I finally found this ultimate rare documentary made by Discovery Channel, back in 2003. Aired in 2005. It's about preparations and training for the movie. It shows how much everyone had to put in their efforts and how much Stone gave himself into this project, which I believe is his work of a lifetime. Brilliant documentary, as I said, EXTREMELY hard to find.

As I watch the movie and the history, i am guessing he was probably insane. His personality and enthusiasm was infectious and he made people think they could do more than they ever imagined. The battle strategy was crazy, insane. His generals could not conceive it but he saw it and the only way anyone could have thought that would work was if they were nuts. But it worked and he did it. That's why he was Alexander the Great. We haven't seen someone like him in 2500 years.

battle strategy that was developed by his father?
@jarlnils435
@jarlnils435 2 жыл бұрын
@@trancecod his father developed the Syntagma but Alexander made it better and he used his own taktics. Philipps Syntagma was 100 men strong but alexander made it 256 men strong. Philipp had not as much troops nor the variety of troops. Alexander had greek hoblites in the back, hypaspistai who are you could say light and fast hoblites at the flanks, thracian and agrianian peltasts and swordmen from thracian tribes like the dii used as fast units to close gabs in the pike line. Slingers from rhodes, archers from crete, mounted spearthrowers from all over the balkan, lancers from thessaly who were even more than his famous companion cavalry. His army was made of troops from all of hellas. Philipp at his time had not that. He simply had the pikes, companions and light peltasts from macedon. With that he was able to crush the greek hoblite armies. But the planning and preperation for his conquest of Asia was for nothing because of the rebellion after his death Alexander had to plan every thing new

I watched Alexander a while ago and thought it was pretty alright and enjoyable movie, but recently I've been watch Kings and Generals videos of Alexander and now with this video, I feel Oliver Stone and Colin Farrell were robbed at the box office. I didnt realise just how much hard work dedication and effort to get it right they put in. So much more than other "historical" movies with fake CGI armies of generic guys. Such a shame it wasnt rewarded and we dont get more movies like this.

I'm also a history buff and if you think Adam Sandler is superior to this, you don't understand history OR acting. The film was very flawed due entirely to poor decisions on the part of its director Oliver Stone. His cast, on the other hand, were superb as far as they could be.

@@trez735 why are american accents and british accents okay in movies, but irish accents ridiculous? I for one think it highlights the "outlandishness" of Macedonians being Greeks yet still "from the north" and therefore slightly harder to understand. I'd expect the stereotypical Athenian to have a posh British and the stereotypical Spartan like Gerard Butler to have that brutish American accent.

Yeah, I don't think that it would be fair to ask for all of his conquest. That would be to much. I was sad that they cut out the Opis mutiny but again, it would be way to much. I also don't understand the people who say that there was not enough character development. They showed Alexander like he was discribed. He is a historical figur not a fictional character. The chanting at 34:48 is reference to the 'Alalalalalai' Macedonian alalagmœ (war cry)., you can sort of here it sporadicaly in the film during Gaugemela over the top of 'EN-Y-A-LIOS' which is the more prominent chanting. The name Enyalios, however, was usually used as a title for the god Ares.
@jarlnils435
@jarlnils435 2 жыл бұрын
Enyalios is a part of Ares but at the same time he is his son, the god of combat. Alalalalala or better Alala Alala is funny because it's not only the warcry but Alala is also the name of the goddess of the warcry.

Watching this documentary makes me sad for everyone involved, especially Colin Farrell and Oliver Stone. All this hard work should've paid off. I believe what ultimately doomed this movie was the direction. Oliver Stone is a master, but his vision for Alexander was a misguided one. To show how great Alexander was, Stone should've let that greatness reflected in the men around him, should've shown more of the admiration Alexander's men had for him. Instead, so much of this movie is about how disenchanted his generals were, how much his soldiers wanted to go home, mutiny, disagreement, and Alexander's love life. I get that they were trying to humanize Alexander, but the decision to portray him as emotional and uncertain undermined the grandeur of the man. Men like Alexander, Caesar, Napoleon, etc. were larger than life. Perhaps a montage of battles and victories would've served the film better than the sex scene with Roxana, Begoas' dance, the Oedipus complex scenes with Olympia, and the like. A huge missed opportunity is the Opis mutiny. Alexander's speech there is one of the greatest speeches in history, a perfect display of his charisma, and yet in the movie, it's just another scene to show how disillusioned his men became. And also, the decision to edit the movie like a Greek tragedy play with the flashback and voiceover and disjointed timeline is a respectable one, but it obviously doesn't translate well onto the big screen.

That's what I was wondering actually. I doubt Jared Leto would have opted out of making a little interview like the rest of the cast, and I know he wouldn't have even thought about not participating in the boot camp. (He wouldn't have been able to keep the part otherwise I'm sure of it. They were dead set on authenticity.) Well "gay" wasn't an issue back then. In the past, and well into the 1500's, even in deeply Christian societies, powerful men having a side-boy was seen as completely normal. Even in Renaissance Italy, a super-Christian society, there was a whole hat system in which you could take a younger man's hat on the street to signal interest and the next thing you know you'd be off banging somewhere before returning to your wife. In other words, I bet someone as powerful as Alexander didn't really care where his penis entered, so "proven" or not, it was too common for it not to occur. It wasn't until hundreds of years later when the Catholic Church doubled down on homophobia that it became the taboo it is today... and we've all seen how all that worked out for the Catholic Church...

I'm not greek so I don't have patriotic intentions in writing that. I'm german. And I'm well educated in history and history shows us that macedon was always the northern neighbor of thessaly. They were not all greeks due to being at the edge of the greek lands but their culture and gods as well as their language was greek.
