case I remember seeing other pictures of geiko and maiko using cellphones (and a documentary where a shikomi said she wasn't allowed to).

It's actually a band of cloth that's tied in w/ the hair style, not a ball. I can see how it can look red and green, though I believe from what I've researched, it's actually a red and white pattern. Don't quote me on that, though. Maiko have different colored ones depending on what stage of training they're at. From the looks of it Kikuno is still a junior maiko, probably around 17. She is now a geiko, as is Kikuyo. The band and hairstyle change around 18 to one with a red band.

That's good manners in Japan. Especially as a maiko in training, she would be scolded if she didn't. From a practical point of view, the door is less likely to slide off this way, as the direction of the force you apply to it doesn't tend to lift it off.
