it's so nice to hear from people who actually know what they're talking about and are actually doing it for real, it's not that common on youtube, shout out to you Streaky!

What a video. Excellent advice that you can apply not only to mastering, but also production in general. A lot of it even applies to many other jobs, too. Better to be a master of few tools, than just 'good' with many. Networking bit is spot on as well.

I learn't this lesson several years back, got my room properly treated "Not Foam" gots some flat monitors with matching sub and an orpheus, best decisions i've made offcourse it took my ears a long time to get use to the new reallity that perception is not reallity and if you want the truth you need to invest in the right area's and hope your ears are up for it. Thanks for confirming! Now if you could just have a word or two with my ears!

Wait so, there's this mastering engineer who hit me up, he did 99% of everything you said: provided feedback, shown that he's interested, gained my trust and offered free mastering. I can't believe how accurate this is abd as an artist I can definitely say that this guy knows what he's talking about. My issue is that I'm not sure if I should be happy I'm getting free mastering or mad that he's likely new and it's likely not gonna be as high quality but oh well overall I guess I should be glad a guy liked my tracks that much. Thanks for this video though it clarified a lot!

If you were starting out in a home studio mastering or mixing, would you suggest using say, entry-level Yamaha monitors, or JBLs, or would you steer people towards Tannoy, Adam, or a bit higher-end monitors? Or say, just go buy a pair of Bower & Wilkins speakers, and run those through some really good amps? I've read that one guy at Sterling Sound uses B&W Nautilus' all day long, but he's running those through $25,000 Classe power amps, of course. As far as home hobbyists or beginners?

What's your thoughts on the Kush plugs,after many years of searching I'm really liking the Hammer and the Electra, I do agree with the fabfilter stuff,also what's your thoughts on the likes of Ozone 7 the so called all in one solutions,keep the vids coming respect 👍

Alpha Records I've never really been a fan of all in one solutions as I like having different flavours not just one. Not listened to the Kush plugins but I will, I'm not a plugin fan as I can never achieve the depth (3D), feel I get with my kit.

I'd have to add, that to be really "Mastering", you'd also need a basic toolset to convert file types, check levels and do basic audio "cleanup" (like RX or something). I think a lot of newbies these days forget that a big part of the job is being able to accurately listen to the track, find any issues/errors and then be able to fix them. I TOTALLY love your point on this video by the way! EQ and limiter first for sure. Such good info, as always...

Again you are the man you are a great inspiration love your videos !!! Questions and hoepfully this is not too long but what software should i use for mastering? Would it be acceptable to master in Reason and build a chain pretty much how you would in outboard gear ? And finally what do you think about Lynx Hilo converters or a Antelope studio converter and do you need 2 converters for ad/da conversions and 2 computers for going out of and coming in thanks and hopefully i didnt ask to many questions at once.

Official AbedNego thanks for the kind words 🙏 I've not listened to either convertor but if the antelope is anything like their atomic clock I'm sure it will be excellent. You need 2xda and 1 ad you need the input playback to sound the same as the recorded playback. If you are doing a rough homemade master then do as I say in this video and pick an eq and limiter plugin and use those after you've mixed it. But really if you're not planning on doing mastering 100% of the time then concentrate on what you do well and build a relationship with a mastering engineer (even a free one, as explained plenty of eager young ones out there) and they will get you the result without you needing to learn something else (not very well).

Streaky thanks again for all your help, i plan on mastering more and more and have been mastering for free as you explained in the video to learn as i go, and of course learn as much as i can from pros like yourself. Thank you so much for all the info.

Great video! I'm actually interested in getting some of my stuff mastered at Metropolis once I have the mixes ready and some cash saved, so your videos are really interesting. Just out of curiosity, how long does it usually take to master a track if you're sent a decent mix? Also, what's your thoughts on producers/artists mastering their own mixes, and these online mastering things like Landr?
@Streaky_com
@Streaky_com 7 жыл бұрын
LIVLIGA thanks for watching, I did a video on landr check it out...it takes about 45mins to an hour depending on the mix. I think people should use an external mastering engineer not just because I am one but it's good to have other ears checking things...not changing but checking, you can change the oil in your car yourself easy, but I feel safer with the mechanic checking it over...

Oh nice, I'll check that out! Nice analogy about the car mechanic. I've been in a bit of a hot debate with some of my other muso friends about Landr over the last few... well, for ages. So be good to see your professional opinion on it. Thanks for the reply btw! :)

LIVLIGA out of interest have you ever mastered anything with a good mastering engineer?
@livligamusic
@livligamusic 7 жыл бұрын
I had a remix I made a few years ago mastered, but I have no idea who the engineer was or even what studio mastered it, the label handling the project never said, but I was pretty impressed with the results. I've always been of the opinion that getting tracks mastered professionally is essential though. Quite excited to send some stuff to Metropolis. I checked out the unmastered vs mastered tracks on their soundcloud and the difference between the two is quite amazing!
